    I used to engineer turbine generator shafts. They are designed to shear as he said. I'm not sure why this one wobbles so much, but it must have a very loose spline. The other end of the shaft would be supported by the mating spline that has a bearing. So it won't wobble like that when installed. My guess is the mating part is the locating/centering part, and this side was left loose to allow for part tolerances and mounting misalignment. It might even be rounded such that it works somewhat like a CV joint. The bearings very likely could still be shot. I don't see the shaft moving this much from a bearing though. The other end of the motor shaft would be supported limiting movement and that much on the motor shaft would have the rotor rubbing on the stator. There must be something in the design that purposely allows that movement, or the spline is destroyed.

    They probably didn't have the parts to fix it. Since they would have to remanufacture the starter it would cost a lot of money, especially if they had to fabricate their own components. Its not like they can easily order parts for a jet starter either. Just because the starter spins it doesn't mean it will have the torque to turn over the jet engine.

    There is no excuse for a quote like that even if it needs to have all new windings and bearings. For a motor like that maybe 100 dollars in copper wire at most and 20 dollars for bearings. Even if you go on the more conservative end of their estimate and assume $5000 then the other 4880 is for labour overhead and profit. Even if you assume the person winding it gets 30 an hour and the overhead is 15 and the profit is another 15 so 60 an hour which is quiet high then that’s still 4880 / 60 = 81.3 hours to rewind a motor that an amateur could do in 2 hours with just hand tools. And obviously if a little bit of alcohol fixed it it was not completely shot the lied and probably never even looked inside it.

  • @JacobLeeson-zk1ol

    @JacobLeeson-zk1ol

    Жыл бұрын

    @@JasonMcKee-ow3xyYou don’t need certification as an aircraft mechanic to fix every part on the aircraft. Not even the company that manufactures the motors would have one. There’s nothing special about a starter motor for an aircraft that makes it different than any other starter motor. For a jet engine it may be larger and it might be made out of lighter materials but it’s the same very basic concept. Also a starter motor is not a critical part of it fails nothing bad happens. If it doesn’t work you never take off and if it does you won’t need it for the rest of the flight because the engine will be running or idling. I suppose if the engine stalled you might need to start mid air but most aircraft can glide and land without engine power anyway so still not that critical. And a place that specializes in electric motors would actually be far more qualified to work on it than an aircraft mechanic.

    this dude had a problem, asked the shop for their solution and it didnt fit this guy. he wanted it going. they would rebuild it. with it being a part prettymuch no-one is ever going to have to work on again in that shop that includes the cost of learning about this starter and making/ sourcing parts that would normally be "off the shelf"

    It's a lot more complicated than that. It lives in a hostile environment and has to perform 100%. If that starter gives out before the engine fails to ignite the engine Temps will get too high and the whole thing will melt down into useless scrap. There's a saying with jet engines that starters are (relatively) cheap, and engines are expensive. That's because if the engine won't light before it reaches a critical temperature you cut fuel and keep cranking the starter until it drops below that temp even if it burns out the starter because otherwise you ruin a megabuck plus worth of engine.

    @@velvetypotato711 But have to be lightweight and torquay and withstand high heat and stay in balance once fitted... to do the job proper would cost thousands to ensure it could cool down through at least one hot start

    @XxKrazyKrewxX L yep, especially if it somehow gets back on a plane somehow. Even still they would have to warranty it to original specs and all and to do a rebuild they would be comfortable doing that with 10k sounds right in the ballpark
