Segestria florentina....commonly known as the green fang tube web spider. Being seen more in the south east of England, gradually populating other areas of Britain. Its bite is said to vary from a bee sting to being stabbed. I found one about 2 years ago and as I do love a spider, I picked it up, looked it up and then put it down again very quickly.

Spiders are brave little creatures, they will take on insects much bigger than themselves as well, keeping them out of our homes. Many native spiders prey on houseflies, which can spread several potentially dangerous diseases, and other common house pests ants, moths, weevils, silverfish, woodlice as well. @@lofton9959 I've got brown recluses and black widows, though I've never actually seen the latter in the house. I usually catch them and dump them outside far away from the house--the fewer around for my cat to play kickball with, the better. (I'm not kidding--I found her batting around a good-sized recluse once. It's a miracle it didn't bite her) They're actually more afraid of you than you are them, and prefer to run and hide when confronted. They only bite when they feel they can't escape--a lot of bites happen because one was hiding inside an article of clothing that wasn't checked before being put on, trapping the spider against the wearer.

Some facts about our spider friends: Spiders are nature's pest controllers, they help keep disease spreading flies in check and out of our homes. A spider in the kitchen is your best buddy!. Spiders are vitally important in most natural ecosystems. They control insects which would otherwise overpopulate and cause harm. Many food chains would collapse without spiders. Most spiders are not harmful to humans unless you are unfortunate enough to be allergic to their venom in the same way some people are allergic to bees, this allergy is still pretty rare though. Even if you are unfortunate enough to be allergic, this is not down to the potency of the venom, it is your body's response to it, big difference. That fault is with the human immune system, not the spider's venom. Even the most venomous spiders pose little risk to humans if you respect their space and are aware of them when carrying out DIY work or leaving shoes in areas where they can get into them etc. All spiders are venomous, however the majority of spider's venom is not toxic to humans. Even in the worst case and you are bitten by a spider with medically significant venom, deaths are incredibly rare and hospitals in areas with these spiders are well equipped to deal with bites. Why not have a look at jumping spiders to begin with, as someone else suggests?. They are ADORABLE!. Jumping spiders are not usually venomous to humans at all, most of them are no bigger than a 50 pence piece. You can purchase them from some exotic pet suppliers as well, so you could consider getting one as a friend?. Just be sure to get a captive bred, not wild one though. Hope this helps! :) x

If you observe them, you will find them fascinating. Spiders are nature's ultimate engineer and pest controller as well. If you have a good few around your home, you will notice less other insects invading your house, like germy flies, silverfish, woodlice, ants, and fleas. Spiders are a pet owner's friend, as they will feast on fleas. Spiders are also vital in most natural ecosystems for this reason as well. Wasn't so long ago, I think it was Australia, they suffered wide scale flooding, which caused an outbreak of mosquitoes breeding in the flood waters. This species of spider, I forget the name, spun webs in the trees, capturing the majority of the mosquitos and preventing a potential outbreak of Malaria.

@@thewr0ngchild they are likely very shiny and relatively hairless due to the fact they have to be able to slip through their tubes with a bit more ease or at least that's why I think they are often shiny, a lot of spiders that live in burrows/tubes that are very hairy are more prone to their exoskeleton getting chafed on the sides of their burrow/tube

Where do you think it came from? Do you live close to a port that has docks for importing goods? Because I doubt they would travel very far from the point of entry into this country. Unless it was an escaped pet. It must have been a one off, because I doubt it would be able to find a mate to breed with, unless somehow a female somehow got loose in this country and arrived already gravid, then I guess a small colony could possibly survive, because I think you find Black Widow spiders in many different climates in America. Everywhere from Mexico up to Canada, so milder weather would probably not be too much of a problem.

@@gutz323 I live about two thirds of a mile or a bit more up a steep hill from a reach of the river Dart, which smallish seagoing yachts do enter, although I am not particularly near any moorings. Not near anywhere where things are imported. One of the neighbours who used to use the car park close to my home did have a van they had used to travel abroad in but chiefly in France. I suspect however that a dangerous criminal, who happened to know I was not usually afraid of spiders may have planted it on the wall besides my back door, in order to try to get rid of me because I had exposed some of his illegal activities. At the time of discovery we were just beginning a cold snap & as where I live, is quite high up& exposed, we do get very hard frosts & snow which lays for several weeks up here when it falls. Thankfully I have not seen another since so I believe it perished in the cold.

Fun hairy fact... When I was around 15-16 me and some friends were stripping an old electric station for its 4 core copper cable and other stuff like brass bolts, lead, and copper conductor. Anyways my m8 Dez shouted me over to have a look at the size of a dead spider he'd found in a small wet patch of ground with a puddle there. He'd fished it out and had put it on a wooden post and man it was probably the biggest ide seen. Anyways me being a bit morbid I decided to get two splinters of wood to see if I could prize apart it's fangs and f--k me running I managed to do so and you could see them, easily capable of piercing human skin especially in a tender soft area. I don't know what spider it was or how long it had been dead but I actually managed with two pieces of splinter to prize it's fangs out and like I say it would have been able to pierce the skin easily. We have false widows that can cause problems with necrosis and things, we also have Adders, we have started to get huge wasps too about an inch and a half long, longer than a £2 coin is wide, I have found them and sent off pictures to people, some say hornets but I don't think so but they must be on steroids the ones I have seen. My point is yes the UK is nothing like Australia or central America or south America or Africa, but there's still things that can harm you and in extreme circumstances even kill.

Heres a fun hairy fact for you, spiders ARE NOT DANGEROUS. Think about it, you are a super alpha mega predator to even the biggest spider, not to mention, the bigger a spider is, the more delicate its body, like a 2 ft fall for a tarantula can be a death sentence. Spiders are beautiful creatures and only the ignorant need fear them..

@@dannythompson1948 what? Spiders are not dangerous? And only the ignorant fear them? You need to find a bit of common sense and stop being a disrespectful idiot towards other people for no other reason than because they fear them. People have a good reason to fear them they can kill you lol. I bet you all the money in the world that you wouldn't hold a Sydney Funnel Web Spider or a Brazilian Wandering Spider in you're hand would, you so why not? Oh yeah that's right fear, fear of being bitten and killed or seriously hurt, so really that makes you one of the ignorants lol, you're words not mine. Just because you may like spiders does not mean that you share you're bed with them does it. Stop being fake, you do fear spiders so stop lying. That's just a regular outdoor spider, even the uk ones can get massive, I usually go outside and start poking them, I sometimes have like maybe 3 or 4 quickly running out to see what's up, and I let them crawl onto my hand and onto my arm, and yes they are very quick, but I am not scared of them, and if I were, that would be very stupid as they would likely fear too and could bite me, so I am obviously highly cautious. Not a Brazilian Black (Grammostola. pulchra). I have one and this is definitely a true spider and not a Tarantula, you can tell by its legs. Tarantulas legs are pretty much the same width all the way down the whole length. True spiders generally get thinner towards the end. This is too fast for a Brazilian black too, and also Tarantulas do not build webs to catch their prey. Brazilian Black's are not cheap either, an adult female (if you can find one which isn't easy) would cost you £150-200+. They aren't as cheap as they used to be. You could buy a 1cm spiderling that would cost about £30, but this species is a notorious slow growers, it would take 2 to 3 years to have a 2 to 3 inch Tarantula, and 7 to 8+ years to have a mature adult. That's why they are so expensive, pet shops or suppliers are not going to grow a Tarantula to sell that takes 7 years to reach adulthood.
