Kobe if I remember right was the first high-schooler drafted who wasn't a Big Man. I was living in the Bay Area and I remember seeing a pre-draft article about him, he spoke Italian since his dad had played bball in Italy, etc. was hoping the Warriors would take that chance, but the reality is the Warriors needed a quality Big Man more than another guard.

They had some decent talent, yes but they were still an awful team...

That hurt me deeply. I remember that draft like it was yesterday. Fuller was touted as “a high quality person”. One has to keep in mind that this was following Latrell Spreewell’ choking the shit out of that asshole P.J. Carlisimo. I couldn’t fault Spree with that-PJ was a screamer and had an incredibly annoying voice. These were the years when we (as Dubs fans) when a 17 win season was considered encouraging. Dark days…..

Swish, remember its easier looking back and deciding what you would have done differently than making an impactful draft pick in the moment. By the time the Warriors drafted Fuller most of the best choices were gone. '96 was a lean year. Yes, there were All-Stars picked later in the draft AND Kobe, btw, told the NBA exec's not to draft him cuz he won't play for anyone but the Lakers. There was zero chance Kobe would have been a Warrior. I'm more surprised the Warriors didn't complete the draft and trade like Charlotte. Warriors should at least have gone with a proven big instead of Fuller. Obviously, if they really wanted draft a big then they should have taken O'neal. P.J. loved players he could bully that still had the "college mindset". Fuller was that guy. During the 90s the Warriors seem more focused on drafting bigs, which is why they passed on almost all guards during the 90s. What was more tragic was that the Warriors draft and trade of Penny Hardaway, a '98 pick (Vince Carter), and a '01 pick (Mike Miller), for Chris Webber and '96 pick (Fuller)

I've heard this take. Steph Curry wanted to play for the Knicks too. Draft picks don't get to decide their team though. Playing in the NBA is a privilege and he would've had a contract and abided by it.

@@SwishCulture Kobe (at least the way I remember it) not only told NBA franchises that he would only play for the Lakers, but if drafted by any other team he would either go to college or to Europe, which was viable since he spent significant time in Italy as a child. High school to the Pro's was still considered by most to be a HUGE risk regardless of the ones that were successful in making the transition. True, Curry wanted to play for the Knicks, but he didn't make a threat or issue an ultimatum in regards to franchises that may draft him.

@@stevenielsen5217 Let me ask you this. Are you saying that knowing everything NBA teams know now. He's still going 13th to the Lakers? A Philly product to slight his home team? 😬 Doesn't matter. They're drafting him and if he doesn't want to play in the NBA that's on him.

@@SwishCulture First off, you can't take what NBA teams know now and apply it to a past decision, that is the equivalent of knowing the future and then no NBA teams would ever make poor draft picks. Philly drafted A.I. #1 in the draft in '96 coming out of Georgetown in the Big East. Are you saying they Philly made a mistake and should have taken high schooler Kobe?? Really?

@@stevenielsen5217 I can when it's to prove a point. You're saying that no matter what Kobe was not going to be on an NBA team if it wasn't the Lakers. You're saying that Kobe threatened NBA teams in the league, a team that was going to pay him, that he would not play for them. No undrafted player has that power. Not even superstars have that power. Where's Dame? Of course we can't look back EVERY single time and say this was a dumb move, but we certainly can a lot of the times. We've seen recent draft blunders, many of which occur due to political reasons. This is no different. Where's Luka? Where's LaMelo? Ask Vlade Divac & Steve Kerr I'm also saying, if Philly knew then what they know now. They're not taking Iverson #1. Theoretically speaking, as the draft number increases and approaches the actual pick, the gravity of the mistake increases. That means, the Hornets were the biggest losers in this scenario, more so than the Warriors. The Sixers' made the "smallest" bit of error. Unless you draft the best player at #1, your drafting wasn't bulletproof.
