Love this series of Engines, my favourite is the D399. You have to be careful of the D379 rear balance gears, that they dont come loose & cause the Camshaft bearings to vibrate loose, moving forward to cover the lube oil holes, causing a seizure, had one of these happen to me in Libya 1998. Scrapped the Block as it ovalled out on the Mains Journals. No Block rework available in the Sahara then. !!!

One of the best engines Cat ever built ! Other brands such as Detroit, were strong, but always in need of maintenance. I worked in the Oilfield for a decade on drilling rigs. The D379 was the workhorse of the industry for many years. Paired or tripled up, could produce massive amounts of pulling power, with little to no maintenance, other than changing oil, filters, and fuel filters etc., very cost efficient.
