Biggest Loser Matt Hoover finishes Ironman Triathlon

The Biggest Loser's Matt Hoover competing and finishing the Ford Ironman in Hawaii. An inspiration to all.
There's a saying that goes something along the lines of "The only time you should be looking down on someone is when you're helping them up".
No matter if you're an 8 hour finisher, or somebody like Matt that completed it in just a bit over the cutoff, every TRUE "Ironman" believes this. I don't think anybody on one of those courses would think twice about helping a fellow racer. Whether it be literally helping them up, or cheering them into the finish chute.
I've turned on comment screening, so I have to approve a comment before it shows up. That being said, for the haters out there, don't bother wasting your time trying to post any negative, stupid or spammy comments. They'll never see the light of day.

I think 99% of the people that watch this video share your view on Matt's feat, or understand what true sportsmanship is. The people that spout negative comments about somebody doing something that in most people's eyes they shouldn't be able to just don't have any idea. That's why in my description I mention that I'll delete negative comments. This video has been very inspirational to a lot of folks and it will continue to be. I appreciate your positive comment.

I have it set up to where all comments get held and I have to approve them. I did it that way because there are some extremely hateful people out there that leave very very nasty comments. So instead of giving them a platform to spew their hate, I hold all comments and approve pretty much everything. Even the stuff that's sort of critical of Matt's accomplishments. It's the super negative stuff that won't see the light of day. Which is why I said to not even bother, but those disgusting and hateful people can't be bothered to read that and just have at it anyway.

I am only seeing this video now and I must say I haven't been so inspired in a long time! Thank you so much for this, for giving people hope and igniting determination that is sometimes lost when things don't go the way we planned. You brought me to tears and even though I didn't do an ironman I can totally relate. I ran an ultra marathon and also just missed the cut-off but I crossed the finish line when everyone said I will never make it and I'll get injured so I shouldn't even try, especially after going through physio from a knee injury 5 months prior. Sometimes there are things you know you just need to do for yourself and you just gave me so much inspiration. I wish you all the best in life!

He's called the "Biggest Loser" because he was on a game show where the object was for people to go and lose weight to get healthy. The person at the end of the show who had lost the most was given the title of "The Biggest Loser", as in they had lost the most. I'm sure that the title of the show was cleverly selected on purpose because people generally don't consider the term "loser" something positive. Clever marketing on the show producers' part.

Here is 3 of my feel good stories from last year: i ran my very first 10km race (i ran previous 5km races several years before that), i did it in 1:41:38, 200 metres from the finish line i collapsed from heat, (nothing like what this guy ran thru but it was 28 degrees outside) i got up before the medics showed up, they asked if i was ok, i told them it was just cramps, it really wasnt, i had heat stroke, 2 police officers walked over to me as well to see if i was ok, said the same thing to them, then of the officers asked me if i would like it if he ran with me to the finish line, my words to the officer was, if you can keep up go right ahead, i never looked back to see if he was with me, as i just took off, when i crossed that finish line i just collapsed again, breathing heavily and not sweating eyes closed, they took my external temperature at just under 104 degrees, they rushed me to the medic tent, where they laid me in a stretcher and put bags of ice around me to cool me off, it took them 2.5 hours to get my temperature back to normal, they told me 10 minutes before it was normal, that if its not normal in 10 minutes that they are sending me to the hospital by ambulance, well thankfully i got lucky in the next 10 minutes and didnt need to go and got to go home. about 3 weeks after my 1st 10km race, i ran my 2nd 10km race, this time it wasnt flat like the first one, it was called my citys fastest 10km race, as it was 90% downhill, about 5.5 km into my race running down the road heading into downtown (last hill of the race) i kicked my legs out from underneath me, i face planted in the middle of the street, i looked down at my legs as i was in severe pain, under one of my knee braces i noticed my knee was out of place, there was no one nearby to get for help, i didnt have my phone, and the water station was about 500 metres from me but they couldnt see me, so stupidly i popped my knee back in myself, gave myself a minute stood up, and finished the rest of the 4.5km of the race, i finished this race in 1:20:03 even with a bad knee, beating the hell out of my PB. i never went into emergency room until late that night, i thought i was fine, until i started walking up the stairs, then my knee just gave out and even more severe pain ensued. i got lucky the doctor told me, both doctors and nurses gave me alot of shit, for finishing that race, but my reply was, it was for the kids, as the race was for Kids Cancer Care, and didnt want to fail the kids, but i was lucky didnt tear anything or break anything, just dislocated, was put in a knee brace for the next 2 months. i ran my first 10km race after that injury in september 2 months after it happened, when i crossed the line i was in tears, literally balling my eyes out, as i just finished my 3rd 10km race after a bad injury like that in 39:07 and coming in 12th place out of 900+ runners. i posted this, because he never gave up, and i feel like i never gave up either, never ran an ironman before but i have biked and swam and ran before and know they are all hard

Every journey, no matter how long, starts with a first step. If you're willing to put in the work, there's nothing you can't do. Even you can do one of these. Baby steps. Carlos Eduardo Cecy Over the course of a marathon or triathlon bigger runners have it harder, more pressure on joints bigger energy requirements. Being overweight or obese is even worse, it is like carrying suit made of sand while your running. So bigger people are always at a disadvantage, but if there is the fight in the dog then the bigger dog can finish too. Well, this is why we never see very large people winning marathons, they are always skinny, no exceptions.

Huge respect for a tremendous effort. Real tenacity to keep on going when it must have been so tempting to stop. A fantastic achievement - well done Here's just something to think about for anyone considering similar from someone who's worked with athletes and knows a little bit about how their minds work (or don't work!). This was a tremendous achievement but was also a large risk for a person who had been through rough times and might have been damaged mentally had they not completed the event. With all due respect to a man who finished the event (excellent!) but he wasn't adequately prepared to get anywhere near his potential. This was a huge long shot that maybe 99 times out of 100 wouldn't have worked out. Now it did and I am so thrilled for him but please follow the example of his tenacity and not his approach to the event. Set your goals and then do the groundwork first. The journey will be every bit as fulfilling and your event just as satisfying. Entering these kinds of events in his kind of shape is a big risk and an unnecessary one since the race will happen every year. Take your time then show the World what you can really do - Good Luck!

I pushed myself beyond mental and physical limits to finish. Thanks Matt for the motivation!! Hope you went back and finished an Ironman.

I think the hero’s of the day are not the super fit fast peeps. You expect them to do well. The true hero’s of the day are Matt and all like him who overcome huge odds against them, pay a huge price, and get it done. In the process they change themselves and influence those around them in a positive way. If Matt can do it, so can we! Yay Matt! Your my hero of the day. Maybe week. Ok, of the month!
