i honestly think it’s kinda sad seeing this part of our culture slowly die down, i wish i was taught spanish when i was younger so i could even understand what that were saying, i was raised completely monolingual because of the culture shift

I am surprised and a little disappointed by the lack of Spanish language skills in some of these kids. Being bilingual or trilingual has so many advantages in life and in employment as well as understanding others cultures.

It's not any different than a Southern Californian codeswitching between American English and Mexican Spanish. Just that there are fewer of them (33,718 vs 23,860,000) so it's more unusual.

@@nlpnt I’m Gibraltarian and your terminology is spot on, Iv always compared Gib with SoCal, including climate wise. Similarities with San Diego as it’s bordering Tijuana to the south, except we are a lot smaller 😆, but similar layout, with trans frontier commuters coming into Gib for work.

@@adrian-4767 Gibraltarians we speak fluently Andalusian Spanish and British English both Fluently and a local dialect called Llanito or Yanito which is similar to spanglish but with Hebrew, Moroccan, Italian words thrown in.

They do go to other parts of UK. Many go to schools in London etc. This video is filmed at a school fair after all

2:09 lmao it's so funny to me how she says she can't speak it and she says 'sí' with such an English accent but then she says a totally grammatically correct sentence seemingly mostly without needing to think about it. Like whaaaaaat? Just goes to show that language really is learnt through exposure

Absolutely bewilders me that some Gibraltarians can't speak Spanish.

A similar situation happens here in Malta. Whilst most people are bilingual with English and Maltese, there is a sizeable proportion of the population which is fluent in Italian or that know this language having learnt it through television. Even though Italian has long lost its official status in Malta, it is sad that younger people are kind of ignoring it, even though Italy is quite close and the language was long part of the island's history..

I was in Gibraltar last year and local kids hanging around spoke Spanish as their primary language. I saw some young girls dressed in school uniform who didn't speak Spanish but they seemed English to me not llanitos. These must be an Anglo / anglicized minority who hang out with the British expat community. It may also be a class thing. Working class llanitos speak Spanish - higher class ones speak English.

Last time I was there older people was predominately heard speaking "llanito" if not spanish. People on their 30s and such. I'm not sure if Gibraltar's youth it's really losing it's bilingualism or they are, as you said, part of the British expat community.

I can assure you you have it all wrong, I am trying to teach Spanish to my Gibraltarian 11 year old grandson and he is just not interested because most of his friends at school are not bothered with Spanish, Your minority is what I wish for but it is not happening, You must have been in Gib for a very short time whilst I have spent most of my life here and trying to spend a lot of time trying to to teach the most rudimentary words in Spanish to my grandson. how long did you spend in Gib? a few weeks LOL .

@@SuperLuckystrike1 I have been to Gibraltar many times over the past 35 years. Maybe a couple of dozen in all. Last time I was there I had a long chat with a young British guy (blonde, both parents born in UK) in Spanish who spoke flawless Andalusian Spanish with only a hint of an English accent. I asked how he could speak Spanish so well if he was an anglo.. he just said "well it's normal, I grew up here". Guy worked at the focona as a customs agent. Can't remember his name though. Btw people who have grandchildren don't have user names like "gamerfan" nor use terms like LOL. You are clearly a kid posing as an adult.

Respecto a los jóvenes, nos los he visto tan mal, hay muchos que sus padres son extranjeros así que hablan inglés y su idioma materno más chapurrean español. Hay que tener en cuenta que el Idioma en el colegio es el inglés y me Comentaron que hace 30 años no estaba permitido hablarlo en el recreo (ni siquiera) además el inglés es un idioma muy poderoso y supongo se sentirán “cool” al hablarlo. Resumiendo, quería decir que es una cuestión de bienestar más de identidad cultural, ellos siempre hablan de la autodeterminación más que de uk o spain, básicamente tienen un sistema económico-social buenísimo y entiendo porqué no quieren que nada cambie. Leyendo estos comentarios deduzco que nadie ha pisado Gibraltar??soy española casada con inglés y nos mudamos al peñón hace dos años. Sin duda un lugar peculiar y único. Los llanitos son bilingües, hace 4 meses tuve un bebé en sant Bernard hospital y matronas y doctores hablaban los dos perfectamente, español con acento andaluz precioso y muy tierno e inglés británico. Llevó a mi hijo a unos playgroups y las mamás bilingües hablan alternativamente both languages a sus peques. Hice un tour a la roca y el guía nos dijo que aunque British, la comida, religión, clima y the way they look like is Spanish. Así que sí son bilingües. Las personas no inglesas son las que tienden a hablar sólo inglés, es decir un ruso que viene a Gibraltar a trabajar probablemente sólo habla inglés y no español porque la lengua oficial es el inglés. La realidad del campo de Gibraltar es que el paro es muy fuerte, cruzar la frontera Gibraltar-La Línea es pasar de un mundo a otro! De ahí que no quieran que lo controlen los españoles! Qué les quedarían ? Paro? Los propios lienenses se benefician de Gibraltar! Y los primeros no interesados en que lo controlen los españoles.

Creo que no eres consciente de todo el dinero y todo el empleo que pierde España en su conjunto por tener a Gibraltar ahí. El hecho de que esté pegado a una de las zonas más deprimidas de España y que unos cuantos pasen a trabajar al otro lado no compensa en absoluto en términos económicos.

La verdad que desconozco en términos numéricos el dinero que pierde España en su conjunto por tener Gibraltar; sí que he notado ciertas cosas viviendo aquí y de hecho se las comento a mi marido que es un enamorado de spain en todas sus formas, y si por algo estamos aquí es por estar cerca de mi querida Sanlúcar. Por ejemplo creo que Gibraltar debería invertir más en la línea porque se benefician de infraestructuras, hospitales, Mercancías etc aunque esto es recíproco creo que Gibraltar depende más de España,porque no tiene capacidad de producción. No sé si te referías al contrabando de tabaco que desde mi punto de vista ya no es lo que era. Laboralmente por supuesto que las dos se benefician pero creo que La línea se beneficia más porque el paro en el campo de Gibraltar tan fuerte! No se España pero sin duda muchísimas familias españolas se beneficia de que Gibraltar esté aquí. En mis comentarios sólo quería reflejar una realidad, que aquí en Gibraltar se vive muy bien, sea por lo que fuese, hay trabajo y tienen unos beneficios sociales que yo no en spain ni en uk he vivido. Algunos ejemplos son; la piscina y los deportes en general son de carácter gratuito (pregunté en la Línea y la piscina me Costaba 45€ al mes) los playgroup al que llevo a mi hijo también, los autobuses para residentes también son gratuitos, los pisos del gobierno son un chollo en alquiler (algunas familias pagan 50£) y a saber que más porque yo aquí llevo poco tiempo, los sueldos son buenísimos, la Luz y el agua son mucho mis más barato que en España.... En definitiva, reitero que no se cuánto le cuesta a España, pero la gente quiere vivir con dignidad y bien. Yo pago impuestos en España cómo no residente!!!! E igual que yo, la gente está cansada de pagar y pagar por un salario precario y no tener nada, de ahí que entienda a los llanitos, ellos no son ni una cosa ni otra, ellos son llanitos, porque lo son, después de haber vivido en uk y en Spain, es verdad ellos son ellos mismos ni una cosa ni otra y sin duda viven muy bien que es lo Importante, que en este mundo estamos de paso, y eso es lo que yo quiero para mi hijo. It's kind of hard when you have a camera on you, people get shy in any language when they have a TV camera on them. A majority of them seem to know exactly what he was saying but didn't really want to speak back. They probably speak Spanish just fine on the street like if somebody came up to them asking directions in Spanish.

I understand Portuguese but I can’t speak a word. It’s not because I’m shy but because Spanish is similar to Portuguese. Same happens for them with English and Spanish. They might not be able to put words together but they’re able to understand it by context/hearing multiple times the same thing.

in europe there is not such a thing like "latino" meaning a race. Italy , france , portugal , romania , spain , those countries can be defined as "latinos" or "latins" because their cultures and languages have direct ties with the roman empire. Apart from the fact that your appeareance doesnt define your language.

Gibraltar es tan pequeño que están rodeados por millones de personas que hablan otro idioma, además de tener un altísimo porcentaje bilingue, incluso el español que saben es muy auténtico, en el sentido que no se parece al de un británico aprende de un libro + CD. Y respecto a lo del alemán en Francia, quitando el hecho que Gibraltar tiene 30 mil habitantes y Francia 60 millones. ¿Te suena Alsacia de algo? Si, esa región de Estrasburgo

Si, ya he visto el nivel de bilingüismo que tienen, aunque no quieran emplearlo por su "flema" u "orgullo" de no hablamos español cuando lo entendemos perfectamente, de lo cual trataba mi comentario. Si, conozco esa región francesa bastante bien, al igual que Suiza y Alto Adige que mas que italianos son alemanes, así que no me vengas a dar lecciones de geografía lingüística. Lo que demuestra este vídeo es la cabezonería de los políticos por intentar demostrar un regionalismo denostado, argumentando que en Gibraltar no se habla español, al igual que esta pasando en cataluña, para seguir demandando una serie de privilegios que actualmente ya no tienen ningun sentido.

I am trying to understand them, listening to youtubers from andalucia but it is really hard. They don't pronunce s-es but also they speak really fast. For a non-native speaker it is difficult. I would get a spanish nanny if I would be living in Gibraltar :P

El Idioma Nativo de los Gibraltareños [Los Originales (Viven en San Roque)] es el Español pero los habitantes de Gibraltar [Actuales] son descendientes de Británicos, Portugueses, Italianos, Españoles [Concretamente de Andalucía], Hindúes, Árabes, Etc; todas esas personas vinieron porque los Verdaderos Gibraltareños al ser Expulsado por las Fuerzas Armadas Británicas; los Británicos tuvieron que repoblar Gibraltar con exiliados y Comerciantes [los Españoles que emigraron a Gibraltar fue por intereses económicos y por la Guerra Civil]. La primera Lengua Universal fue y es el Español, el Segundo el Portugués y el Tercero el Ingles.

De bilingüe nada!! Esto es vergonzoso.

Es un fenómeno curioso. Nada más. Pienso que piensas que yo pienso que el andaluz es un dialecto de catetos y pueblerinos sin ningún sentido lingüístico. Te equivocas. De hecho, es el dialecto del español más evolucionado. Todos estamos de acuerdo que, al decir más cosas con menos símbolos o vocablos, se minimizan los tiempos, y se agilizan todos los trámites. Y si no, mira los chinos. Utilizan emojis desde hace 4 o 5 mil años, y están a años luz de nosotros, los europeos indigenizados.

@@TheTORIFICAR I am Gibraltarian and British and proud, I speak both languages and especially proud that I speak spanish with an andalucian accent, Fuck Madrid and their so called proper Spanish. Andalucia is the best !!

Ignoramous,Origin of surnames in the electoral roll by percentage is: British (27%), Spanish (26%, mostly Andalusian but also some 2% Menorcan), Genoese and other Italian (15%), Portuguese (15%), and Maltese (8%). There are also small (less than 1%) populations of other groups such as Moroccans, French, Austrians, Chinese, Japanese, Polish and Danish. How is that even possible to live on the Iberian peninsula and not speak Spanish well? I respect that they want to identify as they wish, but loosing a second language (castellano) or a lovely, quirky dialect (Llanito) is selling your uniquenesses. It sounds artificial to me to not be able to speak Spanish and be of Spanish heritage (they mostly look Spaniard) and live so close too. My guess is that it is politics being shoved down young people’s throats.

Me la sopla que no hable español ninguno o que lo hablen todos. Es irrelevante. La ONU y la legalidad internacional que emana de esta, indican claramente que todos los territorios coloniales tienen que volver a sus países de origen. Está dentro del Comité Especial de Descolonización. Y no me habléis de Ceuta que era Plaza fuerte hispana desde el reino visigodo, mucho antes de cualquier intento de estado marroquí o incluso de que la zona fuese musulmana que es un antecedente cultural muy importante para definir un estado.

Pascoal Freitas neither every Spaniard is dark nor every person who speaks English is as white as a cloud. The majority of people from Spain are white and European descendants, since Spain is a European country and they're not ethnically different from other countries like France or even the UK.
