BIG WAVES and GALE FORCE WINDS mid-ocean | Sailing Florence Ep.164

HAIR RAISING WHITE WATER SAILING. Offshore passages across the north Atlantic Ocean are not easy, depressions frequently sweep across the area bringing gale force winds and steep seas. The forecast was for windy weather, but what we actually got was a gale.

Stunning images! I love Amy's comparison to waves and flames....they both roar! The pictures bring back thousands of memories, some where I had to look up to see the tops of the waves. I grew up aboard my Dad's boat. He was a skipper on his beloved "Sundance" sport fishing in the Pacific Ocean off of Westport Washington; I grew up loving every (sometimes harrowing) moment; love the sea! Of course absolutely no comparison to your remarkable bravery and adventure. I am 71 yrs old so in early days we had charts and bouy bells to follow but only rarely got caught in big seas/fog.I only watch your channel, just can't do anyone else. I'm not sure how I'll manage when you reach home...Thank you.

When I sold my first little sailboat a couple of years ago I cried and felt sad I did things like varnishing I didn’t need to do as she was already sold , but I cared for the boat and wanted to pamper her as I knew we was parting company. I felt guilty selling her like I was cheating on a woman I loved, my real girlfriend didn’t get it but now with our bigger boat she finally does. Yeah so I felt it resonate too during this film I’ll call it a film because of the quality and what about that mood music spot on

I know you can’t hand steer for the majority of a passage like this, but I find that if someone is hand-steering, you can manage the boat to be far flatter and steadier than the wind vane or auto pilot… and the upshot is that the person down stairs can sleep more easily. We try to have someone hand steering on their watch for at least a portion of it when conditions are challenging so that those off watch can get better rest. Just a note from offshore racing where you’re not allowed to use auto-pilot: I rest far better when I’m racing than when I’m cruising, and it’s usually because of the feel of the boat down below when auto is steering. You can tell it can’t anticipate what’s coming.

You should win a award for it!!! Agree with others; best sailing You tube channel. You really captured it!! You both have such a stoic nature! I have sailed briefly in 40 knot winds it is exhausting. Incredible sailing! And Florence just surfs those waves is a thing of beauty. Great camera work capturing those waves. Watching you both deal with the challenges at hand in such a calm and cool way is so inspiring. It can be done and this now you do it. Amazing.

Brave British Sailors, The sound is a bit poor. As I am not a native speaker I have had some troubles in understanding. Wonderful, full of scary movements of Ocean pictures. Amazing pictures of moving water mountains. You are cleaver teachers who explain what is going on. The only effects Amy is talking about, are sounds of roaring Atlantic. Ps. The best cosmetic mask for all Ladies is a rain on the deck of Florence. Amy looks tired, but stunning. Sail Safe, Mother of God stay with Amy and Matt, Saint Mary show them the path to reach home as you are the most beautiful Star of all Sailors, Amen, M.

Hands down my favourite episode so far! As always, the cinematography was just outstanding (as plenty of others have said, no other channel captures sea state the way you guys do), But what I REALLY enjoyed was the story telling in this episode - the multiple sequences where you juxtaposed music, B-roll and Talking Head footage to take us on the physical and emotional journey as the days passed and the winds kept on blowing were truly awesome. This stretch of the North Atlantic is memorable for pretty much anyone who sails it, but you have created something that honours the experience in a way that will keep it fresh years after the intense memories begin to fade. Bravo!

Phenomenal ability to show the power and size of the sea. I’ve not seen any other KZreadr demonstrate this as well as you have in the early shots of this episode.

I’m surprised you didn’t lose your Bimini or any other stationary canvas in the gale. I was once caught mid ocean in a Cat 1 hurricane in a 44’ mid cockpit sloop. It was up to God, enduring 3 days with almost no sleep, and our sea anchor. It cured me of whining to myself about things like three flight delays.
