Big Brother 23 - Season Review

Ойын-сауық

In this video, I review the latest season of Big Brother US, BB23, which was a massive mixed bag of a season that doesn't quite live up to the potential it had at the beginning, but ends up meaning a lot more for out of the game reasons.

I feel it dropped in the middle, and the ending was a decent. Kyland eviction was unreal, and watching Big D literally convince his final 2 to not take him (azah) was fun. But anything from Derek X- Tiffany was boring

@Wild Card Nation I agree, week 5 was also pretty good, but everything else was either boring or downright unsatisfying. For me, the winner Xavier, is pretty mediocre. If the winner had been like Tiffany, or Hannah, the results would be a bit better.

This season has me conflicted too. One hand, loved the cast. The cookout was very historic and did what the Brigade in BB12 wasn’t fully able to do. Use the master plan to get the whole alliance to final 6. However, Big Brother is poised on 2 levy’s of critique. One is social positioning, and the other is individual gameplay. Now, the cookout completely broke the social positioning platform to the game. You had a core group of 6 using the Brigade strategy or the buddy system as I call it to assure that duos would get nominated. And that the members of the cookout would have numbers to be saved. This helps jury management because 4/9 are cookout members and if there’s two cookout members in the final 2, they not only have a substantial amount of jury support. But they guarantee the whole jury to at least vote for one of them. Great strategy for an alliance, but no so much for individuals. This comes down to individual gameplay, which is some of the worst individual gameplay I’ve ever seen in a season. Almost from every single member on this cast. From frenchie, to Derek x, to Kyland, to Tiffany etc. The cause of the cookout was the social catapult for the alliance members. Assuring they control the social dynamic. Yet, 4 out of the 6 never actually benefitted from the alliance. At one point, it was basically handing Xavier or Kyland the $750,000. Derek F and Xavier were the only two that actually gained favor to go farther from the Cookout. The other 4 I believe had a much greater shot if they played their own individual game. Xavier would’ve had a much harder road without the cookout safety net. And Derek F most likely would’ve left much earlier because he was a social threat. The collective minded gameplay chosen by players is something I wouldn’t say is rooted in malice or ill intent. It’s for a genuine cause. But for a once in a lifetime chance at playing this game, and choosing to play against your best interest for that cause is the point where I feel conflicted. Tiffany and Hannah had numerous opportunities to turn on the alliance and keep others safe that weren’t in the cookout that would’ve better positioned themselves on a game level to win. Their social level was already cemented by having a basic majority of the votes and eligibility for power via their alliance. Xavier was the only one that balanced the social positioning to add to his game level positioning and that’s why he won the game. When you have 3-4 people making moves that benefit only you in the long run, you’d run at that opportunity too! I can’t blame Xavier, and can’t knock him as a player. Wasn’t a bad winner, but there have been similar games played and better executed wins. But the most deserving winner did actually win so I can’t complain. All in all, this season is around the same level of enjoyability as Season 16, maybe a notch higher. But there’s like 11 other seasons I’d say are better than this one. So it’s like #12 out of 23 regular seasons for me!

I REALLY liked the cast this year. Probably my favorite cast I've ever seen among all the seasons I've watched. Almost everyone was likeable this year. However, because of this there wasn't really any conflict or unpredictable things that happened. This season felt more of like a family reunion where everyone got along and people agreed together.

@@BGYMix for sure. On an entertainment level, it did have its give and takes. It did feel more too get along and copacetic for a season. It needed more drama. There’s a difference between toxic drama like we saw in 18,19, and 21. Then good drama like what we saw in BB12, and 14. I felt all of the caricatures casted this season went home too early. The casting needs a blend of normal people, with over the top people, and people who like drama. Mix in people who know the game and who doesn’t. I wouldn’t say this cast was a home run, but every player was likable to a point maybe minus Brent.

This was a decent season, but overall the endgame just fell completely flat. The first week was among the most entertaining in BB history, and the early weeks were very interesting. When the cookout final got their feet under them though, the season became super slow and mundane. No matter who won HOH, We knew pretty much knew who was going home every single week before the week even started. Doesn't take away from the strategy, bc it was a very well implemented plan, but it just made it boring to follow. Then once the final 6 came, Tiffany and Hannah go out back-to-back, and we basically knew right there that Xavier won the season. All of that Build-up, just for it to be over as soon as Ky won that Veto. It did serve its purpose and represent something great, but Overall I'd say this was a pretty middling season. Of the "modern era" (S16-23), I'd probably have it below 16, 17 and 20.

I 100% agree. I love the cookout and what they did but it did become a little predictable. Then it became even more predictable when Tiffany and Hannah left. It was also frustrating that they didn't even say they got out Tiffany and Hannah because they are threats they tried to make it seem like they didn't do as much and didn't deserve to be there....when they both deserved it way more than azah and big D.... I feel like if the cookout only stuck together until jury we would have had a more way more interesting end game and we Still would have had our first black winner because they have the jury votes. The only way it goes wrong is if Claire and Dx get closer and take eachother to the finale. Or if Derek F and britni get to final and he wins lol.

  • @dangolden8020

    @dangolden8020

@@juanwashington-cruz2294 Exactly, What the Cookout did was great. However, The fact that they had a cause bringing them together is ironically what made the game kind of boring. We didn't have any of the suspense or build up of "Will this alliance turn on each other?". Even though not all of them liked each other, I never thought for a second that any of them were going to turn on the CO, because of A.) the goal they had, and B.) their perceptions of the backlash they'd face if they did. I think back to when Tiffany came up with the Master plan, her first instinct was to go with her existing power structure of Claire, DX, Kyland, Hannah, Christian etc., which we all would have understood bc it was best for her game. But what she said that stuck out to me was that she didn't "want America to hate her for going against the CO". This perception killed the game, bc it immediately squashed any possibility of self-interested play, which is what makes the show so entertaining. Of course the end result was still great, and I love and respect the mission and importance of having the first black winner, but do I agree if they played their own games once jury hit, we almost certainly still have a black winner anyways.

53:43 Honestly, if we're to see SB back on any season, I'd want it to be a Heroes vs Villains esque season. She would be perfect for that season because she's a very rare archetype for a villain of someone who is like a very soft spoken nerdy female villain. Usually the female villains are like these "seductress" or brash type of villains. She's a bizarre archetype, but she does fit her role as a villain perfectly, and it would be hilarious seeing her grouped in with a bunch of crazy shitstirrers.

I genuinely wanted Tiffany to win because of her overall game/ MASTERPLAN. And I was so angry at how Kyland exited. I know people will think it’s racist that the African Americans got everyone else out but after 22 seasons of no African American winners and you start to understand why they did what they did especially when looking at the blatant racism shown by many of the white players in the past few seasons. I agree that there was SOME racism in past big brother seasons. However, I dont think it was as prevalant as you might think. I remember in BB21 where Micky won and literally the whole BB community was calling him racist, but that has been disproven time and time again. Also, i dont think being racist as a response to prior racism is okay. Two wrongs dont make a right. It just put a bad taste in my mouth that an alliance formed solely based on their race.

Big alliances that dominate too much always wind up getting boring at some point because a big part of the show is the evictions that could go either way the breaking down of those alliances and deals power swinging and backstabbing, even the commercial for feeds says let the backstabbing begin but this year we got almost none. At a certain point, when it was clear that they weren't going to get caught, though there were a number of times it was right under someone's nose, like they almost had it. I just wanted to fast forward to the final seven see if they pull it off or Alyssa wins something last second and finally see them truly draw blood. But even then it managed to be relatively boring. Obviously X and Ky are going to go after Tiffany as if she pulled out the duos thing being hers in a jury interview she wins, aside from the fact she can play and win comps, though they being them wouldn't admit that. Then they get Hannah as she was Tiff's right hand and an outsider in regards to smaller group deals. Then after a disaster of an exit for Kylan we get the world's most boring final three.

The great cast was kind of wasted on this season because no one played for themselves after the midpoint of the game. I think a lot of people will walk away from this season unsatisfied because some of the more popular players outside of the CO went while some of the less popular players in the CO stayed. Even when we got to 6 we immediately lost 2 very popular players from the CO.

I always say the CO is the greatest alliance ever however they are a perfect example of the sum together is far greater than the sums apart. Big D & Azah don't even sniff final 2 or 3, X & Ky were too strong for anyone let as far as they did. Hannah & tiff probably would have had the best shot but I feel at some point people would have seen them as threat from a strategic point of view (there the only 2 I feel probably go out around the same position with or without the CO)

This season is in the top half of seasons for me, mostly due to most Big Brother seasons sucking complete ass imo lmao. The editing of this season was terrible, as was the endgame, but this was the first time in several seasons that we've had a great cast and a rootable dominant alliance. The story of the Cookout is a great plot line and the gameplay throughout the prejury and midgame is intriguing and interesting to watch. It's too bad that the TV edit this season was so poorly done, because I think a well-edited version of this season would be received way better.

If I had to rank this season I’d say it’s in the middle of the pack. I was very interested in a lot of the early boots like Travis and even Brett (even though he was over his head). This was a nice cast which I’d like to see most of this cast back for another season. I think the outcome was very satisfying with Xaviers win. The only complaint I have with this season is that it was so one sided and it seemed like the people I’d get interested in would go quickly like Christian who I was pretty high on the first episode and wished he went a bit farther. I just want one of these seasons that are in the 20s to have 2 sides of the house going back and forth or everyone for them selves. But overall I think this season his mid tier for me. Not season 10 or 6 but way better than season 19 or 9

The cast as people was good but as players a lot of them were lacking. Nobody wanted to make big moves, 2 of the final 3 had no business being there, extremely predictable weeks even if you only watched the show and not the feeds, there was no power shift at all throughout the season and when non-members of the cookout won HOH, they were afraid to target them. I think this season could have been great but if one of the white players assumed that all the black players were in an alliance together, they would have so much negativity surrounding them after what happened in BB21. Overall, this season did not make good TV but it needed to happen. It was only a matter of time before BB got their first black winner and doing it in this fashion was honorable, however it's unfortunate that so many good players never really had the chance to actually play.

The whole final 6 to the end was terrible gameplay and boring and predictable boots. Xavier winning is the only good part of the endgame. The cookout was necessary, but it wasn’t entertaining. The endgame left me satisfied while ya I’m mad Azah and DF made it to F3. But Xavier running it was so fun. While Big D and Azah didn't do that much for the cookout Xavier definitely was the glue that made sure everyone was together and made some decisions for the cookout plus he was the fist in the cookout that had his closest ally outside of the cookout go home aka Christian. It makes me a bit sick to hear someone who doesn't understand the cause that much to continuously bash everything about and wanted the cookout to separate. @@Jakeexmvs Put the history aside for a second and think. Racism is when a group of people are targeted because of their race, typically when they are the minority. BB is a social experiment and we truly saw what that meant this season. When a group of one ethnicity systematically evicts a group of another ethnicity, it is racist; it doesn't matter which group is which. This season, we saw that a group of black people, when given enough numbers, would do the exact thing that groups of white people have done which they get hate for. The social experiment taught us a crucial lesson: an ethnic group will target those who are not part of their group if given the opportunity. It is human nature to stick with similar people to yourself and that's why racism still exists today. In modern society it does not seem racist because black people are a minority, but when scaled down to a level like BB, it shows that if the roles were reversed we would have a similar outcome.

Just look at BBCAN for example, they’ve always been very diverse with their casting that the black people NEVER felt like they had to make an alliance just to even actually succeed in the game. The reason why the black people this season aligned was simply because of the fact that they were pushed in that corner due to the game’s history..they didn’t cause this so to even compare it to the past alliances doesn’t make sense because the reasoning for both aren’t the same.

Funny how POC all went out back to back to back and were put up together on numerous occasions. Did you think anything of that? Probably not bc you’re predictable. Despite there not being many “racially motivated comments” as you say even though there were by a few people like Christmas, Jackson, Jack, etc they isolated the POC and that’s exactly why those casts do not get along while BB23 everyone from the cast are friends and most of them are still hanging out with each other and the finale was 4 days ago..that’s how you know it’s not racism unlike the past seasons.
