Biggest Ghost Town... Varosha/Famagusta
Please take a look at my other video that shows Ghost Towns in Scandinavia ( Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland ) • Amazing Ghost Towns In... Varosha Info Below
Following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, on 20 July 1974 in response to a Greek-backed coup, the Greek Cypriot Army withdrew its forces to Larnaca. The Turkish Army advanced as far as the Green Line, which is the present day border between the two communities. Just hours before the Turkish Army and the Greek Cypriot Army met in military combat on the streets of Famagusta, the entire population, fearing a massacre, fled. Many refugees fled south to the towns of Paralimni, Deryneia, and Larnaca. Paralimni has since become the modern day capital of the Famagusta province in the Republic of Cyprus.
When the Turkish Army gained control of the area during the invasion, they fenced it off and have since barred admittance to anyone except Turkish military and United Nations personnel. The Annan Plan had provided for the return of Varosha to Greek Cypriot control, but this never happened, as the plan was rejected by Greek Cypriot voters.
The reason why Varosha is abandoned is due to the UN Security Council Resolution 550 (taken in 11 May 1984),[3] which in short states that: "attempts to settle any part of Varosha by people other than its inhabitants as inadmissible". Since TRNC is not allowed to resettle the area and the area is under TRNC control, this situation led to the abandonment of the Varosha district.
Since 1974, entry to the district is forbidden with the exception of the TSK personnel and the students of the girls' dormitory in there.
As no one has inhabited the area and no repairs have been carried out, all of the buildings are slowly falling apart. Nature is reclaiming the area, as metal corrodes, windows break, and plants work their roots into the walls and pavement. Sea turtles have been seen nesting on the deserted beaches. Car dealerships are stocked with vintage 1974 models, and years following the abandonment, people claimed to have seen lightbulbs still burning in the windows of abandoned buildings.

Hey, i'm from Famagusta and i'm actually suprised to find this video. By the way i want to state that last few photos of the town are recent photos form the walled city of famagusta and not from varosha. Thanks :)
My home until 1974. I was there during the invasion. Yes, it is abandoned and guarded. The old part of Famagusta is still occupied, but the Varosha district (where I lived) is abandoned apart from a hotel on the seafront used by the Turkish army. I hope to return one day.

Thaks for the comments and the sentiments. Yes, it's heartbreaking to see it as it is now. It was such a beautiful town. It is now occupied and being used as a political pawn in the ongoing situation surrounding the division of the island. I hope to return one day and see my childhood home. I have lived in England since I was evacuated out of the island during the war

I served with the UN in the buffer zone in Nicosia in Cyprus in 1991. We patrolled the zone 24 hours a day. Most of the buildings were booby trapped but the ones we could get into were very creepy. Especially at night.

Tnt Maar We needed to know the strategic points on the ground and strong points held by the Turkish and Greek forces. We neede to know the limits of the buffer zone and our rules of engagement. We knew that Turkish forces invaded the island. The politics were not my concern. Only maintaining the peace which has been achieved since the invasion.

I hope they will demolish Varosha and make it a green area , can't you see that all those ugly buildings completely buried the coastline with cement ?
This takes me back, use to live in Famagusta in 1972 and left just before the invasion. I would love to go back there and tour the place, would love to see where I use to live there - what it is like now. yeah I know it will be derelict, but would still love to see it. I can remember going to the beach and just playing there yep I was a kid then. getting our Kebabs from the guy who always walked the beach selling them. I can still see him now in my memories. He got to know us very well and always kept some for us. I just wish that the politicians would learn that what they think is right for the people is not always what the people want. My message to the politicians is to bury the hatchet and just let the people have back what is rightfully theirs, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots lived next door to each other and got on together. yes there are those whom would argue but that happens everywhere. So my message is lets get this place back to being populated again and let our children and grandchildren have the fun that we did.

It's nice to see that there is people out there who knows that it wasn't the people's war it was a political war my grandmother always told me that even in the war when Turkish people was shot my the army Greek neighbours of the same street will take them in and protect them and in Turkish streets where the Greeks where getting shot by the army turks will take there Greek neighbours in and protect them we did live happily and yes every one argues it's normal now that we live separately doesn't make us happier

Perfect music for this video........ Who's it by??
What a shame. Looked like this was a very nice place. My neurologist (Cenk Sengun) is from Cyprus and I'm damn fortunate to have such a great doctor. Respect from the United States of America :)
My girlfriends mum an family. Lived ther in 1964, then left sum Time later an its never been mentioned tht this happened. Fascinating to c this.
It's weird if you look at Google Earth the South end of the city, where these pictures were taken, is called the Ghost City. But there is a distinct line where it becomes a modern city to the North with beaches, marinas, shipping etc. Even the ground cover goes from brown and spooky to green and luscious.
Sad, such a waste of what once was a beautiful place to waste. The cathedral itself, Beautiful ..Saw comment on homeless, So True. Thank you for this ..

Well coming to think of it, i have ideas for a horror/post apocalyptic series, which is kind of like silent hill meets 28 days later. the plot involving this guy who finds the hotel he only just checked into deserted which leaves him no choice to defend himself arming himself with anything useful, later meeting a group of survivors (college students on their summer break) hiding out whom he must work with to survive and to eventually head to a safezone with. should get all this stuff written down while its still kept in mind

''The satellite dish has been around since the mid 70's and was used for Space Missions from the USA and the UK - it was not till the mid 80's when the Satellite TV system was revealed, bringing TV from around the glode directly to your TV via the Astra satellite.'' I found that on google so that picture is probably taken shortly after the town was abandon.. because the guards started to remove objects after 74 and those were probably not removed yet. Idk if they are still there or not..
That is spooky!
