An impromptu conversation with Drag Racing Legend "Big Daddy" Don Garlits along with another legend, Bruce Larson, telling a great bench racing story at Dragfest about his Swamp Rat 8 and being asked to run the 426 Hemi. Don can tell a good story.

    I have been a life long fan of drag racing.Always a highlight when i hear a good story from a old pro.I worked for the late Al Swindahl building T/F cars and heard many stories from the old pros.This is a good one.Thx.for posting this.

    that's an awesome story! and yes I have heard many if stories of national trail owner screwing racers. my dad won a couple rounds and made it to the semis. entry fee was like 25$ and the owner hands him 15$ for going 5 rounds. my dad told him to keep the 15$ because he obviously needs the money more than my dad did and that was the last time we went there.

    Don was stuck being conservative! As a roadracer i have played with 1 deg increments and found at least for qualifying 38/39 will make the engine a bit 'freeer', but back to the usual 36 for racing. SBC.
