Baby bison are called "red dogs" because of their orange-red fur when they are born in late March through May. Their hair turns darker brown after a few months, and they develop their shoulder hump and horns. U.S. Department of the Interior 15 Facts About Our National Mammal: The American Bison - DOI.gov 5. What's a “red dog”? It's a baby bison. Bison calves tend to be born from late March through May and are orange-red in color, earning them the nickname “red dogs.” After a few months, their hair starts to change to dark brown and their characteristic shoulder hump and horns begin to grow. Bison calves are the first young animals to appear, and they can follow their mothers within two hours of birth. They start eating grass at one month, and nurse for nine months. Here are some other facts about bison: Size: Female bison can weigh up to 1,000 pounds, while bulls can weigh up to 2,000 pounds. Lifespan: A wild bison can live up to 25 years. Speed: Bison can run faster than horses. Horns: Both male and female bison grow horns. Snow removal: Bison can use their heads to "plow snow". Yellowstone is the only place in the lower 48 where bison have lived continuously since prehistoric times. Generative AI is experimental. What's a “red dog”? It's a baby bison. Hello. I was just wondering if you could do a video on the herd you keep for the meat processing. Where you keep them, at what age they are ready to be processed etc. I'm not meaning for you to show us the animals being process, just the before and after if that would be the best way of wording it. I understand some viewers might not like it, but it's all part of your business and part of life. I'm from Northern Ireland in the UK and love your channel as I was brought up around cattle but obviously we don't have bison here. Thanks Steven.

Super video! What a head increase you are having this year. You’re going to have to buy more land. Have a great day… be safe! ❤
