Big rains mean Monster crabs! (Catch, Clean Cook)

Ahoy Fisho's! With the weather still not playing the game, we headed out to test the age old saying: Big rains mean Monster Crabs! My partners in crime for this trip are the Phantom and Shauno, and with the plenty of flood waters still pushing out of the creeks and rivers it was perfect conditions to see if we couldn't track down a few big mud crabs. Needless to say, the trip turned out better than we could have imagined!!! Hope you enjoy the episode Legends!

Wow, I couldn't agree more. Dad and I did all kinds of fishing, hunting and camping together as I grew up. He passed many years ago. I was 15 at that time. I miss him terribly, so very grateful for the many memories of those times we spent together. Dad made those experiences happen. So gentlemen, I'm loving this video. Enjoy these times. As a Dad myself, I've tried to give my daughter some of these same experiences. You can't go wrong!!

When my husband and I lived in Maryland USA, he used a 200 foot trout line with chicken necks and wings tied every 3 ft. He would run the line one way and then the other way. You roll the line next to the boat and use s fish net to bring them into the boat. We crabed for Blue Channel Crabs and could get a bushel in about an hour. Have to steam them in a pot with 1 cup of water, 1 can of beer and 1 cup of vinegar with Old Bay seasoning and rock salt. Can only get old bay online or in Maryland.

Here in UK mammal and poultry baits for crab & lobster are illegal, some risk of bacterial contamination. Stealing from pots,is a risk of serious harm here, you could end up as free floating burley.

My only and usually successful crab pot bait were 2-3 day old aged trout heads in a zip-lock bag. That's because I lived in Alberta, Canada and saved the fish heads from my inland catches on our occasional vacation trips to the Pacific west coast and islands of British Columbia. I only had one crab pot at a time, but went trough three of them from 1974 onwards, each one of them eventually rusting or the netting deteriorating. At best one legal size crab daily, but there were lots of other seafood goodies: mussels, oysters and clams to feed us daily.

Now I want to go crabbing. I use cod carcasses or tuna carcasses the bloodier the better, we collected the blood and guts in small coffee cans when we butchered ours, stuck it all in the freezer, when frozen solid take them to the coast punch a few holes in the can put it in the trap with a carcass, then throw it in the bay. Then go back to the trailer, watch a movie or two or take a nap, fix a pot of tea and read a good book for a few hours, then go down pull the traps, check the catch rebait as necessary. I have a big ice chest that I fill half full with seawater and a couple of five gallon jugs that I take seawater home in, I then dump the keepers in the chest. Change the water the next morning. It makes for a fun overnight trip to the coast and besides the Dungeness crabs are really tasty, we do not have the mud crabs here, but we have the invasive Japanese red rock crabs in some of our bays.

Dip in melted garlic butter....yum yum. As far as catching, fresh fish parts work chicken legs or heart& gizzards.

Well done Guys, a long time ago I learnt to be very careful of a crab that has dropped a claw, I didn't know that the pressure continues after the claw detaches, and it just happened to be around my rod, No Shauno, not that rod, it crushed that fiberglass rod like a hot knife through butter! And it was a jenny, but the claw was still wrapped around my rod, I couldn't throw it back,It was delicious:)

Honestly those will all work for crab . -Fresh chicken backs are cheap and good -Turkey necks work ( makes them crazy ) - old stinky ( raw chicken) attracts everything, snails, stone crab, blue crab and pufferfish I think stinky chicken sends the most. Scent

Blue crabs are a mainstay over here in the states and if you hunt around enough you can find packs of chicken backs on-line.....is a by-product of breaking up a bird and has about 80% of the fat..feet go to China and the rim......competition for wings is fierce......and mass pieces and parts are at the Big box by the 10 lb bag.......we consider that left over fish guts and pieces will work 2 but chicken is the bait of choice
