Big Thief - Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You (Official Audio)

Музыка

'Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You' by Big Thief is taken from new album 'Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You', out now via 4AD. Listen to the album here: bigthief.ffm.to/dnwmibiy
Lyrics:
It’s a little bit magic
Like a river of morning geese
In the new warm mountain
Where the storm face forms and speaks
I believe in you
Even when you need to
Recoil
When the topsoil
Is kicking up into the storm
Where the dust goes dancing
And a billion planets are born
I believe in you
Even when you need to
Recoil
Just like that
The moon goes flat
Big lights in the city shine
Crying out
Take me to the limits of your love
There’s a dragon in the phone line
Coughing up a mighty flame
With a tongue of silver
Calling on my oldest name
She says “hey you,
Do you remember me too?”
We were coiling
It’s a little bit magic
Magic
A little bit magic
Magic

I listened to it today when I was sitting in line at a Russian hospital and looked out the window at the trees, and it was a transcendent experience too) I listen to many songs from this album on repeat. It heals me, brings back to myself and gives faith that everything will be fine. Thank you, darling Adrianne.

Children entangle reality and imagination. They blend it together. They find beauty in everything, awe in everything, questions in everything, magic in everything. I appreciate this album so much for being written with the purity of a child’s heart. I believe in you.

I was sitting at work when this song came on through my headphones, as I hadn't heard it in a while I took a moment to sit and appreciate it. Doing so I started to take in the world around me: the towel hanging outside blowing in the wind, the bubbles shooting up from my can of fizzy juice; it was like a form of meditation. Adrianne has spoken about the importance of living truly in our environment, noticing the little things and experiencing them fully in interviews such as her appearance on the needledrop, and I thank her greatly for making music that can take me out of the mundane and help me pick up on the beauty in the world.

Totally agree! It’s such a nice reflection / expansion of that song and album. Imo it has a similar energy to “anything” and “dragon eyes” too, but whereas those were grounded more in details of life (and that album as a whole more specifically reflecting on a relationship that had ended), this song really gives in to its dreamy atmosphere and imagery in a lovely way. I obv can’t say for sure what she wrote this song about, but the song’s sense of calm and acceptance feels to me like looking back on that same relationship / the same ideas of those songs but with a the perspective of more time having passed. Fewer details, but a greater clarity in perspective, without a need for resolution: “I believe in you / even when you need to / recoil.” That really is one of the most poignant and affecting lines on the album for me rn. Resonates very deeply with me, especially in the ways that love and connection are fragile yet enduring things.

Absolutely gorgeous version and a good choice for the album. For any member of the band who might read this, I've seen a live version of this song that had a grittier riff/groove to it that was played at shows last Fall, which was great as well. Any plans to release that version at some point? Or is there even a studio take of that version? Love both equally, so just wondering. Thanks :-)
