Big Bear Eaglet Death, Last Moments
Warning the video is graphic showing the last moments of the Big Bear Eaglet (Cookie) death. His brother Simba, watched and you could tell was concerned. Shadow flies in 3 different times. He stepped on Cookie a couple of times and looked to be covering him up. Mom flies in with a fish and appears to see if Cookie wants any after feeding Simba. It is very sad. Last year an eaglet also died in this nest about the same age. The weather has been very cold and snowy this year and no doubt played a role in why the eaglet died.

I'm heartbroken. I just found out. I've been crying for the last 20 minutes. I watched them since they were born. This is so sad. They were so adorable.
I love this eagle family. It completely broke my heart that little Cookie passed away.
Heartbreaking ...for Shadow as a first time dad I feel so bad for him...This loving family sure didn't deserve such tragedy...The other day I was thinking how lucky this nest is to not be bothered by owls or other birds, pretty peaceful actually...then this happens...God Bless them all. 😔
Cookie had been sick for at least a week from continued cold and wet weather conditions. If humans had added a tarp or whatever, maybe the parents would have freaked out and abandoned the nest, or maybe the Eaglets would have broken a wing when later trying to fledge. It's indeed very sad for everyone to experience the loss of Cookie, and reminds us of the pain of losing others we love. Let's allow the Eagle family to deal with their loss in their own way without us intervening to steal the corpse just to make ourselves feel better. He is a part of the history of their nest. All of us who continue living will experience grief in our lives, but we must embrace the joy whenever possible as Cookie did. Bless all of you who were touched by the life of Cookie. Hug someone, take a break from the cams, and find the strength to keep going. ❤️🦅❤️ SED (sweet Eagle dreams)
They take it out of the nest to band it, take it into a warmer space???, then return it to a nest where cold weather is still a factor...and people say that's not interfering much with nature...if you can't band them in the nest...stop the practice...
RIP sweet baby. Now you can fly above the sun. ((love to those who are so sad about this loss, too))
I still think of Cookie , he is part of that nest, his home - forever.❤
Cookie unknowiingly sacrificed himself for his brother. The night he passed , Cookie was left to the outside of Jackie in the rain. Simba and Cookies usual placement was together between Jackies legs. Jackie would take the blunt of it all like a wet mop. That night Simba unknowingly had the front entry to Jackies belly blocked off to Cookie.
Birds are very sensitive animals to stressful situations. And in this case there were many factors for stress: Very cold weather, abrupt changes in the type of food (Shadow brought a bird to the nest, and a little later brought squirrel),ringing chicks and again bad weather. And all these factors occurred almost all together within 24 hours. These professionals in their field should have postponed the ringing or not at all do it because of the weather situation this year. They only added stress to the birds.
My Husband and I were truly in sadness when we heard Cookies passing... 😢
I'am so sad for the lose of our baby Cookie :'( What is also sad is to watch the way the family deals with the death. Simba was confused & sad for his sibling and yes the P's did appear to try to feed and definitely cover Cookie up with sticks & some fluff. Love you little baby Cookie and will miss you so much. Fly high with the angels and soar high with the eagles little one. <3 :'( <3
A lot of time has passed since the death of Cookie, yet i have never forgotten it, it is always alive in my mind and in my heart. I still feel the same pain of that time for its loss!! My beloved Eaglet, i will not forget you, time will not erase you, you will stay forever be in my heart!! ❤️🐥💔😢
So very very sad, from watching the incubation to hatching, growing, it's just so sad
At this point, no one knows why the Eaglet died. But here is what we DO know: 1. The Eaglet died on a cold morning after a snowfall. 2. The Eaglet died after it was banded by the zookeeper. I would be interested to know how this compares to last year.
Thank you for posting this. Mother Nature is a cruel mistress. And people who think animals have no brains, don,t grieve, feel love, worry, etc., are clueless.
My heart is broken. I've been watching them since they were born. :'(
OMG, I'm a 54 year old man crying my eyes out!
This is so sad but every time I tuned in the bird was sleeping. R.I.P.
I am very saddened of the passing of Cookie. I have watched them since they were born. Nature is so unpredictable . RIP Cookie. Fly above the sky. ;(
Shadow is very stressed out in this footage. At the end he is displaying full blown anxiety with disregard of his actions on his Simba. The poor eagles! May Simba be safe and secure, healthy and strong. Heaven help them in their tree top home.
