Because one lump sum payment would allow you to Invest in a company that can provide monthly dividends instead of one annual payout. One million dollars in At&t shares pays about 70,000 a year.

You would have to be a fool taking a lump sum instead of installments over twenty or so years as the average person dosen't know how to invest their winning and loose the lot after a couple of years
