Bikepacking South Wales - Route 47

Day 1 if an overnighter I did. Starting in Newport I follow sustrans Route 47 (NCR47) up into the hills.
It is a beautiful ride and one is recommend, especially if the weather is as nice as it was for me.
I've since discovered that the stretch I do in this (and the next) video is actually part of a longer route called the Celtic Trail cycle route which is now firmly on my list of rides for the future!
Any question about the route or the ride, leave a comment and I'll cast my mind bike and try to answer as best I can.

    This looked such a pleasant, calming ride along, down a brilliant route; and I thoroughly enjoyed it. However, it's a bit of a bizarre one to watch. Somehow, the street sign of Cross Keys is readable and completely normal; yet your Fox t-shirt and the caramel wafer biscuit wrapper are back to front!? Your hair is also miraculously cut and parted on the right; which I feel really weird for noticing..and was almost tempted to not mention, coz it's not the kind of thing a bloke notices..haha! If it wasnt for the Cross Keys, I would have sworn it was a mirrored piece of film..What happened here Jethro..haha!? I'm just going to watch part two in a moment..will this Tom foolery continue..haha! Take care buddy!🤣

    What happened was a new phone. The front facing camera filmed correctly but the selfy camera was set to flip the footage. Hence, shots of me talking to camera are mirrored in this one and probably the next as well.

    From the top of rhigos going west its wonderful ? if you like endless wide busy forest roads , lose fist size gravel , abrasive dust , locked gates ( many off ) , plastic wind turbines and motorways . PS there are some amazing views .

  • @JethroJessop

    @JethroJessop

    The gates are a pain in the arse, I'll give you that. For the rest, I do indeed love forest roads, and found these to be mostly empty and pretty decent surface. I don't want them too smooth or they get boring so rocks and dust is a bonus. I also think wind turbines are great - really elegant and interesting structures. The motorway I won't try and defend but it's only a feature for the end section. On a second ride, I found this route not to be quite as enjoyable as I remember from the first trip but it is still a good one.

    I live in the Netherlands and I lived in Hayling Island in England for about a year to be precise. In that year I made some bike trips along the south coast but that was decades ago. Occasionally I sometimes visit the UK for work (Cambridge area) and I find some regions in England very very beautiful. Only cycling outside the known cycling routes seems risky to me, your infrastructure is not like ours. Traffic is not used to bicycles and some of your countrymen drive like really fast on those narrow country roads. I always on the look out for some nice cycling routes in the UK and Ireland. Kind regards, Eric.

    @@Eric-rt6tg if you want wilderness, off road and gravel riding and don't mind climbing a lot of hills then Wales is a good place to aim for. There is plenty of forestry access that makes good biking and they have a bit of a cycle tourist industry so it is a little better catered for than other places in the UK. Scotland is also fantastic for this though a little further to travel. If I was in NL though I'd also be looking towards Sweden (one of my favourite places to cycle).
