Jack actually isn't the sidekick... That's a common misconception. Jack is definitely the main character, and Wang is his sidekick just along for the ride to rescue his hostage girlfriend. Once he gets her back, he's out of the movie. The film starts with Jack driving his truck, and ends with him driving his truck. Because he's the main character...
As a kid bet me and my friends watched this thing a couple hundred times. It was just so unique. Especially at the time of release. Still holds up very well.

Kurt Russell has confirmed that it’s the only action movie where the biggest star is basically the plucky sidekick and not the actual hero. Lol It changes the whole movie when you realized the POV character is only second banana basically. Lol You should do another action comedy with Russell like Tango & Cash.

This is why I felt they should have gone with Shortround as the new Indiana Jones instead of the Shia Lebouf lost son thing. Much more interesting as a name/ title passed on and it makes more sense that he would seek new adventures after Temple of Doom but follow in Indy's footsteps.

One of my favorite all-time movies. “We may be trapped” it’s such a stupid joke, and it gets me every time.
I subscribe to the idea that this film shows the perspective of a sidekick that thinks he's the protagonist. 😄 Jack is the outsider, he doesn't know the situation, he's usually confused and/or lost, and except for a couple occasions, Jack is almost useless in all the fights. Wang and Egg do most of the ass-kicking while Jack is fumbling about or incapacitated. 😄

Jack isn't so much a sidekick as he is an unwilling and reluctant narrator. The audience is experiencing the movie from Jack's perspective, but the movie assumes that Jack would be just as clueless about what's going on as the audience. lol 😂

"Sonnofabitch must pay!" My favorite Kurt Russell quote ever.
9:41 This stunt was done by catapulting the stuntwoman through a breakaway wall -- but initially, the instructions for the wall design were misunderstood, and it did not break away at all. They launched the poor lady straight into a solid wall. She recovered, but Carpenter thinks he lost at least a year of his life, seeing it

I love it! Such a good description and such a fun movie! I remember seeing it in the theater as a kid. Goofy guilty pleasure of a movie. Perfect amount of cheese!
This was originally intended to be a western and Jack Nicholson or Clint Eastwood were considered for the role of Jack Burton, a gunslinger who meets up with a childhood friend, Wang Chi an expert in martial arts and ancient Chinese mysticism where they find out that Lo Pan, an ancient sorcerer, plans on destroying San Francisco but the entire world with a powerful earthquake in 1906. There were talks of a Sequel to the movie with The Rock playing a trucker trying to figure out what happened to Jack Burton and why he disappeared all those years ago, where they then team up to fight off Lo Pan once and for all.
One of my most favourite movies ever. Never get tired of watching this movie.
"What?! Huh?! What'll come out no more?!" lol
I worked at a video rental store in the early 2000's, and my boss would play this on the store TV's AT LEAST 5 times a week! I learned to love it pretty fast 😂
The key to getting the most enjoyment from this film is to realize that Kurt plays a sidekick who thinks he is the main character. A classic! 😎
I'd recommend John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness, which is straight up horror. Dennis Dun (Wang) and Victor Wong (Egg) appear in this as well, along with another Carpenter alum, Donald Pleasence (Halloween), and special appearance by legendary rocker Alice Cooper ("Welcome to My Nightmare").
No other reactor can match Jen for her spontaneous, hilarious comments: at 17:16, "John Carpenter, you are gross."; and at 20:45, "It's a floating goo brain!"
One of my favorite movies. I have several copies in everything from VHS to BluRay. The best part, Kurt is the sidekick.

A great lesser known John Carpenter movie is "Prince of Darkness" also the "The Fog" is a classic. You also have "Christine" and "Escape From New York." John Carpenter is a fantastic director.
The low key twist is Wang is the hero, and Jack is the sidekick
This is one of my favourite films from the '80s, it's got, action, adventure, humour and romance, a great film all around. Please check out 'They Live' which would be a great one to follow this, Jen.
Knowing now that the storms were used as the basis for the raiden character in mortal kombat makes this much more cool.
Escape from New York is another great John Carpenter/Kurt Russell pairing. As far as Carpenter goes, definitely check out Halloween, if you haven’t already seen it. Prince of Darkness is criminally underrated and worth a watch, as well.

Fun fact about that series. I like to pretend that its an extension of Big Trouble in Little China. Because they always mentioned Cleveland and Snake Plisskin.... and that's where the pork chop express was heading. Jack Burton became Snake in the unreleased Escape from Cleveland.
"That is a floating goo brain with eyes" 🤣 Escape from New York should be on the list for more '80s John Carpenter and Kurt Russell fun.
I've just given this a rewatch for you and your channel, Jen. This film is great fun. 😊
Big trouble in little China is such a great movie
was late to the "Premier" but was able to quickly vote in the poll before the ending. I really think you'd enjoy _Tango & Cash_ very much. But usually the best Kurt movies are ones where he has a memorable character like *Wyatt Earp* - *Jack Burton* - *Gabriel Cash* - *Snake Blisken*
It's sometimes easy to forget how extensive a career Kurt Russell has as an actor. He started as a child actor after all, in television. He has a very long relationship with Disney with films beginning with Follow Me, Boys! (with Fred McMurray), and then as a Disney star in The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, Now You See Him, Now You Don't, and The Strongest Man in the World (all as Dexter Riley), all the way to Sky High. And then his relationship with John Carpenter beginning with The Thing, Escape from New York (as the iconic Snake Plisken) and its sequel, Escape From L.A., and this movie. Other Kurt Russell films I'd recommend are Captain Ron, Backdraft, Executive Decision, Tombstone, Tango & Cash, and Stargate.

I absolutely love this film and have watched in many times. I love the fact that really Jack Burton is the sidekick the whole time but following him is a great way to sell a Chinese-American fantasy action movie to a U.S. audience in the 80's.
The story continues in graphic novel form, where they travel to the other side and encounter Lo Pan, who's now doomed to live in the Hell of Those Killed By Idiots xD
Only one word needed to sum this movie up BANANAS 😀 so much fun , random stuff everywhere, great characters with lots of cosplay ideas . Kurt with some fantastic one liners , cool fighting this movie has it all and topped off with your always awesome reaction and outro Jen 🔥it's all in the reflexes 🙂
One of my fav movies. During the summer my dad was in a burn unit (late 80s, I was a kid) this and the Akroyd/Hanks Dragnet played almost everyday on HBO, so I saw them everyday in the hospital lounge, and they kinda hit me as comfort movies.
My parents told me they watched this in the theatre and everyone else walked out because they didn’t understand that it was an action comedy instead of just an action movie. It’s one of my favorite B movies to watch. So many great quotes, and just a great fun ride the whole way through. Loved your reaction as always! Such a great time!

I'm glad you reacted to this! This is such a classic from my childhood, you just have no idea! Now my goal later today is find the streaming movie and watch along with you. 😁 I think the red monster ends up being an uneasy friend/companion to Jack and they go on adventures together. ❤😂
Woo! So glad to see someone discover Big Trouble in Little China! Yass!! Glad you liked it and thanks for looking into it. : ) Another suggestion for the 1987 film w/ Kurt Russell "Overboard" , if you've seen it already than perhaps 1984 "Starman" which I think will be a bit different from what people expect from a film directed by John Carpenter. - And for my random suggestion, which was also suggested by someone in the comments, the 1996 Christmas film "The Long Kiss Goodnight", and if you've seen it the 1984 film "The Last Starfighter". : ) Thanks for reading and enjoy the day. : )
Please react to "The Neverending Story".
Crazy film fact: Kurt Russell was in Forrest Gump. He lent his voice to the Elvis Presley scene. Not the first time he did an Elvis voice. He played him in a tv movie, "Elvis", oddly enough directed by John Carpenter. A year after that, they worked together in a movie called "Escape from New York", which I recommend if you haven't seen it. The next year, they worked together on "The Thing", and then later "Big Trouble in Little China".
And just so you know Kurt Russell AKA Jack is the sidekick in this movie.😁
I was 16 when this came out and I watched it over and over. I used to be able to recite the lines word for word. I still remember most of the lines.
Overboard with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell I think he would like it!
The great thing about this film is that Kurt thinks he's the hero and he's not. Anything with Kim Catrall in it is always a fun watch.
Jen this was my twin brother and my favorite movie growing up. We would rent it constantly at out local video store. VHS days.
This is my favorite bad (campy) movie. I used to have a Windows theme with sounds from this movie. I love everything about this one.
I still watch this movie several times a year-one of the best action comedies ever made. If you get a chance to watch it with the commentary track, John Carpenter and Kurt Russell are adorable and hilarious together.
D'oh!! YT won't let me like 3,000 more times. Kurt has been getting it done on the big and small screens since he was a kid actor. He's done a lot of work with John Carpenter.

A comic book sequel answers what happened with Jack and the monster on the truck at the end.
James Hong as Lo Pan is the one our greatest character actors. He’s in so many movies such as Blade Runner, Chinatown and even Kung Fu Panda. The Jack nerd disguise is a nod to Bruce Lee in Fist of Fury, aka the Chinese Connection.
Expert world-building. Only an hour and a half long, but has enough character, quirk, and back story architecture for ten times that.
0:40 Victor Wong had to travel to Hollywood to film this prologue right after attending the wake for his one Lyon who had been killed by a high school football player in Sacramento who shouted racist and homophobic insults at Lyon and his friends before running up behind Lyon, striking in the side of the head at full speed and knocking him to the pavement fracturing his skull. The prosecutor told the Wong family that, because the killer was a juvenile, he would only get six months. The family went to a popular Bay Area consumer advocate reporter. The reporter was going to do a feature story on the case to gain public support for the Wong family's struggle to get justice for Lyon, but the story was cancelled when the Challenger shuttle exploded, and all news coverage became focused on the national tragedy. I heard about it when I was visiting family in San Francisco, and one of my old friends from high school invited me to see the premiere of "Big Trouble in Little China." He knew Victor and his family from working together in the Asian American Theater Company (back then, it was still the Asian American Theater Workshop), and he mentioned that promoting the movie's release was very hard on Victor because Victor and the rest of the family were still reeling from the psychological trauma of Lyon's pointless and brutal death. Victor suffered his first stroke soon after, and some people believe that the emotional strain from the killing and the subsequent miscarriage of justice in the court case contributed to it.
Lao Pan: Same actor as father in Everything Everywhere All at Once I couldn't believe he was still alive.
Other great John Carpenter classics worth watching IMHO (besides "The Thing" and "Big Trouble in Little China") include "Halloween," "The Fog," "Christine," "They Live," and "Prince of Darkness."

Carpenter has one of those awesome filmographies where there's so much quality over such a variety of movies that even big fans all have different favourites. Basically everything from 1976 (Assault on Precinct 13) to at least 1988 (They Live) is great and worth watching - several movies beyond that are great too, but they do get a bit more divisive.

5:20 - James Hong, an Asian-American actor who has a career spanning almost 70 years. In fact, he's still working at the age of 93! He's also the one playing both the older and younger versions of Lo Pan. The main joke of the movie is that Jack isn't the hero, Wang is the hero, Jack is the sidekick. If you want to see Kurt Russell at his most macho, watch Escape From New York, which is also another John Carpenter movie. It's quite good.
One of my favorite films of all time. I just love how they subvert expectations and Wang is the actual lead hero and Burton is his "sidekick". I heard rumors that The Rock is a big fan of this movie and he's been trying to get a reboot or whatever made. That would be interesting to say the least.
Kurt Russell nailed this part. This is probably what I’ll remember him for hehe such a great character.

I love this movie so much. When I was 12 (92) I would spend almost every weekend at my best friend's house. On Saturdays my buddy, his brother and I would do yard work, and then in the evening his dad would get us some kind of fast food and we'd go to see a movie, or rent one (my parents didn't let me watch movies). One Saturday we found a huge snake in the yard (possibly poisonous?). We told his dad, and he came out of the house in his boxers and wife beater with an axe! He yelled "son of a bitch must pay!", and went and cut the snakes head off. I asked my friend what that was from and he was like "you've never seen Big Trouble in Little China?" In the evening we went to the local burger place and his dad bought us like 25 burgers (the were 50cents a piece at the time)and we rented this movie. I know no one cares, but... thats one of my fondest childhood memories, and connects me to this movie like few others.

Now you are ready for "The Prince of Darkness," another Carpenter gem.
Fun fact. This movie was the inspiration for the game Mortal Kombat.
My understanding is the script started out as the sequel to Buckaroo Banzai: Across The 8th Dimension, and the villain was going to be Hanoi Xan & the World Crime League. When BB flopped in the theaters, the script got reworked into this.
This is and has been one of my most favorite movies. Nonstop action! Total love action manga vibe.
I remember seeing this when I was 6, the part where Thunder blows up scared me at the time.
The other members of the Three Storms are Thunder who is the big one, Rain is the one with long hair, Lighting is the electric one.
Ah, the ending jump scare that gets everyone :D
The biggest joke in this film is that Kurt Russell is the sidekick character, he just doesn't know it. John Carpenter wrote a series of comic books that pick up right after the movie. The monster does not kill Jack Burton, and they actually become friends and a team, kind of like Clint Eastwood and the orangutang, Clyde, in "Every Which Way But Loose" Glad you liked this one, it's one of my all-time favorites and just gets funnier every time you watch it.
