Lyndon B. Johnson indeed became the president after the death of JFK in 1963. However, he won the presidential election in 1964. Because he served less than 2 years of JFK's term, LBJ was eligible for a second full term. He decided not to run in 1968 because of health concerns and decreasing support.

Maybe not nursing home time yet, but the presidency is a demanding job. Not all that many people over 80 are still working demanding jobs. There should be no shame in acknowledging when it's time to retire after a long and distinguished career. Especially when there are other Democrats who could potentially garner more support before election day. Please, Mr. President, help select a successor and gracefully ride off into a sunset of relief (so many of us of every party are weary of this Trump-Biden scenario) and accolades from your party.

Well then the democrats need to take the pragmatic approach. The people voting for Trump are already convinced and nothing will change their minds, so it's not worth discussing Trump. What does matter is voter turnout. The people who despise Trump and would vote for a turnip are already also convinced as well, and will vote blue no matter who. But there are a lot of people who just give zero shits about the election because they don't like being forced to vote between two dipshits. Those are the people that need to be enticed to actually go out and vote, and after Biden's debate performance the chance of them coming out is slim to none. They need a new candidate.
