Biggest Thing in the Universe: The Hercules-Corona Borealis Great Wall (Gamma Ray Burst Wall)

Ғылым және технология

Size epitomises the universe... but as numbers climb, the question is what is the largest thing we have ever found? Well, the current largest-known cosmic structure, by definition, is the so-called Hercules-Corona Borealis Great Wall. This suspected galaxy filament was discovered through its apparent high frequency of Gamma Ray Bursts, and currently is the only structure in the universe known to exceed 10 billion light years. But the nature of the wall is still shrouded in mystery. Everything from its name, to its size, to its formation is debated by scientists... but with similar discoveries of massive GRB formations, our knowledge of distribution, matter and creation within the bounds of this universe is being pushed to the limit.

Keep in mind that a gamma Ray burst is a one time event. Quasars are (relatively) in the same place night to night. It's like measuring the dimensions of a enormous Christmas Tree with only 19 lights flashing once and only once; each one at a different time. As opposed to measuring the dimensions of the same tree using a few more lights that are always lit.

The great wall would be a great setting for a distant future sci-fi novel or other art media, I can imagine an ever expanding civilization at the end of time beating the clock and looking out into unimaginable darkness that swallows the great wall whole when everything else moves too far away

Literally thinking of space and all the vast distances, the depths of time and space and how insanely small and insignificant we are is the only thing that helps me deal with trauma and with the thought of our impending extinction due to climate change. I just think of the universe, and how statistically there should be lots of other life forms out there, even lots of intelligent other life forms, and whatever happens here doesn’t seem so important anymore.

I absolutely love how this video went into such staunch detail about the mathematical tests performed by the scientists who discovered this structure. I'm no astronomer and love watching videos like this, and have a natural hesitation to believe certain astronomical observations made in YT videos without evidence. I appreciate the video showing the plots and statistical significance values to show how bizarre the existence of such a structure is, and that makes it so much more believable as a viewer. I love space!!!

Excellent video. If you were my professor I would definitely be paying attention, the way you explain everything you provide such detail that I really don’t need a picture to look at. It opens my mind to see exactly what you are talking about. For some reason my mind can make every detail a clear picture, sometimes a small movie. Thank you for the video.

Just because there is so much matter that we can barely comprehend, it doesn't suddenly invalidate our emotions, concerns and will. To think that it does will almost certainly make you a nihilist, you'll lose friends, disappoint people, and life would be dreadful. The solution is to do with proper priorities.

The more I learn about space and the Universe, the more I believe "everything" we know of is a VERY, VERY small part of a much bigger collective "thing". Basically, our entire universe is the smallest part of a particle of a grain of sand that lies on a beach the size of which your mind couldn't comprehend if you tried. Look up "Graham's number". I think our planet is 3^3, our galaxy is 3^^3, our universe is 3^^^^3 and the grain of sand that our universe "particle" makes up is G64. The beach would be Loader's Number (which makes Graham's number effectively zero as it grows). Of course I'm not talking about an actual grain of sand or a beach, but, structures that we are too small to understand.
