Lyrics
Drip, drip, drip, drip, drip
Drip, drip, drip, drip, drip
Drip, drip, drip, drip
I shouldn't laugh, but I know I'm a failure in your eyes
I know its daft, but I guess I know it deep inside
It feels like we're ready to crack these days, you and I
When it's just the two of us, only the two of us, I could die
You left my heart like an abandoned car
Old and worn and no use at all
But I used to be free
We're gonna separate ourselves tonight
We're always running scared but holding knives
But there's a black chandelier
It's casting shadows and lies
Drip, drip, drip, drip
I'll sit in silence for the rest of my life if you'd like
Dressing our wounds with industrial gloves made of wire
Feel it penetrating the skin, we begin to relax
When it's just the two of us, and a cute little cup of cyanide
You left my heart like an abandoned car
Old and worn and no use at all
But I used to be free
We're gonna separate ourselves tonight
We're always running scared but holding knives
But there's a black chandelier
You left my heart like an abandoned car
Old and worn and no use at all
But I used to be free
We're gonna separate ourselves tonight
We're always running scared but holding knives
But there's a black chandelier
It's casting shadows and lies
We're gonna separate ourselves tonight
We're always running scared but holding knives
But there's a black chandelier

Regardless of what other people are saying about this being over dubbed with the recording, you can see from their playing that they are still probably one of the tightest and most amazing bands around. Mon the biff!

Great mix from the engineer on this one. Simon's vocals aren't auto-tuned here, just mixed really well. However, the live DVD at Wembley was definitely auto-tuned, it's not discreet at all, maybe it was re-dubbed, but something can still be auto-tuned while re-dubbing. Anyway, great performance. I'd like to see Vennart introduced more often.

I hadn't even noticed Vennart had a mic these days. Not surprising they eventually got him to do that, he was Oceansize's lead singer wasn't he. You might be right - I'm not terribly up on my production, so there might have been something else at work. I don't think I've seen another set where the unison in the chorus is quite so clean and in tune. Maybe Vennart's voice helped that too!

Sorry I took so long to reply, didn't even realise that you had! That word at 0:27 is a perfect example of what I was talking about, listen to any acoustic set or whatever and you'll hear that that's just the way Simon signs sometimes. Also there is a 4th voice which possible sings the lower octave at 0:33, but its the voice of Mike Vennart, Biffy's live guitarist who is lurking in the shadows with a mic :L

I think the problem is people read blogs about catching out pitch corrected vocals which say artifacts and noises are dead giveaways. So they hear natural artifacts and wobbles like the second "I" in "I guess I know it deep inside..." and instantly scream autotune without really knowing what they're talking about.

The vocals in this performance were definitely edited. They pitched them and even added parts from the studio version. It's a fact.

the word "that" at around 0:27 was the first one that didn't sound terribly natural. Singers being human will not hold a note in the same way to pitch. Autotune also uses equal temperament, which singers are not inclined to do - which is possibly why the drips sound cleaner and possibly might even have a 4th voice added. I have no idea who's singing the lower octave at 0:33, but they weren't there on Jools. I think the producer may have been a little heavy handed in general here.

  • @Lucjudge12

this is a good performance from Biffy but theres no need for the pitch correction on Simon's voice. Im guessing it was added after.

There's definitely not autotune on this or in any live tracks as far as I'm concerned and judging live and studio vocals for quality is ballix. It sounds to me that there's a slight slap back delay on his vocals which is heard clearly when he's singin after the breakdown and with the wobbling hoarseness in his voice it sounds like an auto tune effect.

A number of people disputing the use of auto-tune, but I think I can hear it. There's some bits that just have that nasal processed quality you get with auto tune, it's not even the movements between the notes - it's the held ones that just don't fluctuate like they should. It's a shame, it loses its charm a bit.

  • @jagclarke

Examples of when you hear it? Simon's always had that kind of nasal sound when he stresses his voice. So are you saying that singers are incapable of holding a note? Isn't that what makes a good singer a good singer...
