Coming from a commercial construction contractor in Northeast Ohio, this doesn't necessarily mean this whole thing is over. I've bid on work on this very site that never came to fruition. Each of those those occurrences had plans and blue prints that had already been through several rounds of government approval phases. Nothing was ever built for reasons stemming from funding all the way to the potential developer changing their mind. Above and beyond that, if Cleveland residents can't raise the money, Brookpark residents definitely can't raise the money. Just a crappy scenario all of us fans are all along for the ride in.

The only thing taxpayers should be responsible for is infrastructure up to the property. Just a small % of tax payers go to or can afford tickets. Make the consumers pay for the stadium through ticket prices. These filthy rich owners can set aside 1% of net profits towards future projects. I am glad citizens are voting against this everywhere. These owners make an incredible amount of money each year from TV contracts.

1. The NFL extended the season too far into the winter to sit outside for 3 hours by the lake in dec & jan. 2. PARKING will be so much better in brookpark. The parking cost and cleveland police crowd control plan are both HORRIBLE now.

The weather is part of the experience. I’d be hesitant to vote for a new stadium, and I sure as hell would never vote for a dome.

Sometimes but not always true. The Bills said that even if their new stadium (which they're constructing right now) was a dome, they still wouldn't be able to host a Super Bowl. They don't have the infrastructure like enough hotel rooms.

@@Mrcharles. That's the exception to the norm. They hosted it at MetLife and it was not a memorable Super Bowl at all (unless you're a Seahawks fan since they won it). From how it appeared, it didn't go well. Don't expect it back there anytime soon

Look, the reality is, building these megalithic structures is profitable and there is a whole segment of the engineering/building industries behind it. So build a dome in Brook Park but don't go alllll out. Keep it cost effective with a 20 year life cycle plan. Then Haslem secures the lakefront property and builds low income neighbourhoods with parks and shops while the Browns play at Brook Park. Then 20 years later come back to Lake and build a 40 year building.

I don't see a single additional parking space on the lake. Pay for a ticket and have no place to park? Difficult to get into and get out of! Security? We once brought an association of people to Cleveland for a convention. Two people were robbed in separate holdups and a car stolen. I wouldn't hold another such meeting in Cleveland unless there was adequate protection, parking and ease of travel between venues. If they were actually to build the Brook Park facility you could solve some of those problems. The thing is you would leave out the most important venues in the Cleveland area. It would require a secure travel corridor with a subway to get you where you need to go.The mayor is nuts. Get the job done and do it now. An all weather facility for year round use. Let me tell you what; one of the fastest growing great cities in America is located 143 miles away. They have the tax money, growing work force with new employment opportunities and assets to support a wide range of sports and entertainment facilities. At some point they will exercise the power of their economy and go after the kind sports teams generally available to a city of that stature. If I were the Brown's, Cincinnati or Cleveland, I would be on my way to Columbus right now.

Cincinnati's Paycor stadium opened up just 1 year after the Browns stadium. Cincy's city council wants to put a roof on Paycor. They see. How much Taylor Swift brought in for the 2 nights she was here. They're doing a small, $40 million renovation right now. They're replacing seats and making the main entrance wider. Because 40% of the fans, use that main ticket gate. Keep an eye out for their news this summer. They haven't been transparent, about what all the renovation would be, the cost and etc.

Cincinnati's stadium deal was quite possibly the worst deal ever for a municipality. It was exacerbated when the county was broke but still on the hook for all improvements, while paying the fund deficit on a yearly basis.

Let me tell you right now this WONT happen. Haslam has not purchased this land, he just has a purchase option. He got the purchase option just for leverage. The trend in the NFL is downtown stadiums with districts that tie into the city. The only real exception is large multi-city metro areas like Dallas. The lakefront is a good location, it just needs to be cleaned up and developed. There is really no need for CLE to have a dome, they are not Dallas or Atlanta they are not getting a million super bowls, final fours and CFP games. Currently the browns stadium is not even bad its probably top 15 in the NFL still. We're talking about CLEVELAND here, not Dallas, LA or Chicago. Not every team is going to have a $3bn dome stadium with a district.

Only if you include Akron and Canton markets does Cleveland rank high, and it's still only number 19. The metro Cleveland area is 1.7 million people. That's not even the size of the Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Dallas, Denver, San Fransisco, Miami, or Charlotte WITHOUT their suburbs!!! Cleveland is a shrinking market and has been for 40 years!! Facts!

Who's responsible for building up the surrounding businesses, development, etc? They have a newer stadium already with tons of space around it that was never developed. Why would the new area get developed?

I think what gets lost here is the plans for downtown are mostly upgrades to the area surrounding the stadium, meaning that Haslam would be facilitating the one thing that everyone in this city bitches about and that’s an under utilized lake front. Mayor Bib doesn’t want to commit any money at this point, completely missing the point that this is the last real opportunity to take care of the lake while Haslam throws in the money for a decent upgrade to the existing stadium. It makes sense that is Bib doesn’t want to play ball, then Haslam will commit more money to build a brand new state of the art facility elsewhere and Brookpark will probably just need to help with the additional development on the property. For me, Haslam seems ready to foot the bill for a stadium on his own, but he wants a district to go around it

When they were planning the lakefront stadium, there was talk of a dome, tied to the convention center. A wasted opportunity. Oddly enough, Engle road is currently being resurfaced, directly next to the Brookpark site.

They found that the foundation in the ground was too soft to support a dome stadium, that’s why they’re not moving forward with adding a roof

As much as i’d like to keep the downtown lakefront stadium, it’s a huge waste of space and makes parking hell. I don’t want a new dome stadium, but it would be nice to see cleveland host things year round in their huge stadium.

Since you can't really ban it on a federal level outright. Their would be some major constitutionality problems. They should just make any city who pays for a private sports team's stadium cannot receive federal money for the next 20 years. After all they apparently have plenty of money that they can give to rich owners.

Stadiums should be built to last 30 to 40 years if it’s gunna be used with taxpayer money. Otherwise the owner should just pay the entire thing themselves.

I get the "They want domes" argument. Especially ownership, as they'd have a chance at attracting a Final Four and/or a Super Bowl. Probably some, if not all, fans as they'd be more comfortable than they would be in freezing or extremely hot weather. However, I do think weather is a homefield advantage that can help a team come the playoffs. Seriously, you don't think teams dread going to Green Bay, Buffalo, or Cincinnati in January? Of course they do, and not just because of those teams. The weather in those places is no joke.

The opposite was true as well back in the day, a lot of the Northern teams dreaded going to Tampa Bay, Dallas, Phoenix or Miami due to the heat and humidity. Making every stadium a temperature controlled dome may eliminate the weather problem for fans, but it makes the game boring.

I think what you are seeing is the norm for any football stadium built in the 90’s-pre Cowboy Stadium. The NFL did not know how to build unique revenue grabbing stadiums during that time, and now clubs are racing to catch up. It’s why a place like St Louis has a perfectly fine stadium, but it’s not considered NFL quality anymore. 70k seats and some luxury boxes don’t cut it these days

It's just a place to watch a game. I've been to Jerry's World a bunch of times and the only things I like about it is it has a roof and a huge scoreboard. Other than that these places are similar to some degree. I do hope the browns get a dome, which is needed in northeast Ohio.

Compare the stadiums built in the 90’s to what is built today, and, for the most part, each new stadium is unique and maximizes the ability to suck money out of our wallets

It should be in great shape still, it’s not even 30 fucking years old. I’ve spent the last 14 years trying to run a business in Cleveland in an almost 100 year old building, most homes, apartments, etc. in Cleveland are more than 30 years old, but a football stadium that gets used at most 12 times a year needs to be replaced already? The baseball stadium and basketball arena that were both built 5-10 years before the Browns stadium have been renovated, but there’s been no talk of replacing them period, and both of those teams have been far more successful than the Browns have been. If reasonable renovations to the 25-30 year old publicly funded stadium are unsatisfactory to the ownership, then the multi billionaire owners and their multi millionaire employees can pay for their place of business out of their own pockets like almost everybody else does.

I have never been to it, but have driven by it and it's GORGEOUS. I'm from Buffalo (now living in Cleveland) and the Bills are finally building a new stadium after 51 years. FIFTY ONE. The Brown's stadium is only 25 years old, right? I don't quite get it.

I don't like this move away from the city. I like the Cleveland sports teams playing downtown.

And with that the new Personal Seat License fees will follow.

I don't really understand why the Browns need a new stadium? They only came back into the NFL in 1999 and got a stadium built for them, their current stadium isn't even that old. Where is Brook Park in relation to lake effect snowfall? Is that out of the normal path for that?

Unlike baseball there isn’t one difference in any football stadium when it comes to the dimensions of the playing field ..Only the turf surface and the fans make any difference.. I can tell you prefer an outdoor stadium from your comment. Anyways, there’s a reason why teams want to play indoors(with the exception of the Bills who are building a new outdoor stadium) but most people now want to have an indoor stadium just to get away from bad inclement weather and games wouldn’t get delayed and the game goes on as scheduled with no weather interruptions. Take my word for it, you’ll change your mind and like the new stadium design the Browns will go with. Not only that, it’ll be able to host various events like final 4 for basketball, college football playoffs and bands that are interested in coming to the Cleveland area.

Next to no hotels in the area. The few that are there are very old and very seedy. There is an RTA rail station on Brookpark Rd. There is a bus line on Brookpark Rd.

That is bullshit. I have been to the stadium in December. Yeah it was cold as heck but that is part of the charm and the price you pay for winter games. Have they ever thought of the fact that rail service almost comes up to the door of the Stadium and with the price of air fare and the poor service and the number of Karens that seem to be flying these days, rail travel may be a better deal. Plus the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is just next door and attracts people all year. Put some small football related functions in the glass enclosed wing and give tours of the Stadium and there is another source of revenue. I live near Sr Louis and I and a buddy of mine decided to go to a Monday night game. We left from Springfield IL on a Sunday morniing arriving in Chicago at 1pm, had lunch at Berghfffs, shopped a while and had a few beers and supper before leaving for Cleveland at 6:00 p,m. Got in to Cleveland at 3:00 am and went to the nearby Holiday Inn, Up at 8:00 and had breakfast with some Ram fans, then m friend who was born in Cleveland gave me a tour of the city and took me some places where I could buy some Brown's regalia to wear. We walked all over Cleveland with our Brown's stuff on and people were going nuts honking their horns and waving. It was great. Took a tourof the ROck and Roll Museum. Went back to the hotel bar and all the Rams fans were there, found out we were from the St. Louis Metro area an started buying us drinks. Then to the stadium for a pre game party offered as part of our ticket price. Ate, drank, met some of the OG Browns and went to the garme. Browns lost big, froze my ass off , hot chocolate was over priced. Walked to the train depot at 1:00 a.m and slept on the floor until 3:00 a.m. departure for Chicago and another wait and more food and beer until our train for Springfield was ready to depart. Would I do it again? Hell yeah.
