‘Big-spending’ budget with cost of living relief promise

Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers has unveiled his federal budget for the next financial year, announcing a budget surplus for the second consecutive time - the first time that's happened since before the Global Financial Crisis in 2008.
It includes a forecast surplus of $9.3 billion (AUD) this financial year, cost of living relief, in the form of tax cuts, and rent and energy subsidies, billions of dollars in local manufacturing investments and an expectation that inflation will return faster to the Reserve Bank target.
