G8s...check. Game changer for me. I suffered from hot spots and other nasties on rides over an hour. Selle saddle...check...I took James' recommendation from another video and went with the narrower version. Lake shoes...check. I went with the CX 241 model after trying 238 and 332. Love, love the fit...so much so that I snapped up an extra pair when Lake introduced new models this year. Lake replaced another brand that would have my dogs barking at the 2 hour mark. Great shoes, but not good enough to suffer. [Note: when going to shops for shoes I asked where their Brannock device was. If they asked "what is a Brannock device?" I bought a few gels and CO2 cannisters and left.] Looking into new bars for gravel bike as the width shipped with my size have my hands much wider than shoulders...thus I don't ride that bike as much. Shoulder and neck pain next day 😢. Thanks Francis and James for an informative video.

James is 100% right. I normally ride 150 mm wide saddle. I tried a 143 mm wide saddle recently, and what a difference! I never in a million years would have considered that my saddle was too wide.

I recently did the same. Went from a 155mm width WTB saddle to a 143mm Ergon and the comparatively tiny Ergon is a lot more comfortable. The model I chose (SL enduro Comp) also has the long pressure relief channel like the Selle Italia that was shown in this video.

How does Sella SMP compare with Sella SLR? I tried an SMP saddle for a while and eventually developed terrible ongoing pain in the perineum due occasionally not getting into the centre cut out straight away more like sitting on the edge of the cut out. I've vowed never to use saddles with cut outs again and have recovered after going back to a traditional saddle. I never feel 100% comfortable though, always end mostly sitting on my RHS butt cheek

@Anthony Jones One source I would suggest for feedback is Amazon shopping for the Selle SLR saddle. There was at least 1 review that called out both Selle saddles and why the SLR was a better fit for at least 1 rider. Also, you may consider posting a product question that may draw out response from users of both. Cheers.

Glad to see James back on the channel. Regarding the saddle - tried it...but no-go for me, surprisingly. Best saddle for me (on all my 3 bikes) is the cursed Power Arc (not Power!) in the 143mm. Got back to it after tryin' the Selle mentioned in this video, Ergon SR Pro and the 3D printed Fizik... Just sayin' for the record that there is an actual living human being who is totally comfortable on the "S" saddle (though Power Arc only). None of my bikes is Specialized. Keep up the great videos on this channel! Tomas

I just got me a pair of Lake CX 332's (the all white version, so no kangaroo leather) and I must say they're the most comfortable cycling shoes I ever had. I used to have "hot feet" when riding more than 100k and even though it hasn't completely disapeared, the "hot feet" problem occurs way later than it used to. What's more, those shoes look incredible in all white !

Nice to hear how my experience in riding and selling bikes matches the presenter's, especially considering frame sizes. Love Deda bars on my road bikes. Only disagree about the cut-out saddle. The theory of the cut-out is "where there is nothing, it cannot create pressure". My experience is "where there is nothing, there is something around that nothing that causes even more pressure". I need a solid, flat area for weight distribution. When you look at most cut-out saddles along the edge from behind, you see quite sharp edges around the hole. That's why saddles are highly individual, you might need to test a few before you "saddle" for one😉.

Hi James. Thanks for the videos, it's really troubling the number of cyclist how are having a terrible time on there bikes because no time or effort was put into bike fit. This a weakness the bike industry as a whole needs to address. Two products that I have had positive results with are the Terry Liberator saddles, and Shimano bar end shifters. Terry was the first person to make a serous women's saddle, was the company that invented the relief channel, and brought improved comfort (for the first time) to many women. I think she was the first one to address problem of women not wanting to ride on badly fitting men's bikes. I see allot of products based on her work. I have also had good results with bar end shifters. STI shifters were built around men's hands, and people with smaller hands, mostly women, have difficult reaching from from the hoods to the levers. Bar ends work with hands of all sizes, and help short armed ridders with reach. As they are installed 5 inches closer to the ridder, reach is no longer a problem. They are also a well made product. As we say "food for thought. I would love to hear your ideas on these issues. Take care. Tom

I have found that for walking and running, barefoot shoes have made a hugely positive difference to my life. I am therefore dubious about the need for custom innersoles. I realise that cycling places different forces on your body than walking and running, but I'm not convinced that adding more support to my feet whilst riding will be a benefit to me. Tell me why please, James.

  • @bgruber

    @bgruber

well, i am with you on the walking in barefoot shoes and the positive impacts on posture etc. what is, imho, the difference is that during cycling you have a very reduce stimulation / loading of the foot. basically you're stepping on the same spot with a similar force all the time. this creates nerve and bloodflow issues. when walking or running you're not putting your foot through this, there is constantly changing stimulation, even on a treatmill. Thats my take on it. but i am sure james will have a better explanation ^^

So what about a shoe for “duck feet”? I have a narrow heel and long, flat toes. Current shoes are old Sidi Dominators with custom footbeds & cork bottoms on the footbeds to take up a bit more space. It’s an OK fit with thicker socks, but feels loose with a summer weight cycling sock unless the straps are cranked down too tight for comfort. Sidi at the time made a narrow version, but my toes were too long / wide for them. Every shoe I’ve tried I end up with a bulge of fabric on the top of the shoe - Shimano, specialized, Garneau, Fizik… Haven’t had a chance to try DMT, Giro, or Bont yet.

What might be a negative side of the Brannock device is that it assumes "wide" feet are wide all the way across the length from toe to heel, where most people only need the width in the toes and ball of foot. The muscles from the toes span the length of the foot, strengthening the arch and reaching up the leg (more muscles to work out, lol) - restricting the width across the toes for long periods of time over the course of months and years can create different problems with the feet such as atrophy of some of those muscles in the arch, hallux, etc. It's a shame there are no cycling shoes to accommodate this without going fully custom, maybe sometime in the future 😅

I tried the SLR in a fit and the cut out edges just dig in inside my thighs like sharp knives. My preferred position is to ride with hips rolled forward, hence why "sit at the back" saddles never worked. Fitter suggested the PRO stealth which does not feel as supportive riding more upright, but allowed me to roll the hips forward without any pressure. And no cut out digging in either

From my point of view I have to disagree with the pressure mapping. So I tried now several saddles (also with pressure mapping) and was nonetheless not able to find the perfect one yet. In my experience a pressure map is surely an indicator if a saddle might work for you (or not), but at the end only time will tell if you feel comfortable longterm perspectively.

Don’t worry about the lake kangaroo leather . (Vegans) we have way to many here in Australia. They get culled, farmed, killed on highways by the 1000s every day. And numbers aren’t harmed .

James is the only bikefitter on youtube who makes sense to me. The other folks give advice that doesn’t sound good to me. James is fantastic.

Missed James’ gravely voice. Wish I’d known he was up, I’d have taken him out for a beer ☺️

Keen so see a bike fitters review of the new Lake CX242 - could these be the ideal racing shoes for wonky feet?
