Bike SF: Long ride around SF (San Francisco & Golden Gate Bridge)

2013-10-02 : From the FiDi along the bay to the Golden Gate Bridge over to Marin and to the Mission. 19.3 miles; 1 hour, 42 minutes.
(2019 updated ride: • Bike the Golden Gate B... )
Route: drive.google.com/open?id=1buX...
Start in 100 California coming out of the back (to a concert across the street) on Sacramento St, Front St, Clay St, Drumm St, Washington St, to the Embarcadero along the bay through Jefferson St along Fisherman's Wharf, Aquatic Park, Fort Mason to Marina Blvd and Mason St in the Presidio. Past bits of park closed due to the government shutdown along Crissy Field.
Over to and up Crissy Field Ave to the Battery East Trail (with another road, Long Ave, closed due to government shutdown) and onto the east side of the Golden Gate Bridge around 30:00 (the west, bike only, side is closed, due to the government shutdown?) wading through all the tourists to Marin County to turn around 40:30 and head back to San Francisco.
Off the Golden Gate Bridge back along Battery East Trail but Long Ave is closed and Crissy Field Ave is one way so continue further east on the trail (way-finding would be nice) along Lincoln Blvd. to the Patten Rd trail, and confusingly dumped back on Lincoln Blvd with no way-finding mechanism to know how to get back on it. Sheridan Ave, Graham St, Lincoln Blvd again which becomes Presidio Blvd to Lombard St and out of the Presidio. Lyon St, Francisco St which becomes Alhambra St on to Bay St, Van Ness St down to the Aquatic Park again and 1:12:05 over to run all of Polk St and 10th St and Potrero Ave southbound.
Loop around at Cesar Chavez because by this point it's time to head on back up to Southern Pacific Brewing: Potrero Ave northbound, crossing at 20th St along to Harrison St, 19th St, and on in to Treat Ave.

I first want to say thank you for obeying all the traffic laws. Sometimes I think I'm the only one.... We need to really set an example to the younger riders as well as the ones in our age group and older. A lot of vehicles don't like us because a lot of riders blow through signs/lights...Anyway, I enjoyed the video thanks. I live in Marin so I ride to SF a lot and it just never gets old! P.S., just for those who are tempted to run a stop sign, when I used to be a "nice" police officer, and pull some riders over to have a nice chat I would tell them this: "See The Officer Parked", and also I would share with them that I'm a cycling coach and that it's good to stop because then your building your legs up more and even your cardio. I hope you make some more and please be careful too.

As a hard-of-hearing person with no echolocation, I guess I err on the side of slowing down rather than making noise that may cause someone to step the wrong way (like I sometimes do). I lived in San Francisco for 40 years and loved every minute of it, but as a bike town, I have to say, it's the pits. It would be so easy to create a stronger, safer, more supportive infrastructure there, and get more people out of their cars, but the board of supervisors will not sufficiently commit to the idea. Biking across the GG Bridge is especially telling. People on one side, please, and bikes on the other.

One of the best riding - a - bicycle videos I've seen, of recent. From the video San Francisco looks like a great place to ride a bike. Better than where I live: Fort Worth Texas. A very anti-bicycle city. Within the last two years two great bicycle shops went out of the business; not enough sales.

They've added a positionable jersey barrier in the roadway rather than having guys hanging out of a truck moving soft-hit posts to separate the traffic in each direction. There's also nets to discourage jumpers, but that doesn't always work...see the documentary film "The Bridge" about that.

did the bridge cross in 1983. through the tunnel, down to point reyes and back to 535-39th avenue. it took a good three hours with no breaks no waterbottle or gatorade. just there and back. this is the first s.f. video i've seen that doesn't start in fisherman's wharf, and follow the damn cable car tracks. there's a spot where you cross to the opposite side before the marin side, if i don't remember correctly. maybe something was up back then, and that was necessary. it was underneath the bridge roadway! you had to grab your bike, go down some steps to the other side, and climb back up. it was a real buzz kill. added time. 1:24:00 the front of the dept. of health doorway from invasion of the body snatchers 1978! cool.

On the way back, I get off the bridge @51:00 and retrace my route til @53:00 where I split off down further south into the Presidio eventually going through the 'downtown'/commissary area (mostly non-profits these days) which I approach right after passing one of the few cemeteries left in San Francisco @56:00 up until exiting the Presidio @1:00:51.

The pathway on the other side of the bridge is cyclist-only, but it was closed on this day so I had to mix in with the tourists. Ordinarily there's very few cyclists (usually tourists on rental bikes) on this side of the path. Though they have put in some lane indications (bike each direction, peds close to the railing). But with pedestrians taking pictures, etc. you're always better off cycling on the other side when it's open.

+MrOnyourbike The United States is a very large country with long stretches between cities that developed a centralized distribution system secondary to the automobile in travel. Today we have bike friendly cities of the future like Austin, Seattle, and Portland. Other cities that are dying like Detroit do not take into account the importance of cycling. A trend is now happening in which highly educated and skilled youth are now locating according to pedestrian and cycling options rather than purchasing an automobile. This is also a strategic matter of prolonged health, environmental awareness, and economics. The automobile culture is doomed and I am so very glad.

+ED75804 No, it's not _that_ long a ride. And I didn't have to carry the weight of that sickly girl with the stringy blond hair on my bike constantly crying and refusing to pedal like you did.
