Big Black Bear Carving
Ойын-сауық
Todays project is a big four foot black bear carving! Its been awhile since I carved a black bear so I figured it was time to carve one! Being from Maine, we love our black bears up here :)
Bear Figurine link: amzn.to/3ZJ2nZV
(Sometimes the bear is not available, so check back if it's not! This is definitely the most proportionate/detailed figurine for the price. Still expensive for such a tinny bear but it really helps to have a 3D model)

Well done! You have a lot of natural talent. Glad I found your channel. Just getting back into chainsaw carving after about 10yrs. I got burned out doing a ton of roosters and horse heads. Nice Pfeil gouge btw!

Oh I love my gouges!!! And thank you for the kind words! Funny your say that because I’m eager to do both a horse and rooster soon 😂
Really nice work. I'd imaging the self-satisfaction is high. IF I start doing bears I'd have them all over, not sure I could sell one ha, ha, ha. Be well.

Some are very hard to sell, you put so much work into them and sometimes they go too fast and you don’t get much time to appreciate them once they are finished! For now I have to sell everything, but I do keep the misfits around the house 😊
I know guys that have been carving for years that can't do a decent bear like that. You have talent.

That was very interesting. I'd like to try that. I've wanted a big bear statue. I have a place with trees and black bears. I'd like to put up a camera and film how real bears react to bear carvings, if they do.

That would be an interesting experiment! I’m in Maine and we have lots of black bears but I have never seen one around! They have plenty of untouched forest here!
Awesome!

That’s the way to do it, I always tell people to always push forward and not get caught up doing the same thing over and over! Do things a little differently each time, even if it’s the same carving👍🏻

That’s one beautiful bear! You’re extremely talented, that guy looks amazing. I just picked up a smaller, unfinished bear at a flea market. It’s not painted or stained yet. I’m just curious about after you paint these, do you apply a stain like a deck oil or something afterwards on your work? Keep up the great videos. I’m new to your page.
@TayMarie23

So I often apply a timber oil prior to the paint. I do 2-4 coats of oil depending on how much the wood absorbs, then apply my oil based colors over the dried timber oil! If something is already painted then just a spar urethane coat will do the trick! Spar is what I recommend my customers use to seal their carvings with during yearly maintenance.
I think you should do an Indian chief with a full head dress.

There is a video on one I did last year! 😁
Great job TM! Big Hugs to Nami! Curious why you did the wood burning, then painted over top? I was guessing the burning was making the black colour in your previous carves. Does the burning make a nicer texture or finished look? Thanks. Thumbs up everyone 👍👍👍👍👍
@TayMarie23
Жыл бұрын
Burning gets rid of all the fuzzies (aka wood fibers that get all fluffed up from the texturing process). They burn up and leave a much softer and less splintery texture! Burning also helps remove any sap, it’s super flammable so it catches and I let it burn off so it doesn’t wreck the finish later :) hope that helps! Thank you for the support as always 💛
👍👍👊

I really like ur work. I intrested to know how did you develop ur skill so quickly? Did you do small carvings before? Because I see quite a talent in your sculptures
@TayMarie23
Жыл бұрын
I’m totally new to sculpting…especially with wood haha! Did some clay stuff in grade school but that’s the extent of it 😂 I have always been able to see things in 3D rather easily which I think has helped quite a bit! Trust me…there are many many things I can’t do! Never be afraid to make mistakes is my best advice! I have learned the most from the many mistakes I have made along this journey:) I seriously appreciate your kind words!

@@TayMarie23 It's hard to believe there are people like you with natural talent while others like me have to practice practice practice and aspire to ur skill level. Given you have to handle a chainsaw to get to that level. 😀Again you are very talented

Where are you located and how much do you charge for your bear?

I’m in central/northern Maine, larger carvings can be shipped but I don’t recommend it since shipping gets very $$$! My website is www.tmcustomcarvings.com, you will find my email there if you wish to contact me 😊
