If you look up the class in the dictionary you will see Bill Anderson's picture. Two iconic legends. I sit here with a tear running down my cheek. Not long before Mr. Roy passed away they sang this on the Opry. His vision was almost gone. When they finished the song Bill told him the crowd was on they're feet. In his dry humor Mr. Roy said they ain't leaving are they 🤣😅🤣

Jody, thanks so much for this wonderful request. What a heartfelt song. So many country stars started by singing in their local churches. Can you imagine the choir of country music in heaven?

WABASH CANNON BALL, and GREAT SPECKLED BIRD are two of Roy Acuff’s iconic songs. Roy was the power behind the Grand Ole Opry for years

Whisperin Bill loved to write very sentimental, almost saccharine songs. He also wrote sevral songs with strong humor. Bill has written more songs that you've heard but never realized Bill wrote them. What a great prolific writer singer.

Roy Acuff's home was just across the river from the new location of the Grand Ole Opry and I'm told that he took a boat across the river when he performed on the Opry. (They later built a house for him right on the grounds of Opryland but this was before then.) My home was not far from where Mr. Acuff lived and in fact when I would go grocery shopping he would often be there talking to a woman who ran one of the registers. One day I was checking out and he stepped aside and waited for her to finish ringing me out and then he told me he would help me take my groceries to my car. He pushed the cart for me and I literally was struck dumb. I was so star struck that I couldn't think of a single word to say to him. What on earth do you say to a legend? I was driving a Grand Marquis which was about the size of a small tank and the trunk was huge and when I opened it for us to load the groceries, Mr. Acuff made a comment about how large my trunk was. I had to say something and the only thing that came out of mouth was, "Thank you for helping me with my groceries. I'm pretty sure this is not something you regularly do!" When I got home I felt like banging my head in a wall for making such a stupid statement but I absolutely could not think of anything even halfway intelligent to say to him! That has been approximately 35 years ago and of course Mr. Acuff is long gone but I still cringe when I think of how stupid I was! Because I live in Nashville I have had casual contact with several country stars over the years but NONE of them struck me dumb the way Roy Acuff did!

Now this is no joke, Bill is dating my cousin who lives here in Illinois. He drives the many hours up from Nashville to se her. She does likewise in reverse. One time I saw them, as I was on the way to work setting on a porch swing talking. Yet, I have not met him formally. My work schedule has kept me from it. Our family is so glad with the amount of joy he brings to her. But Thank You for honoring him here.

@@RockN2Country Thanks for the greeting. I have really enjoyed your reactions. Loved the Mac Davis Hard to be Humble one. My cousin knows I am a big old country, Bluegrass, and Newgrass fan. I can't wait to pick his brain. Particularly I am a big John Hartford fan and I can't wait to ask him about him. And about writing Whiskey Lullaby which I think is a masterpiece of writing and execution.

Funny story about Roy Acuff : When my Late-Wife was about 19 she was at Opryland. She was sitting on a bench when an older guy approached her. "Are you having a good time young lady?" Her- "Yes, It's a real nice place." Him, "That's good. I like for my guests to have a good time here." (Puzzled look on her face) Him- "I can see you don't know me. My name is Roy. I own this place."

I've always loved this song. I remember my Dad telling me when Roy Acuff died and I remember crying thinking he was about to find out the answer to this question. When my uncle passed, my Dad sang the chorus while my Mom and I read a poem that she wrote for him. He was an old country singer too (not famous) but couldn't play anymore in his later years. Thanks Don for the great review and thanks Jody for the great request.
