FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

I was watching AOPA's channel a while back when, at the end, there was a message about keeping GA alive. It was ironic after such a boring, poorly edited program. When I commented, they pointed me to FlyBy, their program for pilots with ADD. Really, though, if you want to attract young people, channels like this one may be the answer. Better video, better editing and better personality than AOPA. We need the AOPA for many reasons, but old people with deeper pockets drive most of GA, and that may just be the problem with recruting new pilots.

Line up is simple if you imagine wearing roller skates. No matter the aircraft size or configuration, just put your skates on both sides of the centerline like you’re guiding on a metal rail. It’s amazing how the visualization of wheels on your feet gives you instant feedback to ride that virtual rail.

I realize I'm a bit late on this, but a build series would be great. There are a few Vans build video series out there, both overview and detail, and they all go a long way into dispelling the impression that a traditional riveted aircraft is hard to do. I've been kicking around building for years, and I was leaning towards all Blind Rivet (Pop-style) because I didn't want to deal with solid rivets. Watching on builder in particular working on his RV-10 really brought in the reality that it CAN be done. The KZread is Jason Ellis shows his mistakes as well. Couple that with the folks at Vans itself, and the builder community, and it takes what was an overwhelming prospect, and makes it doable. I'm leaning towards an 8 for myself, just because the size, performance, and configuration suit me. Good Luck Steve, and Clear Skies

Jason Ellis has done a great job documenting his RV-10 build on KZread. Take a look at that if you want to know what you'll be getting into as a builder. I'm 3.5 years into my RV-10 build and maybe a month or two from being complete. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would.

Hey Chops.. nice to see these two videos.. As a first-time builder, i picked the -12 because it was the easiest/fastest to build and i didn’t want to bite off more than i could chew. I’m 75% done and i wish i went for the -9 or -14 .. not because my mission changed or i made the wrong choice, but because i know my build will be done soon and i feel like i will miss building after it’s done! already thinking about building a “spare” plane 🤣

I own an RV-14A empennage kit and need motivation to keep working on it. There is very little high quality video of the building process. Would definitely be interested in watching you build an RV.

Get an RV-14 and get it painted like the Canadian T6 you fly.

That's kinda the plan - Yellow base coat and I'd love to throw some blue highlights and the FC logo some how tastefully - But yeah, it would be sort of an honorary "Yellow Bird" and fly in formation with them! (as well as be a support plane for events / trips with the fleet.)

It would be fresh, most people usually go the Mustang route for the paint job.

I had to go back and look into them again, after your review of the RV10. I've been looking into home built.

After years of flying, I would love to try manufacturing and assembling an aircraft, all of the stamping, cutting and bending processes seem enormously fun!

Obviously, I think the RV10 is a better airplane for you, and I bet of Vans offered a tail wheel version of it, you'd be all over it! I do hope you document a build on it, that would be seriously cool.

Those truly are some of the best home built aircraft on the market today. I've seen some that would rival a Rolls Royce for the interior finish.

Build one please! I have been thinking about an Rv 7 or 14 in a couple of years or the Rans S21 Outbound but leaning to more speed with the RV. It will be very educational to have your documented build as a help should I get to build one.

Really interested in a series on the build process. I was at Vans several months ago and flew in the 9, the 14 wasn’t available... My goal is to stop the dream and start a project in the next few years. That demo flight had me sold on Vans. Love the channel!

Van's are the best. Every time I'd start to question my workmanship, or the quality of the aircraft, I'd go poke my head inside a certified aircraft and be quickly reassured :). If you ever want to make a video of some RV-7 aerobatics, just let me know.
