Great video! I love when homesteaders show there mistakes to help educate this community and maybe help someone else not make those same mistakes!
Lol. With pigs, life finds a way. I respect your honesty telling this story from your homestead. Your pig hut, as we like to say, function over form. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
We breed IPP! There is a group on FB that is super helpful! Congrats on the new babies!

@@BetterTogetherLife I'm in South Mississippi. 😊 Found one on the registry site you provided. I might venture out to a different state like Louisiana or Alabama. If we don't do IPP it's not the end of the world since we also want a couple pigs that can really root up the ground for us. So one set for pasture and one set to clear land (goats were not it for us).
I was just thinking about you guys..glad all went well! Life on a farm/homestead isn’t always perfect ❤️
Thank you for sharing the reality of homesteading. It’s not always pretty and at times it’s going to be sad, but most people who follow you are understanding that there will be mistakes while learning, so don’t sweat it and keep sharing. In the words of Meatloaf, “2 out of 3 ain’t bad!” 👨🎤

Even if you had everything in place with the timing right, you might have still lost a piglet or two. The baby might not have been stillborn, she may have laid on it. It happens even with well experienced sows who have farrowed many times. It just happens. I appreciate that you guys roll with the punches and show everything - the good and the bad and the mistakes. Way to keep it real!

The fact that you are raising a good homestead breed with solid genetics helps a lot. Humans tend to breed for extremes which is where the problems come in.

Hi..... Thank you for showing your video homestead 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 👕🐔🐓🐣🐥🐕🐈🐄🐖🌱🏡🎥👍👍👍
from my personal experience, around 50 days you can tell if they are pregnant or not, that's usually when pigs in confinements are checked for pregnancy. If you're willing to touch their belly, you can feel it too, there were many times i knew without a pregnancy test machine just on the way the belly felt, if they are saggy/wrinkly instead of tighter they likely arent pregnant
Why ipp? Are they for food? Never heard of them. Congrats tho!!
They look healthy .
The piglets are so cute. Pigs can come in heat at three weeks and most pigs will stand still to be mounted believe me when they want to do it they'll always find a way. If I'm not sure when one of my guilts has breaded when it looks real close to her delivering just try to express milk If milk can be expressed normally within a day or two they'll have their babies and soon after their back in heat. I wish you the best with your pigs and that little one that looks like it will soon be here

sorry IPP! oops!
Please tell me someone has given them advice about swine
The deed is done and y’all got super lucky but just a heads up for future pigs cause hopefully y’all raise IPPs for many years to come but they should be bred around 8months old(200-220lbs) and no later than 12 months old. The reason I said lucky is because breeding around 4-6 months old for IPPs can cause the sow to die in labor(this just happened with a customer of ours that had her boar break in with their gilt). A small litter was the best case scenario here. The IPP community on FB is super supportive and most breeders are very happy to help, please feel free to reach out to our farm if you ever have questions that we could help you with in the future with them. IPPs are the vast majority of what we do, and we love being able to help new growers be successful with this amazing breed. Wishing y’all the best!

Can I ask why you should not breed a pig past 12 months? Am I understanding you right?
@greenthicketfarm
Жыл бұрын
@@spoolsandbobbins for their first farrowing correct. The ideal window to not run into birthing complications is to breed a gilt between 8-12 months old for your average breeds, some of those commercial line hogs can safely be bred at 6 months, and some of the really slow growing lard breeds can be bred a little later, but in general the 8-12 month old window is a good target. Younger or older than that and you risk her having severe farrowing complications.
I just lost a litter. We weren't expecting piglets for 2 weeks and there wasn't a decent nesting option in the pen. I probably wrote down the wrong date. By the way, fat blindness is a thing in pigs.

My only question is how long was it dead.. 0h, and did you roast it? So, two questions.
@BetterTogetherLife
2 жыл бұрын
We aren’t sure how long. And no, we didn’t eat it because we weren’t sure if it died inside of her or outside. The look of the baby I am sure it was still born. Which you wouldn’t want to eat.
You briefly mentioned, “these are IPPs that are being forested” is that a bad thing? Can you all expound?
@BetterTogetherLife
9 ай бұрын
It is not a bad thing. 👍🏻
It’s a perfect mistake and a perfect piggy palace!
It's certainly not as huge of a deal as some people are making it out to be. I just had two sows who conceived around 6 months drop litters, one had 12 piglets, the other had 9. happy healthy litters and happy healthy moms. No matter what you do, there's going to be incidences of still born, or issues that may arise, it will happen. You're not going to avoid that altogether. Just like at some point, a sow is going to unintentionally lay on a piglet. They'll be times where a piglet can get stuck in the canal, and then that will cause any piglets after that to be still born if you don't get it out in time or you could lose the Sow as well. But these are all complications that just happen with breeding. It has really nothing to do with them being bred before 9 months. So, As long as they carried fine and delivered fine, there's really not a big deal. Ranchers around here will tell you it's more preference than a hard rule. They're sexually mature for a reason.

Joseph, we did not act like it was nothing. The title is “biggest mistake”. We messed up, and wanted to share so others can learn from our mistake. What is your expectation from us? Do you want any us to sell the farm and quit? Should we beg forgiveness from the KZread audience? What would you like for us to do?
We all make mistakes. I remember I went to go pick up a cat. I knew she was unspayed, the father was in the house, as was her last litter. Her last litter was only 12 weeks. And in my mind, there's no way she could already be pregnant. None of my cats are out door cats and we had no males in the house. And if we did have a male, he would have been neutered. So I figured it would be fine. I would get her spayed in the summer. A month after getting her, she gave birth to 5 kittens. Yeah they can breed back within 2 weeks of giving birth. It's not healthy. But they can. Lesson learned. Had some minor issues with one kitten, but he grew into the fiestiest of the litter. We kept on kitten who is now 3. She's such a sassy cat. A happy little accident if you will. But I remember being very worried about their mom (who is still with us). She was only 2 when we got her and this was her 3rd litter. And she was perfect body condition for a not pregnant cat...and the stress of coming to a new home...a very busy home at that. She did great. She adopted my mom despite the fact that she was supposed to be mine haha. My parents are moving soon and it will be the first time mom and daughter will be separated. I don't think mom will care. I think daughter will have a bit tougher time.
