Bikes, Breakdowns and Baccy

We consider the need for tools for roadside repairs as we ride some Lancashire Lanes, chat over times long past and remember how we misspent our youth.
The John Player Norton team run by Frank Perris in the late sixties /early seventies was, Peter Williams, Phil Read and Dave Croxford. Now 84, Dave still rides and tours such places as Portugal with his wife. Sadly the others have 'moved on'.

Talking of motorcycle tests. I did the old figure of 8 test in the seventies on a BSA C15. Half way around the test, a fire engine had pulled across the road completely blocking my route. The only options were to mount the pavement or to sit it out and wait for it to move. Thankfully I chose the latter; the examiner was waiting on the other side. As the engine pulled away he gave me a nod and I carried on with the test. The longest few minutes of my young life 😅

Great stories Peter. They got me thinking about my Dad’s BSA which, as you might recall, has been around since I was about 2 years old. Most of the photos and my memories of Dad owning the BSA are not as much of him riding it as working to maintain it. Not so these days. Our modern bikes are remarkably reliable and seem to need relatively straightforward servicing. I don’t carry more than the standard tool kit myself. It appears to fit most of the fastenings that could need attention on the road. You have reminded me to get a tubeless puncture repair kit though. I must get onto that! Anyway, that’s enough rambling from me. Time to turn in. All the best, Roy.

Thank you for your great comments Roy, as always. The 125 Bantams and the later 175s were really so reliable but you did have to keep them maintained regularly - that was my downfall in those early days as I couldn't afford to buy any new parts so just 'made do'! Not good.

Hello Peter, thoroughly enjoyed this story telling ride, it's a powerful thing is nostalgia. With regards to tools, whenever I do a distant ride or a tour I always carry a basic tool kit, multi-meter and jump starter. Touch wood I haven't had to use them on my own bikes but I have carried out some running repairs for others including a recent fuse blowing issue on Paul's Honda 400 Four. The backdrop to this ride is lovely. Thanks for sharing your experiences and memories 😃👍

Thank you Dave. Ah yes the fuse blowing 400 4... I think Paul would be very sensible to get a Hunter, especially in Red but I'm totally biased. He'd probably want to keep the Honda especially now the side panel has been so lovingly painted Now that does sound like a useful toolkit - never though about a multimeter. No, I'll stick with UK breakdown recovery I think as I won't be leaving this country. A few tools are always useful though, just to tighten the odd loose mirror 😉. It was Jane that suggested I should be doing more story telling and certainly they seem quite popular - though not with my young Indian audience I suspect. Surprisingly two or three US viewers enjoy them. I always enjoy reading others memories so that's a big part of why I do this story telling. Many thanks for watching and commenting, Dave. Afternoon Peter, cars and bikes of old would breakdown at the drop of a hat. My father used to carry all sorts of tools plus big bottles of water (this was for his car) and motorbikes would also be subject to failing r overheating. I now have minimalistic tool kit, cable ties, electrical tape, puncture repair kit and a couple o spanners, thankfully modern bikes are far more reliable. Some great little tales of old Peter.

Great ride with great stories. As always watching your videos is time well spent. I was lucky and learned to ride off road on a make shift dirt track. What made it different then most was I learned to ride on my neighbors home built speedway bike that I purchased from them when I was 14. I didn’t know it was a speedway bike at the time just that it had a motor and two wheels! Speedway wasn’t a very popular sport here in the early 70’s. Lessons learned on that bike still serve me well today. It wasn’t till years later that I put two and two together. My neighbor always had Jawa’s which were very rare as there were no dealers. I learned that when he came back from the Korean War he stayed in California for a time and was a successful speedway racer for a few years! Thanks for the ride along!

Joe that's just such a wonderful story you've shared with me. I'm very much in awe of those experiences of yours especially riding a Jawa speedway bike. As you say they shape not only how well you ride but also your personality. I grew up among the bomb damage from ww2 in Portsmouth so we had plenty of practice climbing over rubble and twisted metal. No motorcycles that actually ran - we did share a seized up BSA and pushed one another around on it though over the great mounds of earth thrown up by bombs. Great fun. Do you know, as I read your stories those memories of mine came right back. Thank you 😊 Thank you too for taking the time to write of those experiences. Best wishes from the seaside here in the north west 😊

Oulton Park is a great circuit, I marshalled there once when I was 17 but was a bit daunted by it all, I was far too young for such a responsible position. I did enjoy getting to ride my clapped out old two stroke around the circuit though, it went very slowly, made a lot of noise and left clouds of blue smoke trailing behind, much to the amusement of some spectators 😁
