I ended up adding EVA foam to 5 SPOTS ON MY CLEWS using contact cement, including: (1) filling the gap between the heel hammock and base with 2 (two) stacked, cemented together, 4mm thick pieces of EVA, then cemented the stack to the metal piece beneath the heel hammock, so the entire heel hammock now rests on EVA foam when clicked in instead of merely being suspended between metal anchors (one of Angry's criticisms in his "review"), (2) filling the 2 small rectangular cavities beneath the toe piece, each with 3 stacked pieces of 4mm thick EVA, (3) cementing a 3mm thick EVA pad under the toe section, (4) cementing a 3mm thick EVA pad under the heel section, and (5) cementing a 3mm pad to the top surface of the heel hammock. I used XTRA SEAL tire repair contact cement (any rubber cement or Barge brand contract cement would also work) and 1 roll each of 3mm and 4mm EVA foam--all from Amazon. My tweaked CLEWS ride as comfortably as any binding, without chatter, dead spots, or vibration, and with no interference with the step-in and release mechanism. I used the thinner, 3mm EVA for the exterior add-ons to toe and heel pieces so I wouldn't run into mounting issues from the screws being too short to accommodate the added thickness.

I would say stepping in takes some getting used to… not sure they were much faster than straps some of the time, but I’m assuming I’ll get faster over time… stepping out is easy enough… I’m happy with them so far

Nice man! I’m glad you’re happy with them! You definitely get quicker getting in and out after you’ve used them for a bit. We’d randomly do races to see how much faster they were vs straps back when we all had different setups. Now other than one guy we all have step ons or CLEW. I will definitely say to the photon boots get even more comfortable over time for sure. I LOVED those boots. I’ve always thought about getting the non step on pair now to go with my CLEW because they were so nice. Maybe once my DCs wear out 🤣

I just purchased these and I have now spent 2 days snowboarding. I originally had flows years ago and then K2 cinch bindings for the last 5 years. The Clew bindings are the first bindings where I never have to mess with the setup after the initial setup. My flows and K2 bindings would require constant tinkering with the straps after different runs. These go in so easy, comfortable and once I set it, I'm done. People do ask you about them, so get used to that.

I grabbed a pair 2nd hand a few months ago. Just had my 3rd day this season on them and man I really don’t get the hate on them. Everybody on the mountain seems to love the idea behind it. I have 2 complaints. 1st being the toe strap likes to move down and it can be tricky to get it on your boot in the right spot. 2nd sometimes i can be tricky to get the 2nd click in but a small hop locks it in perfect every time. I would 100% recommend these to anybody looking to try them, I do not like the price though I would try to find 2nd hand

Nice! Glad to hear you’re liking them!! I think I a lot of people online just hate on them because they’ve never actually tried them or they’re just all going off of “heresay” and sort of jumping on the bandwagon trolling. Anytime someone actually on the mountain has approached me or asked about them, they always seem super pumped on them and have nothing but a positive attitude towards them. I’m not 100% sure if this will fix your toe strap problem but I had it initially. So when you’re mounting your bindings to the board there’s a little red cog piece that basically goes into a slot that has teeth to help hold the toe strap in place and keep it from moving. When I first got mine that piece wasn’t pulled all the way up in that slot and my toe strap definitely moved around more loosely. After I did that they stay in place 99% of the time with the only exception being when I step on them and bump them down. Hopefully that’s all it is, unless somehow the person before you wore those teeth out🤷🏻‍♂️and if that the case maybe you could get a replacement piece. Hopefully that helps.

Buddy of mine has them. We ride the same board with the same angles. I’m rocking the bataleon Astros which is a 400 dollar traditional binding that’s considered to be one the of the best out there. We took a day to alternate boards and got good feel for the differences At the end of the day shredding is just fun. And bindings are third in importance behind boots, then snowboard. But there are limitations you do feel in the clews compared to the Astros or anything other high end traditional strap binding. Especially when going back and forth all day. We came to the conclusion that most of these differences wouldn’t be felt by an average rider. Someone just cruising, not really getting much air, bending their knees just enough and not really buttering and railing turns. 90% of the riders really. Dampening is one of those. You feel way more vibrations with the clews. Just touching the footbeds before riding them it was obvious their dampening tech is not up to par with higher end traditional bindings. I’m hitting bigger sized jumps though so again for most this is a non issue especially with some good insoles. Also if you’re a advanced carver and are really focusing on initiating with the heel or toe of your front foot while driving your knees together to de camber your board, you’re gonna feel a lack of board feel. The base plate is outdated and the newer stuff allows for flex while also delivering power. Just my two cents. Again if you’re cruising your won’t feel any of this

Nice! I will say if I ever went traditional bindings again, bataleon or jones would definitely be the one I’d pick for the dampening as well as the flex they allow. I’ve never gotten to test my clews back to back with another binding, I might have to do that with one of my buddies this season just to see/feel the differences. Before the clew I used unions, burtons, burton step ons and I definitely agree they’re not the most damp binding but they do a solid job and I actually like the bit more feedback I do feel under my feet but I think that’s a personal preference. I’m not saying they’re perfect for every rider but I think most will be insanely happy with them😁 but we are cruising, exploring the mountain, riding trees, the occasional bowl and small drops. They have done everything I needed in my trips Utah and Wyoming so I’ve got no complaints 😁

Daaang! That’s awesome haha. You may have to have a bit more finesse in terms of getting in and out but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work🤷🏻‍♂️I’ve never leaned my highbacks forward all the way, I run them in the middle. Thats the only issue I’ve heard is it can be a bit tricker to get straight in with the max forward lean but it can still be done.

I feel you... but im not walking ANYWHERE with a high back on my boot!

Hey Alex, good review - thank you. I rode the Clew bindings on and off last season and had a consistent problem with the 2-click step in system. I rarely got the 2nd click to engage even when stepping off the chair at the top of groomers. Do you have any advice for getting that second click to engage more consistently?

Hmmm the only times I’ve heard people having issues was if the footbed was maybe off a spot or 2, or the toe strap not quite centered. Other than that the only time I had the issues was in super deep Utah snow🤔

I would like to know about forward lean on CLEW. I do have a lot of forward lean on my Flows and Cartel. Would there be an issue on stepping in with CLEW if i max the forward lean option? Thanks in advance as i am thinking of getting a pair of clew.

So I run mine only about halfway leaned and have 0 issues. I have heard it can be a little trickier when you do have the lean, maxed out. But from the people I have talked to that run it that way they say you can get the first click no problem and then just do a little hop on your heel edge and you’ll get the second one fairly easy.

I have heard it can be a bit trickier to get that second click when you have the forward lean maxed out. I only have my set halfway so I haven’t ran into any issues. Somebody else said on here the other day they loosened the toe strap a click or just hopping on the heel edge one time did the trick

For me once I had the straps perfectly set up and the base plate properly adjusted to my boot, I haven’t ever had an issue

I went back and found it. It is on this video. He said he clicks in as he’s coming off of the chairlift, starts to ride away, and just does a hop on his heels and that gives him the second click.

Clew has my attention, as I'm old and returning to riding after a couple decades.... my old board has a Morrow Engage 3 Step -in setup, but i no longer fit the boots .... my question about clew after watching a few reviews...is there play and movement once strapped in and clicked into the board...i really liked the totally slop free and direct feel of the Morrow setup, which is part of why im looking into step ins a bit more thoroughly before junping in... i may just go with traditional boots and strap bindings... but the clew using normal boots has my attention...

I haven’t noticed any. As long as you have the ratchets nice and snug I can’t feel a difference from traditional strap bindings. The metal cleats bite nice and snug once engaged. Vs say a burton step on where you do have a bit of play in the heal with some heal lift

I'm leaning toward old school stuff for now I think... and some getting in shape so reaching Mt straps isn't as tough.... I'm 41yrs old, jist came back to boarding after over 20yrs break, and out of shape, unless round counts...

And even then to get that you’re looking at a heck of a price tag on those boots. I want to say they were close to $500. Nice! At least you’re getting back at it! And you’ve got all summer to work on flexibility and get it back and ready for next season 😁

Haha nice! Have you gotten to try them yet? It’s definitely a huge time and energy saver. I was a skier for 20 years before I switched to snowboarding so I loved these the second I was able to clip in straight off the lift without stopping

I’ve been running my same bindings and hardware for two years with zero parts, breaking and zero issues ever. For the price the quality seems really great to me.

Also im not the only one not able to get both clicks in. As I mentioned before, Jonathan Buckhouse was honest about it even though he's sponsored by them; and many other people have reported the same issue.

Great bindings. I do have 2nd click in issues which are related to me having the forward lean at max setting ( most forward position ) the way around this i have worked out is to click in getting off the chairlift, ride away, hop up and stomp both heels on to the snow and that usually gets them 2 clicked in 👍

What you just described sounds like an absolutely terrible binding. I'm sure someone is going to get hurt on these death traps if it hasn't already happened. I heard they were shipping the wrong hardware with these at first as well so the screws were stripping and coming out along with the double click system sucking.

Hi, newb here 🙋🏽‍♀️. I got a pair of clew binding and I think as a beginner, they are fantastic. It allows me to pop in and out and also able to use it traditionally. I finally got to mount the bindings and they are great! I was wondering if you guys have any suggestions regarding the high back rubbing on the boa adjustment knob. My DC boots have a double boa knob in the front and by the mid section. The mid section knob rubs against the high back :( causing it to come undone. Any suggestions for this newb is greatly appreciated :)

was lucky enough to get a pair of clews for the season. so far been a blast not having to bend over to deal with strapping in. What I like about them better than Burton's step ons (aside from not needing a specific boot) is they can be used as both traditional bindings or as step ins and what I like about them better than the Nidecker Supermaticis or Flow is if you want a 2nd pair of bindings, you only need to purchase a 200$ base plate, not a whole other pair of bindings

Angry seems to have a personal agenda with CLEW. His review betrays some sort of grudge and doesn't jibe with the experience of people who actually ride them, whether sponsored by CLEW or not (I'm not). I did end up adding EVA foam to 5 spots on my CLEWS for additional dampening and comfort, which has worked very well.

Definitely! That’s why I stopped watching his snowboard reviews. I used to love listening to them. But there’s so much hate and negativity and I feel like it just creates unnecessary division within the snowboard community. Because at the end of the day who cares what gear who is using what works for you might not work for somebody else. But the important thing is everybody’s out on the mountain, doing the same thing and having as much fun as I can.

The 3 issues I’ve heard of is the footbed not being set quite right, the straps being just slightly off on alignment or the toe strap being too tight. Sometimes I do have to do a bit of a hop on my heel to get in, but typically I just step right in

Hopefully it’ll help. I’ve also heard from people it’s more difficult to get that second click with the highbacks leaned all the way. Again worse case scenario a little hop should get them to click in😁

Hopefully it’ll work out alright. My 10.5 fit the medium but I do know some boot brands vary in terms of dimensions. Maybe you can tweak the strap adjustment some as well to see if any positions make them better/worse

Maybe in a few years when they have better dampening and highbackrotation.....

In the newer models, they actually have a much better foam than my original set. That helps with the dampening quite a bit. I’d say it’s just a matter of time before we see Highback rotation, a smaller disc, or more flex in the base

my biggest worry would be going to the lodge and someone stealin them 😂Id rather leave it on all day

This is definitly NOT the most heard complaint about these bindings. Most people complain about either 1: They break easily because it has so many parts/engineered or 2: Issues with clicking in, mostly getting the second click in. Not hating, just stating what Ive seen online and heard from 2 people I know that have them. That being said, it does seem like the majority is very happy with these bindings. Going to try them this season

Nice! Im glad you’re going to try them, I feel like the vast majority of the hate stems from people jumping on the online troll bandwagon, without ever actually giving them a fair shot. This video was made to address the comment I’ve seen and been asked the most over my last year and a half of use with them, or from people saying they’d never try them because of “wearing the highback” I have heard of several people having trouble getting the second click but a lot of times there’s simple fixes for it. If the footbed is not adjusted quite right for your boot size, toe strap not quite in the right position or too tight, or it can be trickier the more highback lean you add as well, I run mine pretty much in the middle setting. I’m not saying it’s these every single time but most of the time it winds up being one of these. Only in deeper snow have I had an issue with it, the rest of the time I’ve used them I’ve never had an issue. Sometimes even a simple hop on your heel will get it right in. And I haven’t actually ever heard of anyone breaking them. Obviously there is more moving parts to them and more mechanisms involved that can break, but so far I’ve never heard of them breaking or failing.

My best tip when you do try them is when you’re coming out, make sure to keep your weight on your heel. A lot of times people will think that they’re stuck and pull really hard on the red lever, but this is a safety feature designed to keep your release from being pulled at the wrong time and your board from falling, so when you come to a stop or need to get out, weight your heel and it comes out seamless every time 😁

They’re not the most damp but I don’t think it’s bad. They’re still a super comfortable binding. I think with the right boots they’re just fine. I’ve never had any foot pain, or discomfort riding all day. And I don’t run insoles in my snowboard boots either.

He mentioned you/shat on you by name as well, what do you think of his complaints and video in general?

The Nidecker Supermatics do the same, minus the dork factor. And as an added bonus, with the Supermatics, I don't need to carry a pocket full of tools to do any on mountain adjustments. I would like to try them for a day just to see how they compare, but just from watching how they work, they don’t look as smooth or easy to get in and out of as these are. I know they’re also about a pound heavier, but I would like to try them just to be able to accurately compare the two.

Its very true most of the people online mocking the Clews have no Clew how they work...see what I did there. But really they are a two in one binding, you can use them as traditional or use them as quick release style. Also I see many people knocking how much they weigh, they are literally one more pound than the Burton step ins. I have used mine now about 5 different sessions and they are very slick and love how fast I can get going after unloading from the chair.

100% haha and I caught that🤣. I think everybody immediately jumps on the online trolls bandwagon without ever actually testing them out for themselves. And you’re right ya they’re a little heavier but also burtons don’t have the straps and they do have extra hardware on the boot which nobody accounts for. These are only like 2oz heavier than a standard binding. Plus the nideckers are a pound heavier than these🤷🏻‍♂️glad to hear you’re enjoying them😁🙌🏻

They have issues with quality of strap and base plate screws. Do your research before buying these, they just aren't there yet. If you aren't hard charging and ride just a few times a year, then give them a shot. But don't expect these things to last longterm.

​@@CLGill36 yea i saw a recent video about it but I bought it already. I did notice the screws on the straps are also quite soft. So just have to get the right size screw driver. If it breaks I'll potentially replace the whole ankle strap. Toe strap wise might be tricky since it differs from other brands. Mounting screws aren't that big of an issue to replace. Might just but a set just in case. I think execution of the idea is great but could use some improvement in quality definitely.

At the start of April I will have had these bindings for 2 years. When I filmed this video was at the start of the season before I started my 2nd season riding them. Currently working on editing the review, I’m going to try and finish it up this weekend. Been working a lot of overtime at my actual job so it’s taken me a bit longer to get done than I’d like.

I'm sold. I'm older and errrm...heffter than I used to be, so these look exactly like what I need.

My promo code does take 10% off which brings them down to $450 or $180 for the bases 😅 I mean technically the highback does come with the ankle strap, ratchet and it is a bit more hardware internally where all the mechanisms inside that make it actually function. Whereas the base is just the base, disk and toe strap. I can’t deny it is a pricey investment but I guess they also figure they can discount the bases some because at that point you are already invested in the company and using their bindings.🤷🏻‍♂️ I think it’s worth the price but to each their own. Plus each binding is also handmade.

I don’t think so, I mean if you’re going to use the product, that way any other sets you buy for your other snowboards is significantly less. And again I don’t know that for fact, that was me just shooting in the dark. Like I said also, all the tech is in the high back so I’m assuming that’s why the base portion is cheaper.

If you like them that's fine. But i really don't see that it provides a big difference. Most riders kan stand up and strap in. if your new, yes you have to sit down. Besides providing a minor convenience and saving 10 sec. there's really not much to these. And then there's The price. New riders that these would be great for. Are not spending that much money on a pair of bindings almost 390 euros that's 420 us 🤣🤣

The only problem is price. Clew jacking up the price to $500 outside of Europe and as much as I like them, they aren't worth that kind of money.

I’ve been using my same bindings and hardware for the last two seasons, and they are doing just fine, so it seems like pretty solid material to me🤷🏻‍♂️

Why does the plastic look so cheap on them? they really look like a low end binding for a high end binding price just because it has a latch on the back. Watch the Angry Snowboarders review for a real review on these instead of this guys marketing so he can make money off your purchase.

It’s held up for me for 2 years and feels no different than a burton or union binding. Angry snowboarders was the most biased “review” I’ve ever seen. 1.) you can’t review a product with no footage or actual factual information to back up all these here say “he said she said claims” his facts were “o these bolts look funny, they must be cheap” and again ZERO footage of him ever using them. You can look at any of my videos over the last 2 season and see these bindings being used day in and day out. 2. I do earn small affiliate commission yes. But you know who has more affiliate links/programs than any other KZreadr I’ve seen…angry. I love these bindings, whether or not people chose to use my link Or code is up to them. Makes no difference to me 🤙🏻

Nah it’s not gonna happen. I ate it plenty last season and never had it pop loose. I also had my board dangling in -20 winds in Jackson and it didn’t release. It’s got a safety feature where if your weight is not in the heel of the binding even if the red lever gets pulled it won’t release. I ran burton step ons for 2 years before these, you just get used to the step in system and you’re never worried about it releasing after that 😁

Anybody who tried them knows that you can't get both clicks in with the tiniest bit of snow on the base and with an aggressive forward lean. It's hard to believe that you get both clicks in every time based on my experience.

If you have the forward lean maxed you have to hop to get the second click but I run mine at about half. I’ve taken them all over the place the last 2 years and like I’ve said. Only on powder days did I use the straps instead of stepping in

Any time I’ve talked to anyone who has issues they either didn’t have the footpad setup quit right, bindings straps a little off, or the highback lean maxed out which makes people sometimes have to take a little hop. Hopefully you’re able to figure it out

Those bindings just look so cheaply made & ugly. Think i will stick with my Malavita´s & Union Ultra´s for all day comfort/preformance.

Any rider who has a clew about snowboarding would not have a clew. Supermatics and StepOns are both far superior systems at similar price points. I personally switch between stepon and regular bindings depending on if im riding solo (StepOn) or with a crew, since ill have to wait for everyone anways. From what i gather, the actual biggest drawbacks of Clew are: 1 - bad quality straps. 2 - huge dead spot underfoot from design. 3 - unavailability of spare parts.

I’d like to try the supermatics at some-point just to be able to accurately compare all 3. I ran the burton step ons for 2 years before switching to the CLEW and I prefer the clew out of the 2. Nideckers I haven’t tried but from what I’ve seen in deep snow they can pack full of snow and the step in mechanism won’t work, and then the straps have locks on them so they don’t work quite like traditional straps. And then the burtons I never got them in deep snow but that was always a fear in the back of my mind was if snow got too deep I’d be sort of stuck, but I always wanted to test them in powder just to see how they did. But with the newer step on design I do see a lot of broken toe clips. Again never happened to me with either of my pairs but if that toe clip breaks your out of luck. That being said I loved the way the burtons rode. The clew I just like a bit better and offer me the best of both worlds. Step in speed when I want it, and straps when I need them. I don’t feel like the straps are any less quality than a union strap or burton straps I’d used in the last. And if you need parts for the straps you could just use any other brand parts to get by and for the clew specific parts you are correct you’d have to order them although there are a few shops that have started carrying them in the US. But I don’t know what all they’d have in terms of spares

I've riden all three. They all have their plusses. With regard cost, it is ridiculous to compare the Nideckers and Clews to the Burton system, where you have to buy a binding and boot combo. This is fine if your foot suits the Burton boots and you have a thick wallet. Otherwise, it's a huge expense and possibly throwing your money away. We all know the best boot is the one that fits, so if Burton don't fit, the system isn't for you. And that's before we get into the well documented problems that a truly strapless system can have, regard entry and exit, in compromised situations. The Nideckers and Clews are more versatile, allowing any rider with any boot, to use the system. The Nidecker is better than the Clew, form a standalone binding, performance point of view. Any high end rider, with experience of decent bindings will notice this. However, the Clew is a far better system to use as a step in. Any body trying all three systems will instantly notice that the Clew is easier to enter and exit , than the other two Having riden all three, I'd say that none are perfect and with plenty of really good, traditional bindings available, none are 'nessesary'. They are all diferent and will suit someone. The Nideckers are good for nobody, being an OK binding, that isn't a particularly good step in. I'm not sure who would buy these, or why. The Burtons are good for lazy, Burton fan boys, who don't ride powder and can't be arsed with straps. The Clews are the opposite of the Nideckers, a great step in, but not a top end binding. This will suit people who don't need a top end binding and can't be arsed with straps. It has less of the disadvantages of the other two but also has less of thier benifits, in terms of performance. For me personally, in a pair of Salamon boots that fit and perform better than anything Burton offers, Clews, are the only choice for a step in system. Even forgetting the bad fit of the Burtons, I'm not convinced the performance of the set up was all that. It seemed a bit stiff but without any benifits in precision and control. I suspect that ironically, despite thier poor step-on performance in powder, like many Burton products, the performance issues I noticed, would go unnoticed, in soft snow and deep powder. I can genuinly board better in my Salomons with the Clews, than in the Burton set up. If Clew recognise this and provide the same system, in an upgraded binding, they will be onto a winner but, I suspect they don't have to. Most people who want a top end binding, don't need or want, a step in.😂 Having said all that, I use Salamon Highlander bindings because they give better performance than all three. The closest in terms of performance was the Clews, followed by the Nideckers. The Burtons didn't impress as a step in or in terms of performance.

Clew are the worst bindings. Avoid with your life!!

I’m making a full video addressing angry snowboarders video and gonna try to get it up by the end of the week. Believe me I have been bombarded with comments this morning. I love mine. Two seasons in and not a single issue. I like the way they ride and handle every bit of terrain that I’ve thrown at them. It is a big investment, but definitely worth it if you ever get the chance.

I’m going to do my full 2 year review on them and go through each section very soon. Comment from another video because I want people to know the truth about these bindings: Even Jonathan Buckhouse says what I'm about to say below. If you're getting both clicks every time, document that, make an unedited video showing you getting off the lift and getting both clicks in right away. Do that on a normal ski day with just a little bit of snow in the base. Even the tiniest bit of snow, any kind of snow: slush, fresh snow stuck in the base will prevent the bindings to secure to the base. One click, never 2 clicks.

The ones I’ve made were my choice to make. Like I’ve said I choose to ride these. I’ve ridden them back to back with other bindings and I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything else.
