Big Aquaponic Greenhouse - Part 6 - PLASTIC COVERING

Ғылым және технология

I'm finally getting some of the plastic covering on the greenhouse. It's just 1 of 36 sections, but at least it's a start!

    Next one you setup might want to add chicken wire to the trench before you back fill as a pest barrier. Nothing like a layer of wire to ruin a moles next meal. Do you need the green house plastic that far down? Could be worth it to just do a sheet of foam insulation covered by plastic between the ground and 12-24 inches up depending on bed types. Less plastic used for the greenhouse overall and you get a higher insulation at the ground so can move plant beds closer to the edge. 12-24 inches sounds small till you think over every section 2-4 feet of expensive material savings can add up fast. That and running the insulation down to the frost line would act as a thermal break slowing loss of heat to the ground inside the greenhouse.

  • @Bigelowbrook

    @Bigelowbrook

    6 жыл бұрын

    I had debated the chicken wire but with the high moisture in the ground, it would only last a few years before it rots. I also considered adding 2" foam in the trench but the cost of the foam (~$1000) and the extra time to carefully bury it wasn't worth the expense vs energy savings (IMO). When I built the dome I did insulate a section of wall. Again with the hoop, there's the added expense of the foam, plus trying to seal up all the cracks from air flow and bugs is another issue. Since the majority of the heat loss is through the upper area, insulating along the base will help, but usually doesn't justify the expense. I went through many calculations before doing this installation. ;-)

    Try some ArmorAll; spray the track then rub some along the length of the plastic formed edges...SLIPPERY! Good luck! One additional suggestion (11:50); position the roll so the plastic comes off the bottom (not the top as shown). Seems like it would feed into the plastic slats easier. :-)

    You're very industrious, great job doing all that on your own! Silicone spray could help lubricate the plastic in the tracks. I know it works well for rubber hoses. Not sure about plastic on plastic, though, but maybe worth a try.

  • @matermark

    Looks like you have a lot of 4ft sections, maybe make a jig to space the channels, then just put the jig in-between the verticals and drill your screws to hold them, then pull your bubble wrap up thru the channels. Everything will be spaced the same. Another thing you can do is insert the bubble wrap into channels on the ground and then fasten the channels to the uprights; you can do every other 4 feet on the ground so you can still get a ladder between verticals to fasten the channels to them. You can use the jig in-between, i.e. do sections 1 & 3 on the ground, then put the jig between them to properly space section 2.

    very nice. what's the uv transparency and insulation value of the bubble wrap? you mentioned its 20y life, this is comparable to etfe foil used as pillows in large scale architectural structures like project eden. some key advantages of etfe are ~30y life, uv transparent and self-cleaning. but requires ultrasonic welding to frames and blowers. - how to bring those benefits down to scale?

    If you install battens on the outside of the frame that run parallel to the purlins then you wouldn't need to worry about getting those ribs exactly 4ft apart. It might cost a bit more in materials but it would save a lot of headache and time. You can then simply screw the track into the battens as you install the plastic.

    Ever thought about putting 8 inch pipe under ground and running the pipe to the end of the green house bring the elbow up just above ground level and cover them with vent's? Then have a fan system circulate air through the vent system? 12 volt cryogenic piston generate's liquid air that fills a condensing coil with air drawn through it for air conditioning with boil off liquid air forced out of air stone in hydroponic water system to chill the water and add oxygen and nitrogen into water. Air is about 72% nitrogen so why not use it to feed your crop's? Got neat heating system's design's and atmospheric water generator system's to make a stand alone green house. Solid state crystal power cell bank's to operate heating and cooling and water pump's for circulation of water. Really neat stuff! Working on orange groves that are fully protected and hydroponic in enclosed green house structure's with light bandit solar system's. 😊👍😀

    So my idea is to have one bow (at the end where you started) secured firm, loosen the bolts on the perlins for the next hoop allowing it to slide a bit then install the plastic, the one side being able to move should allow you to pull it all the way across. once installed pull the loose hoop over to make the plastic tight and secure. rinse and repeat.

    I think I like your idea of digging a trench better than using post hole diggers. I don't have a backhoe attachment on my tractor. I've got lots of rock. I wonder if using a trencher with rock cutting teeth would be easier to keep a consistent depth than renting a mini excavator?

  • @Bigelowbrook

    yeah, post hole diggers are useless when you have rocks unless you have the nice ones like the electric company that has the rock cutting teeth. I trencher might work but I haven't seen how they deal with larger rocks.

    I think I would be afraid that over time things would settle and cause some of the plastic to rip out due to stress. Does the company recommend like spacing 3' and 11.75" instead of 4'? That would give you an 0.25" slop factor for both directions. I don't think a little dip would cause a problem.
