One thing that's appealing about older video games is the way developers made games with the tools and technology they had available at the time. Is not just nostalgia. Any piece of hardware has it's limitations and developers have to work around those limitations, however those limitations can also open the door for new innovative ideas. Super Mario 64 for example, they couldn't fit as many courses in the cartridge compared to Super Mario World so their idea was to make fewer non-linear courses and give you multiple objectives to complete in them. They made an entirely new game genre by being forced to reinvent the wheel about what a platformer could be based on the limitations of the hardware. It's the same feeling you get when you watch an older film and you see the different approaches to cinematography they had to deal with. It makes you appreciate the work that goes into making these games.

Biggest misconception that brothers me would be that older video games are just not as good. Video games are akin to music in that if it is well constructed it will remain appreciated and respected. Does anyone refuse to listen to music from the past just because it is not current? No. Then why would anyone assume that an older game is no longer worth their time because it too is not current?

@@RetroBirdGaming Now that I can understand completely. I don't have time to sit down and play a 200 hour game on top of loading times, updates, etc. I haven't played some very popular games due to this such as Skyrim, Grand Theft Autos, and Final Fantasys (minus the NES one) for example. It's a bit disheartening that all this focus has been put on graphics and actual game play has seem to go by the wayside. Not in every instance obviously but in general. You die in a modern game? No problem. Just try again. You die in Castlevania, well you better improve those skills or you are not going to see much of the game lol. Side note: Finally bear Rocket Knight Adventures yesterday. Great game but man did that upside down level give me problems. Took me forever to realize you can look at the bottom. Laughed at myself for a while over that one.

The misconception that retro gamers don't like or appreciate newer games ignores the fact that newer games are the result of multi-generational evolutions in design. You don't get to Skyrim on Xbox without open worlds like The Legend of Zelda on the NES. I can have a maybe deeper appreciation for a modern game than a non-retro gamer because I can look back on decades of growth in gaming and can see the many improvements that have occured over the years. My son is 10, and while he may think that Minecraft is the "be all, end all" experience in gaming, he lacks the experience and perspective to appreciate WHY a game like that exists in the first place. He wasn't around for Actraiser or SimCity or Civilization or Theme Hospital or The Sims. All that freedom to build a world he so chooses came from many earlier iterations and innovations that he's never heard of or played. My retro library isn't just for my entertainment; it's for my kids' education. In the same way that my copy of The Odyssey paves the way for my kids to enjoy Harry Potter, my copy of City Connection does as well for Rocket League. Also, Trader Tots.

As the Core "Old World" Monster Hunter games are, ultimately, turn based when you get good at playing them The difference is instead of relying on a Defense Stat, you have your Evasion Stat put through the roof by having the player be in charge of that one. Where as in Turn Based RPGs Evasion is just a number... and a Jail Cell is just a room... that is how that saying goes, right?

That's just overgeneralization at it's finest... Which is irritating for even some one like me with most outsiders in the realm of my own knowledge.. They talk like they're big fans/super in-the-know of the subject they are speaking on... but feel as if they're not if they're complaining on something in the angle that makes them _not._ I'm even guilty of this sometimes... But get better the more time I get to spend with them/it.. Just as the most diehard fans get their opinions made with it, are.. Everything is too immediate these days.. Reviews included.. Just as their ADHD-ready/anxious reviews (which are basically the equivalent of opinionated comments these days) are just as empty as those complaining,.. Haven't gave it enough time.

From research mostly (Wii U and Vita I have experience with) I feel the same with the Wii U (going off experience with it as a collector first owning it since 2018), underrated console like.the Dreamcast but small and great library to collect for. Not terrible like consoles with smaller libraries with 4 games like the Hyperscan with literally nothing to offer unless a collector into a novality item or making a KZread video about it. I didn’t even realize that the Super Nintendo was as old as it was back when I was little I just thought that the games were going for that graphical style rather than they were older than games on the Dreamcast. The first game I ever remember playing was Donkey Kong Country on the SNES which is still in my top 5 favorite games of all time. I switched from console gaming to exclusively PC gaming in about 94, all the way up until the late 20-teens and I'm finally going back and exploring what I missed. I never had a Super Nintendo either, so I get to explore that library with fresh eyes.

I know I've said this to you before, and I'll say it again, the first two generations of 2-D games don't look that great, like the first generation of 3-D games, but their graphics don't get a bad rap, because they were released before the North America video game boom of 1986. Henceforth, not as many people played them/have nostalgia for them, so they are not af critiqued, as much. 3-D video game graphics did NOT have the luxury of being postponed for 5 years, because whichever console could do 3-D, could be heavily advertised, because people CRAVED being able to play in an extra dimension. It's like saying, "The ENTIRE video games industry should have started developing two-dimensional games in 1983, instead of 1972, so that their graphics would look better." Also, "blocky" graphics were NOT a deterrent, due to the amount of extra-dimensional play area people now had. There WAS no precedent on what are GOOD 3-D graphics, until the HD era of video gaming. It's like telling a 1960's muscle car fan that his beloved cat steers and brakes horribly. Driving a modern muscle car gives one perspective, but that doesn't mean thay his beloved cars shouldn't have been developed, when he was in his prime. Also, I like the comedic spray of ketchup, into your mouth. 👌

Excellent points and well-articulated as usual. I especially like the way you explained the lack of a precedent for 3D games. I wasn't necessarily saying that it was realistic for the gaming industry to stick with 2D for longer, but just from a fan's perspective it's cool to think about "what if".

  • @badreality2

    @badreality2

@@RetroBirdGaming @Retro Bird Thank you for the compliment! I self-taught myself to argue points through definitive reasoning, and it has paid off in spades! That is true, it is cool to think about the "what if". The 2-D games on the Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64, and Playstation, look BEAUTIFUL, but if video games companies were still 2-D focused, I would miss some of best 3-D games made, like Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie. In 2002, Rareware was sold by Nintendo, to Microsoft, where they were micromanaged into submission. Naughty Dog was only interested in making Crash Bandicoot during the PS1 era, and that was it! ...if they made him for a primarily 2-D system his gameplay would have started out very differently. If technology isn't released sooner, than later. Some games (or anything really), doesn't reach its full potential. One thing you got mostly wrong in this video, is that blowing into one's carriage does not help with the electrical connections. ...more than a reseating is being done. Moisture is being blown onto the connector, and when it is reaseated, it makes better electrical contact. A study was done doing this, with its control being compressed air. Blowing was always more successful. Though, as we all know now, a thorough alcohol cleaning is now the recommended cleaning method.

Older post, I know, but you made some good points! I'd like to add that we can see some evidence of what would have happened, had 3D graphics been postponed until the tech could catch up: High-end '90s games that were ahead of their time. The Dreamcast had roughly PS2-level hardware, but a lot of its games- even exclusives- looked kind of awkward, like N64 games with more polygons and sharper textures. (Some early PS2 games are in the same boat.) Same goes for the similarly capable Model 3 arcade system in 1996, or even the less advanced Sega Model 2 and Namco's System 22 in 1993 (either of which easily outperformed the PS1 or N64). The hardware was there, but the graphical techniques found in newer games simply didn't exist, until people experimented to see what could be done. Contrast this to games found on weaker systems like the PSP or 3DS in later decades. PS: I did find the blockiness of N64 and PS1 graphics off-putting at the time, and it took quite some time to warm up to them. Now I'm really fond of that era, for some reason.

I’ve been replaying some old PS1 games recently. Not all of the 3D aged that poorly. I think the Ridge Racer games still look fine, but that’s probably me just liking the aesthetic. And Tobal No.1 looks outright good still. The morphing textures is honestly the biggest problem, and flat polygons with a face texture. But some artists who understood the limits could create games that aged fine even though it’s from the PS1 3D era. Jumping Flash, Wipe out series, Horned Owl, Zero Divide, and I’m probably missing a lot. They didn’t really push the hardware, but looked great. It’s when they push the hardware is when things go pear shaped.

My kids grew up playing these games together with me and my wife. I don’t think they have misconceptions (rather accurate conceptions) as we can laugh together at the ones that don’t hold up but they recognize how awesome and ridiculous some of the story concepts are, and how innovative they were for the time. It’s all perspective. No matter the age I think people will enjoy a lot of games that stood the test of time. Case in point…I can’t get my 14 year old to play anything other than Fortnite. Yet he sat down and played through Contra with me the other night and had a great time. Same concept with movies. My 11 year old loves Spaceballs but there are other movies from back then that I loved but we now agree they stink. We did the same thing back then. Once a new generation console came out it blew away the games of the previous. But this is all in how I personally raised mine. I can understand the misconceptions from someone coming in cold. You made a great point about people selling off games. However I really wish I hadn’t sold all my Atari games back then just so I could play Faxanadu.

Another solution is to use a smaller TV, of around 20-25 inches diagonal, that is more representative of the size of TV used back in the day. A 1080 set ins important. A 4K set can be difficult to put retro games on and a good upscaler can cost about as much as 10-20 good action(non-rpg) games

I still remember the first time my Dad presented to me Mario 64, on Project 64, and I was like "Wow! It's 3D! Everything here is different!". When I got older, I learned how to download roms and emulators myself, and from there, the door was blown right open. If it EXISTS, I can play it. No need to ask my parents to buy games. I never even SAW a PS1 but I still had a great time with PSX-Fin and some BINs I downloaded from Rox-Roms. Only problem was Wii and Gamecube games, which are harder to emulate. But after softmodding my Wii and installing Nintendon't, I went from being a slave of the system to being the king of it! "You can't tell me what I can or cannot play, you little plastic brick! I'm gonna play whatever I want and YOU WILL RUN IT!" Talking about being a little rebel. I grew up with retro games despite most of them coming before I was even born. I dream of one day having a room with retro consoles, upscalers, flashcarts, ODSs, a closet for controllers, TV in middle and a large couch. Now that's a life!

If they ran at 30, then there's a good chance that they were janky, B/C-tier games that aren't so well remembered, anyway. One cool thing about emulators is that they can bring a lot of N64-era games up to 60fps. Some need a Game Shark code to take advantage of the improved performance, but others are already programmed to run at 60, so they just need the overclock settings turned up. I've found it surprising just how many games from that time can hold 60fps when the hardware limitations are pushed out of the way.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on NES, for example, is a so-called "bad game" because it's a licensed game off a popular property (which often WERE shovelware, but I'm not discussing that yet), and had glaring issues (respawning and reshuffling enemies are common, limited continues, and the infamous "dam level"). Zelda 2 is a "bad game" because it's a member of a popular franchise that deviates from it's source too far. Simon's Quest is a "bad game" because it, too, deviates from the original too far, and is hampered by "bad translation" (which other gaming talking heads with more time than I have today have addressed). Every one of those "bad games" was beloved on my playgrounds growing up in the 80s, because every one of them differed from and added to what came before. Whatever technical limitations or hitches they suffered from can and often should be written off as growing pains for the concepts of gaming, and no childhood memory I have contains the words "this game sucks because you can only continue 3 times", or "this is too hard". We accepted many of these games with our hard-earned paper-route money or allowances, or birthday or holiday gifts, not always out of necessity (although that certainly was a factor), but because we hadn't had anything else to compare them to and blur our perspective. TMNT on NES had the honor of not only being a tribute to it's cartoon namesake and to the indie comic that spawned it, it was unique and had many admirable qualities. The idea of each member of the team being a "life" in your playthrough, with his own health and weapons, had never been tried before, and seldom since (only Aliens Infestation or Mummy Demastered come close in the modern era, IIRC). Zelda 2 was looking to expand the world, lore and gameplay options of it's predecessor with the tropes of the genre Zelda 1 had helped develop. Simon's Quest also attempted this, and it's non-linearity was probably directly responsible for the famed Symphony Of The Night. Iga knew there was potential in the Simon's Quest formula, and refined it 'til it became a genre-namer (alongside Metroid). Some of these games TRULY aren't what they were cracked up to be (some of the Nintendo Black Box games, like Volleyball) but a lot of them have been treated unkindly by history, and that's a disservice to them, in many cases. However, just because some games aren't as good as they looked in their heyday, the opposite can be just as true, and games you've had second thoughts about and dislike now have more merit than some would give credit for. Reality is somewhere in between these.

I prefer using the word classic when it comes to old video games rather than using the word retro. Another interesting word that gets thrown around a lot is nostalgia, and if you look up the etymology on that word you’ll have a completely different look on it.

Thanks for backing me up on a recent (and also pointless) argument over the definition of “retro games”! 🤣

The misconception that drives me up a wall is retro games were all hard and we loved hard games. Sure you had your Contras and Castlevanias, but like modern games there were varying degrees of difficulty and I remember just as much groaning about games being too hard back then. And remember Game Genie? Yeah, a lot of us would have taken rechargeable health and checkpoints back then if we could. Retro games aren't any harder by virtue and we didn't accept and enjoy overly hard games either.

As someone who's played retro games on modern TVs and thought they looked fine, I think the issue is less "they're playing the games on a modern TV" and moreso "they're looking at these games through the eyes of a graphics snob"
