Sorry to sound like a rookie here but what is the point of grinding up these large tree trunks? Couldn't they be milled into lumber? I would think that lumber would be more valuable than sawdust or wood chips. Any explanations?

It depends on the quality of the lumber. Most logging companies will only pick the best trees for logging purposes, sometimes a tree just isn't up to their standards. They get to pick and choose what they want to use for lumber. So whoever has excess that the logging companies don't want has to chip it or do something with it, my best guess is most find it easier to hire a chipper and be done with it. Pulp mills also have similar standards as regards what they consider acceptable for chippings that they take to turn into paper or cardboard.

Stop thinking cos you're wrong. Lumber is far more valuable than chips for fuel . If they could of used it for lumber , they would of .

@@DarkVoidIII I hear you but I would think that even low-grade lumber has to be more valuable than chips or sawdust. But... I might be wrong.
