We've gotten to the point that many Americans (mostly Republicans) have thoroughly internalized that taxes = bad. Put aside that taxes also fund the military. We can't even get Republicans (or Sinema) to understand the fundamental unfairness that someone earning $40,000 in a job with a W-2 is paying more of their fair share in taxes than someone who makes whatever *billions* Bezos or Zuckerberg earn through capital gains.

This is what happens when legislators are allowed to have financial stakes in the success of major corporate industries and when wealthy donors can buy off lawmakers with campaign contributions and PAC money. When major, serious, sweeping reforms and social assistance is required, those legislators will cause a deadlock by putting their wallets and positions of power ahead of everything else.

Precisely. Our democratic republic died the day that the Supreme Court ruled for the corporations in the Citizens United case. If it was bad before then, corporate ownership of our government almost as a whole has become a fact visible to all since the Conservative majority on the Court decided against the people in Citizens United

I'm so old now that I still remember when a group of American Doctors came up to Canada in order to try to sink our plan for Universal Health Care. So glad that the government sent them packing. Doctors in Canada actually experienced a marked increase in their earnings when the administration costs for them dropped.

OK, the audience is made up of children.

So glad that Seth has brought the lockdown attic show feel back into the studio. Of all the late night hosts, he nailed it in lockdown and this looser, less formal, sharper Seth is pure joy to watch.

I love watching Seth with captions on, even the captions are mocking him. He tells a joke and it says scattered applause.

I don’t think members of congress should be given money from special interest groups.

It should be a felony for any member of congress to make any money anywhere other than their congressional paycheck. They are public servants and need to be reminded of it on a constant basis.

I agree. I also think there should be term limits and they should not be allowed to vote on their own pay raises, retirement plans and health insurance especially while denying the same to the population. It’s a public service job. We hire them as employees. A day later they’ve gutted our house, flipped it and resold it, giving us 2 weeks notice to vacate and a tent for the back yard, then drive away in our car.

Please stop calling Sinema and Manchin "moderate" or "centrist." When you oppose parts of bills that have over 70% public support, you are clearly neither.

Thank you, Seth, for getting weird with it. Politically, the Dems need to get some things passed while they can before the window of opportunity closes. Then they might have a chance at picking up seats that might let them render bought-and-paid-for weasels like Sinema and Manchin legislatively harmless.

My face hurts from smiling. Seth’s singing and his Bernie impression make me delirious with joy. The after effect of A Closer Look always leaves me with hope for the future. As long as there is funny we will be fine.

This show evolved during the pandemic into the best late show around, hands down. Seriously, please stick to this line, its fantastic.

Nowhere else in the developed world would Sinema and Manchin be described as either moderates or centrists. The notion that Manchin and, say, Ilhan Omar are both in the same party seems laughable to me.

This made me fondly realize that the wasp incident was where the show really started its transformation into the jackal-infested nightmare fugue that it is today.

that "lego brick" at the end had a strong "Are you happy jackals?" undertone and I loved it

Manchin voted to impeach Trump so deep down, he is liked about as much as Liz Cheney if he were to join the R’s. On the other hand , he and Sinema both voted 50% with Trump while ppl like AOC and even Pelosi only did 15%. The R’s are certainly loving that Manchin is too stubborn to have loyalty to the Dems n Biden agenda. In that manner he is a gift to the Right. Id be super surprised if he switched to the R’s, bc I think they would use him, then expect him to pledge allegiance to Trump and make it known he’s a Trump loyalist. Why would Manchin wanna go there n be controlled when he has so much power where he is? He already said if he switched he’d be an Independent but caucus with the Dems. Both him and Sinema are blue dog Dems, hopefully a dying breed.

Say, maybe they weren't bored. Most audience members seem to be laughing less than before, but maybe that has something 2 do with how they're prepped b4 taping. All other late shows have certainly gone back to the audience pandering, probably warm-up work too -- not Seth! Maybe they've just learned that if they make 2 much noise, they're gonna miss jokes. Frankly makes me so happy not everyone just went back 2 the status quo. I love Seth's weird sense of humor... & seeing his facial expressions like when he'll genuinely crack up or hint at correction items. He's got sharp wit. Also love that everything still moves along at a fast clip without all that audience interaction.

I hope they continue to not mind the live audience that much, because these references and throwbacks to the pandemic version of the show are 💯

To have an expectation of politicians to hold themselves to standard above what being human is about, is the uneducated, finger-pointing opinion that lets unmotivated citizens spend more time delving into conspiracy theories and odd interest groups rather than activating their voices to ask for change from the representatives they've got a problem with. There are tonnes of politicians who may or may not be corrupt, but still try to get good work done while accepting that check under the door from time to time. That's what it is to be in a position of power. Human beings are NOT infallible. It's a child's mentality to be butthurt about the fact that reality isn't squeaky clean. Reality hasn't been squeaky clean for eons. Yet here we are in a democracy where some things get done, and some things don't get done. Some ppl take the money and put their morality in their back pockets for later when they need to "point a finger" and some ppl feel more strongly inclined to get things done and keep their morality active and processing. This guy and this lady.....they're cowards. Some ppl are cowards. Call a spade a spade. You can be a coward and still live and breath. I just don't think we can have cowards on the democrats side because the republicans are corporate america zealots, and that kind of worship, that kind of unbridled belief system, requires logic, empathy, compassion and iron-clad vigilance of equal strength and conviction from the other side in order for a dynamic shift towards justice for all versus justice for the owning class of billionaires who've been steadily infiltrating the system of politics for over 60 years and making poor, working-class folk fight eachother instead of fight yacht owners. Honestly, that’s part of the problem, and I don’t see how we settle that problem without a dramatic reshuffling of our political system....which, of course, the corporatists do not want.

Blame Sinema, not Arizona. She's the one that turned on her constituents. Also had McSally won, we won't be talking about this bill at all because not a single Republican thinks helping regular Americans is worthwhile. The real takeaway is doing our best in 2022 to widen our Senate majority to ensure the two attention who--- are irrelevant

I don't know why we don't talk about Sinema more? Manchin at least has the veneer of guarding his seat. She is shamelessly profiting off her seat before going into a peaceful retirement.

@@silverforest4682 interestingly enough she was very much out and about before getting her seat. In fact that’s kind of what got her that. She was an activist that was very much boots on the ground, but then very quickly (and also kind of randomly) completely dropped for the activist sphere.

Larry David did a great job. Yes Seth sounds more like him but Larry sounds somewhat like him and looks like him 🤣

i laughed so hard at "lego brick" oh my god and you KNOW that the audience didn't get it based on the fact that you could hear the crew cracking up in the back

I hope you know, that the dear Evan Hansen jokes had me laughing out loud on my back porch in the middle of the suburban neighborhood where people walk their dogs past my house all morning long.

I think that she's worse than that. Those remarks after 'no one knows where you are in this situation' really got to me. Her answers were so condescending: "I'm in the Senate" and "clearly, I'm in front of the elevator.' She's SO bad, she's one of those words you can't even say out loud anymore.

She won’t answer any questions because she’s hiding something. She is definitely on the take and I wouldn’t be surprised if Manchin was too. He has to know that coal is dead and his conflict of interest is going to dry up no matter what.
