BIGSCREEN BEYOND First Impressions, How To Wear It, Quirks, A MUST BUY ACCESSORY, Audio Solutions

GAMER Z3RO doing a first impression/review of the BIGSCREEN BEYOND PCVR Headset. I'm discussing the Face Gasket and how it is different than every other VR Headset on the market, how you're suppose to wear the headset to get into the best sweet spot for the lenses, the headstrap and the MUST BUY ACCESSORY for the head strap (AMVR Headpad for Quest 2), how light and fantastic the headset really is and lastly I discuss my go to audio solution for the headset right now.

    Just got my Beyond today and this video was SUPER helpful, thank you. There's a lot to love about the Beyond coming from Index, but yeah, the glare and sweet spot issues were reeally bumming me out. Repositioning the HMD on the eyebrows definitely helped. It's going to take some getting used to. The head pad you recommend is sold out on amazon at the moment. I pre-ordered the Beyond audio strap, will be curious to hear what you have to say about that when it comes out.

    @@weakbruteforce, for the Bigscreen to work you'll need at least 1 lighthouse for tracking. If you're doing sim racing you can get away with using 1 lughthouse. Majority of the people have either the Vive wands or the Valve Knuckles controllers, but any of the SteamVR controllers will work and are needed.

    @@gamer.z3ro you are right, the more I use the headset, the more I enjoy it! I’ve heard that asking BSB support for a thinner gasket is an option, so I’ve done that and hoping that helps improve the horizontal FOV a bit, as that’s my only real complaint, you really have to look with head movement vs your eyes as the sweetspot isn’t massive. That, and I guess the glare? The glare almost looks like smudging within the optic layers, but it’s not TOO bad, but is a bit annoying.

    What are you running on the PC side? How is your head room? Is an I7 with a RTX 4070ti enough for the typical HL Alyx, Population one type of games. Also with the headset on the eyebrows does it eliminate the glare or just reduce it? Thanks

  • @gamer.z3ro

    @gamer.z3ro

    I have an Intel 13900k and a 4090 GPU. Your 4070ti will be more than enough. As far as the wearing the headset. Keeping the top of he face gasket on your brow is how it should be worn. The glare is a pancake lenses issue and will be there no matter what. However, when you wear the headset in the correct place the glare is on the bottom of your vision so it isn't very noticeable in most scenarios. What I have been able to do (because of the small form factor and minimal weight of the headset) is move my head quicker instead of moving my eyes and I am always in the sweet spot and have the best clarity.

Currently using a Quest 2 and not sure if I was lucky but the edge to edge clarity is great. I had the Aero and getting the Quest 3 next week, so not sure if the e2e clarity of the Beyond will let me down in comparison.

    The Bigscreen e2e clarity does fall off around the edges. However, when I am playing in my league matches in Onward I seriously don't notice the glare or the clarity dropping off at all. And I am laser focused on trying to spot the enemies at a distance so to not see glare or anything off is huge for me. The Aero is an excellent headset. I had one for about a week and returned it because the FOV was terrible. I also didn't like the color red and blue and how it was in the headset. The Quest 3 will have the best lenses. The e2e clarity is the best in the business. In my opinion the Quest 3 will be the best headset in the world because of the e2e clarity, the amount of aftermarket stuff for it, it can be stand alone and PCVR. However, I will still use the Bigscreen Beyond as my daily headset because of the small and light form factor and better overall resolution.

    So, I will say that your Pimax Crystal will have better clarity and their lenses don't have any of the glare. Even with the Quest Pro and Quest 3... the glare won't be there and the edge to edge clarity will be better. The whole reason anyone should be buying the Bigscreen Beyond is an upgrade for their current Lighthouse tracked headset (Vive, Vive Pro, Vive Pro 2, Valve Index, etc.) and they want a headset that is lightweight, small and compact. This headset still has it's flaws such as the glare and lack of audio solution built in. The audio strap will cover one of those issues, but the glare is still there and will always be there. If you can live with it, great. I know I can live with it.

If you were to buy the Bigscreen Beyond you'll also need at least 2 lighthouses and controllers so that is an additional $500-$600 on top of the BSB cost. The only downside to the Quest 3 is battery life and lack of great options at this moment. I know within a few weeks/months there will be a ton more options for external batteries and such. It will be a BIg jump in clarity and optics from the Quest 2. I personally have a Quest Pro and the optics and sweet spot is amazing. I think the Bigscreen Beyond is a headset for people already in the SteamVR ecosystem and already have a PC and lighthouses and controllers. I couldn’t in good faith tell someone to buy this headset, lighthouses, controllers and a gaming PC when the Quest 3 is an option at only $500. A good upgrade for you would be: Quest 3 and possibly the Quest Pro controllers (they track REALLY well).
