0:42 This entire segment is so simplistic but incredibly amazing. The syncopation is perfect and it takes a good amount of power to make taps pop that loud. Bailey made it look easy. All the greats make it look easy.

Yep they been doing that shit since the 1920s 30s, it's all over KZread, you just won't find any of the vintage footage by typing in moonwalking or backslide, you gotta watch those old new york stage plays from back in the day they used to get down

It was called the back slide. When Michael Jackson did it and was asked what it it was, Michael mistakenly called it the moonwalk. The moon walk was originally a different dance move that looked a little silly, moving around like an astronaut in space. That's what I believe happened. Kinda a funny story.

However, when someone claims in 1983 that they developed the moonwalk themself ......well that be a lie .... Plain and simple. I am not a fan of taking credit for someone else's stuff. He could have said....I saw this move called the backslide and decided I wanted to incorporate it into my dance routine, instead he said "I was working on this move and perfected it, couldn't wait to show the world, that day at the awards the Moonwalk was born".

@@paulaoyedele2081 nah.. yes.. nah.. i understand what you are saying. But when is something someones property? He still could’ve seen the inspiration, but if the move never was claimed by someone and MJ saw it, got inspired, made his own, perfected it and called it the moonwalk, as part of his brand. Than thats totally MJ his right to call it his own. Because he claimed it. Like the usa claimed america from the natives.

I saw MJ's do this on live tv for the Motown 25th anniversary, in his "Billy Jean" performance and all of us kids, my siblings and friends learned it as fast as we could. What I learned later and what younger people may not know is that the whole performance was a tribute to past dancers. The hat part was Fred Astaire, the Moonwalk was a tribute to Billy Bailey, and probably others in the routine, that I am unaware of. But that Motown performance really shot an already popular Jackson into a level we had not seen before, as far as album sales. But he never claimed to invent any of those dance steps and was actually honoring those who came before him.

Like Vera Ellen, but grounded. All of her children tapped and turned out straight, and family loving. They got her dimples and finesse of the danse. Dancing was taught in public schools up to some NWO Point Of No Return resulted in long marriages, Early Ease of opposite sex interaction, and long lived physical partner tether. Doing a time step on my soapbox (of Dancing Suds). Studied tap seriously and have a Hines Lick from a wayback machine. Everybody Should Tap. It's flying sans convenient bird structure.

Please forgive me for twice-told tales. The backslide had been around for a while prior to this. Bill Baily's version here is an important mile-marker in its development. Michael Jackson's true, original "moonwalk" was nothing like this at all. It was a prolonged rotational motion, in one still place, with slow-upward actions, which gave the appearance of a low-gravity environment. His execution of this backslide was breath-taking, and further developed. Somehow, the name "moonwalk" got attached to it. His first public execution of this move was at the Motown 25 event. He smoothly executed only 4 steps of the backslide and the audience erupted. Further refinements took it to a whole new level. It is significant that MJ wisely appropriated dance moves and ideas from everybody he could study. Oddly, MJ never released a record through MoTown. My only compliant is that the song "Billie Jean" is one of the trashiest stories ever recorded. So I turn the sound down whenever I wanna study MJ's backslide for my own enjoyment. I am especially grateful for this colorized version of Bill Baily's performance.
