Big Wave Surfing in Mexico
Ойын-сауық
The Pacific currents dragged us all the way to Punta Zicatela's waves, in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, the Mexican surf capital. We went there to meet Carlos Coco Nogales, one of the best pro surfers in Mexico. At 10, Coco was living on the streets of Mexico City, when he decided to move to Puerto Escondido with one thing on his mind: search for the planet's biggest waves and surf them as if there was no tomorrow.
At 17, he started to appear on international magazines to become one of the best-known surfers in Mexico, specializing in big waves. Coco is a legend in Puerto Escondido, where he has become a mentor for the new generations and an activist in the struggle for the preservation of the beaches in Oaxaca.

5:04 he says "this si your house", subtitles say "this is my house", they failed to translate basic Mexican etiquette
I can't believe there's a VICE video on this. I was litterally JUST surfing there less than 6 weeks ago! Puerto Escondido & Sayulita Mexico! #SoRad
Coming from where I'm from.. I'm from..he made great choices and a path for himself & family...all positive...
Awesome! More series like this please!
I wish i knew how to swim so i child learn how to surf it looks awesome
Coco nogales,,lo conocí en 1990:..... era un niño lleno de ilusiones al que no lo dejaban entrar en la disco ... así que se quedaba afuera a esperarnos... un ejemplo,o de superación... bien echo

Tell me about it! That place is literally my front yard and I was surfing hard in my way to that lifestyle. But for circumstances I moved to the States. And here I am. Still working to coupe with this bullshit. Still hoping to go get back tho.

She is bad dog lord knows id like a night with her. I know him. He helps a lot of poor kids with boards some fixed by Miguel but if one of these kids can grow up to make a decent living out of it it would be life changing for all his family.
You gotta respect the guy for tryin.. ya think. I remember when the place was first discovered and it was called Farrahos ?? 1973 with Richard Casperson from OC. before he was editor for Surfing Mag.. then 2 surfbuddies Pat & Joe drove a 63 VW Bug down there in 74-5 w/ 9'6" guns and sat on the beach watching 20-30' surf that blew their minds! but this is no Brain Conley..
Pinchi trabajo chingon mae!!!
1:14 Nice joint!!
Shallow people bicker amounts each other. Great people work on solutions to better our planet. Great surfer .Love the story , Love you all in Mexico . Wish I could be there now.
Aguascalientes !!!:)
Awesome
Coco nogales ❤️
Alguien me podría decir el soundtrack de este video ?
I've surfed San Felipe B.C. Ensenada B.C. Tijauna B.C. Puerto Vallarta JAL ei Costa Esmeralda Ver. And I've shredded most Southern California's beaches. Ensenada San Miguel best surf
that was great
Surfing looks so fun, but I'd be too afraid to try it. I'm in shape & have alot of endurace, however I'm not a very good swimmer at all & tend to panic if a wave goes over my head.
one wave can change everything!
i don't surf because i don't want a shark to bite my ass.. lol
Anyone know what the intro music is?
I love you puerto...this video brought back so much memories 😭 😭 😭 😭 😔. .THANK YOU VICE APPRECIATED
what is the song of the beginning?
No pudieron entrevistar a "personajes" más ineptos como los peores ejemplos del medio. Y ese branding escondido de cerveza... un verdadero GENIO el creativo detrás de esa obra, aplausos.

The title says big wave surfers in Mexico, not Maui.

Well ***** your right I failed to see that but ***** theirs a reason why their are tons of Laird Hamilton documentaries and not other people is because he's the founding Father of big wave surfing, you can't have a documentary about big wave surging without Laird Hamilton because he freaking started it, yes it's nice seeing a no namer on this documentary but for how big vice magazine is they should have gone with Laird
@scubasteve4053

Why theirs no reason Laird Hamilton and Greg Mcnamara brought it to the next level, people want to see next level shit, let surfer mag do a page on this guy not a vice documentary
@SurfStrands
9 жыл бұрын
"he's the founding Father of big wave surfing" Laird isn't the founding father of big wave surfing. He introduced a jet ski into it. And he's not really a surfer, he's a stand up paddler SUP. There are plenty of people who were riding Waimea at 25-50ft like Greg Noll in the 60's. Not knocking Laird, he's a great waterman, just wanted to correct you on your stance of him being the founding father of big wave surfing.

This is... depressing. What the FUCK am I doing with my life? :|
i remember that picture it was unknown charging mexico awesome to see he is now pro shaka bra
iv surfed mexico
If he's been fixing surfboards for 30 years and says he thinks he's fixed more than 50,000 surfboards then that would me he would have to fix 4.5 surfboards a day which doesn't seem plausible

I think when he says fix he isnt allways putting boards together that are broken in half, he may just be fixing a few dings
As a professional surfer i have a lot of responsibilities, like waking up waxing my board and getting HIGH :D
@KnolltopFarms

He may get paid to surf, but I wouldn't consider him a pro surfer from the footage they show here. I am just a random guy who grew up in Hawaii and I'm pretty sure that I can surf better than this guy does. He charges but has no style and can't even bend his legs to ride the barrel! I had the truck, the skis, and all of the tow-in gear and played that game too until it became a total zoo on Earth. Now I surf secret slabs, hide my gear, and travel like a businessman so that no kooks follow and blow the hard earned privacy I can still find.

Oh yea they've got the BEST Churros for an after surfing snack there made right on the street by this husband and wife but you've gotta watch out for the Sea Urchins. Take it from me; they're brutal the ocean floow is covered in them!
ive swam in california with real big waves. And when those waves come you gotta watch your ass cause they will take you and throw you and theres nothing you can do to stop. Been hurt from it lots and seeing these waves just makes me cringe.
damn
all it takes is one wave...
