Can’t remember the last time I saw such shape and size at Waikiki. As kids(1976) we surfed the flat, calm rolling waves with no one else in the water. It was nighttime; full moon and the lights from the hotels made it some of my most memorable times surfing.

Only during Oama season. (Spawning time for weke or goat fish - pronounced ‘ve-ke.’) We caught a lot of 2-3 foot hammerheads near the Ala Wai yacht harbor entrance just Ewa of Waikiki beach before Ala Moana beach starts. A lot of guys would clean their catch and throw the guts overboard before mooring. Sharks have a toxic chemical stench when you gut them but dry them Chinese-style and broiled over Keawe wood... ono (delicious) stuff. The biggest I ever saw was at Sand Island. That thing swam under my 9’6” Hobie (~1968- last long board I ever had) and must have been over 10’. Again, that was when Oama were running. I panicked, paddled like a motorboat, caught the smallest ripple into the rock breakwater and smashed the nose ... what the hell, short boards were starting to become the rage anyway. The canoe colors, I suspect belong to the Outrigger Canoe Club. I paddled with the Hui Nalu Club once but I guess I was a loner... tennis over baseball; karate over football; skiing over ice hockey...and now golf over anything. Good times. SS396 Chevelle, JFK, hippies and great Hawaiian pakalolo, and Elvis still visited. Vietnam was still going on but ended on the year my conscription number was 15. Thanks for letting me relive the memories. The picture of the full moon and stars over Diamond Head while we sat on our boards at 10pm at the line up at Waikiki is something that stayed with me 50 years and likely till the day I die. Never imagined a video of a canoe ride would get me lost down memory lane.

When I lived in Hawaii as a preteen, my friends and I would body surf. No board. We'd just catch and ride waves using only our bodies. The power of mother nature as she flings you along 12 or more feet high, throws you down like an ant, pummels you, and then tries to drown you. Exhilarating. Absolutely exhilarating.

This is what Captain Cook witnessed in Tahiti that was the first recorded surfing. It was a Tahitian man in an outrigger canoe. Then he saw it again when he went into Hawaii and the Hawaiians were riding outrigger canoes, longboards, shortboats, body boards etc. Cook noted it was purely for recreation although it was more important than that. The polynesians navigated using the stars and swell direction so surfing was used to practice reading swell direction.

This spot is known as "baby Castles". Its not secret. When it breaks, every 10;to 20 years people mistakenly call it "Castles". The real "Castles" breaks quite a bit farther out every 30 to 50 years. But the legendary "Big Castles" (Kalehuawehe) is a once-in-a-century wave which breaks just inside the shipping lane off Diamond Head (Leahi). The last time it was ridden was in 1917 by the legendary Hawaiian surfer and Olympic Gold Medal swimming champion Duke Kahanamoku. Duke ride his traditional Hawaiian 16 foot finless olo board (olo were reserved for ali'i only) from Kalehuawehe, through Public's, Cunha's and Queen's all the way to the beach at Canoe's in Waikiki. ponokeali'i The legendary

Polynesians navigated the Pacific by stars a thousand and more years before Columbus. Imagine crossing 1000+ miles of open water with a mere belief that a land was there to be found. Talk about point of no return! The Pacific is almost twice the size of the Atlantic and these guys crossed it by canoe! ‘Ke ea no ka aina ika pono.”
