▲Helpful tidbits to keep for your record ▼
➤Humectants vs Anti-humectants
●Humectants - products that take moisture from the air and put it in your hair. Often found in our deep conditioners, creams, butters, moisturizers etc.
AVOID products with humectants when it's humid because they take moisture from the air & put it in your hair which causes frizz.
Common humectants:
Glycerin (vegetable & animal)
Propylene glycol
Butylene glycol
Sorbitol
Panthenol vitamin b5
Maltitol
Acetamide MEA
Urea
Hydrolyzed wheat protein
Sodium PCA
Sugar cane
Dipropylene glycol
Hexylene glycol
Triethylene glycol
Caprylyl glycol
Some other ingredients that act as humectants
Mango butter
Agave nectar
Honey
Aloe Vera
Flaxseed
Algae extract
Hydrolyzed collagen
Ceramide complex
Coenzyme q10
●Anti-humectants - products that keep moisture from escaping your hair. Sealers.
Common anti-humectants:
Silicones
Esters
Hydrogenated castor oil
Beeswax
Plant triglycerides - coconut oil, palm oil, olive oil, & shea butter
➤When to use a humectant vs anti humectant?
[Dew points - how much moisture is in the air]
Dew point below 35F = use anti-humectants (to keep moisture from escaping your hair since the air is so dry)
Dew point 35-50F = can use humectants (to attract moisture that's in the air)
Dew point above 60F = use anti-humectants (to keep too much moisture from getting into your hair which causes frizz)

Same! I dont care about definition, its VOLUME that matters to me.
Thanks SO much for these tips! Girl, this heat destroys my 2 hour long, flat-twist out. My hard work goes down the drain every time! LOL I'll have to keep these tips in mind!
I'm just the opposite. I need moisture and love humidity. I live in Phoenix and it's sooooo dry here. I used to live in Hawaii and my hair was so much healthier. I will never complain about humidity lol.
As a Miami native, this information is crucial. Thanks for taking the time to thoroughly explain the concepts and bring these things to attention. Keep slaying hunty

Girl I was in Florida from Chicago during Labor Day weekend and when I came out of the airport... that dry heat was no joke 😝
my favorite video of yours thus far! so informative and easy to follow! thank you!
Very informative! It served as a reminder for me on humidity and natural hair. I need to do more wash & goes next summer. My hair is usually in flat twists/flat twist outs and cornrow braids/cornrow braid outs all year around, and don't do many wash & goes.
Thank you so much!! This is really helpful! I've been going crazy wondering why my curls look amazing one week and horrible the next when I'm doing the same routine and using the same products! Now I know that I need to pay attention to the dew point, not just the humidity and temps. You also gave me so much valuable information about humectants and anti-humectants which I did not know about! Thank you so much!!
Amazing information! Thanks for being so gracious with this natural hair knowledge. You are a gift to the natural hair community!
I love that you give a summary in your caption. Thank you!!!! Also, your videos are always so informative. Thank you!!
Love the information provided in the description, I need to print it out and take with me when I go purchase my hair products later this weekend! The humidity this summer has been ailing my hair! Now I will be bettered equipped, thank you for the video/info!
I'm in southern Maryland and here, we're super close to DC and both DC and southern Maryland are surrounded by huge bodies of WATER and it's super humid in the summer! 😭😭😭 This was extremely helpful. Much love. ❤️
I learned so much from this video. Very informative. Now I can adjust me and my daughter's regimen so our hair doesn't be so dry and frizzy. But OAN can I just say how naturally beautiful you are and I just love your hair.
This was a great video. You're a natural on film. I mean you can definitely host a show or too. It's so pleasant and comforting to watch you girl. Work hunty!!!
By far the most informative video on YT for natural hair!!
May I just say, you are just a beautiful bundle of joy! Awesome tips that I definitely needed to control the frizz of my natural hair in this humidity. Great video. You rocked it!

Hi Kia. My name is Cleopatra, from Zimbabwe. I have 3b wavy/curly hair. Always dyed it to cover my gray hair. Blow drys were also my go to to keep my hair nice and sleek and decent looking. i have crazy hair, really. Anyway I stopped chemical/henna dyes and embraced my gray hair. I also stopped blow drying my hair. I learnt a lot from the internet on how to embrace my crazy hair. Anyway, it so hard to get product here. Sheamoisture and Cantu are readily available though. However, I find it too heavy in my hair. So I moved mountains to get the Devacurl BLeave in gel and the Aveda Be Curly. My hair reacts well to the Devacurl but its just a ball of frizz with the Aveda. Im really sad because I bought 2 bottles of this product. What you say in your video makes sense but my hair doesnt seem dry. I dont know. Maybe it is! My hair loves cream stylers but Im going to give gel only a bash. It has been extremely hot of late and today the humidity is 23%. It really is trial and error with curly hair, hey? Im just so enough with my hair issues and I have been so tempted to go bald or wear a turban permanently. Anyway, I will let you know how it goes with just gel. The Ecostyler gel is not bad either but i just hate a product-y feel in my hair. Sigh
Ooooooweee, ten thumbs up thank you!
This help a lot 😔😔🙏🏾🙏🏾
What if the dew point is 56 ???
Does this work for 4c blowouts ?
TFS
Keep up the good work!

I'm flying down to NYC this Friday, and I was wondering whether you could tell me any good New York thrift stores because I'm from London and I've been on a journey of trying to find my style through DIY's and thrifting. Hope you can help. Love your channel💗💗💗

Not sure what borough you're staying in but Brooklyn has great thrift stores. Try a store called Out of the Closet in Downtown Brooklyn (it's small but you can almost always find something good). Around the same area you can find Salvation Army and Goodwill but you can also find all over the city. Try to go on their half off days to get even more of a bargain. Another good one is Urban Jungle in Bushwick/Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Hope that helps 😊

Girllll I've done BOMB twist outs and bantu knots but by the time I step outside even if its to get the mail, my hair goes from yours to Jackson 5 Afro. At this point, NOTHING WORKS😩 I'M IN LOUISIANA. SIS, HELP
You are so pretty😍Has anyone ever told you that you look like Kehlani??
Shea Butter is a anti-humectant? Are you sure?
As soon as I figure out how to keep the Panamanian humidity away, I have to move to Kuwait. Better late than never though!
so lower than 30 and higher than 60 anti humectants
Team silicon! My hair loves it and flourishes lol
