My grandpa has dementia and I would be beyond livid if any of my family members suggested he should be president of the United States. It's elder abuse.

He has had neurological medical checks this year so I assume dementia isn’t medically apparent but maybe his medication for arthritis in his spine ( he walks in very wooden manner) is reason for him loosing his train of thought. Even if this is the case he still needs to step aside . We need to ensure Trump doesn’t win and the sooner he steps aside the better for the new candidate to win floating voters.
They had four years to sort this out! He wasn't going to get any younger. And what do they think he will be like in 2029?! This crisis can be directly blamed on the Democrats. As if a country that size doesn't have a suitable younger candidate - it is absurd.
Biden's gaffes would be funny if it wasn't so scary.

With prisons we literally have the worst of both worlds. You get violent criminals released back into society while also having non serious and non violent offenders having their lives and their families lives destroyed because of one mistake. All the sentencing guidelines are totally out of whack with logic, literally based on medieval theology rather than actual human psychology.

Can Michael please be challenged on using right wing talking points when talking about prisons? Using singular examples of someone reoffending when let out of prison does not trump decades of data and statistics which show the harm to society of our current overuse of the prison system. How would he like it if someone used one off example of an LGBTQ+ pedophile to say that all LGBTQ+ people are pedos? Can we please stick to the facts and not just use emotive examples. It’s not helpful and we get enough of that with mainstream media. I expected more from Novara tbh.

Michael routinely uses right wing talking points from the host chair - devil's advocate is part of the role and the responses give viewers insight for rebuttals in the real world. It would be good to build in more substantial responses on such things though, so points like the ones you raise have more of a chance to become visible.

Came here from the podcast to make a point about the warehousing of people. Warehousing people- people deemed genuinely unfit for work- has been hugely lucrative under the Conservatives. All sorts of marginalised people are warehoused, and as Marxists we should be aware of it and we should move it into the public debate. Homeless people, adults with learning disabilities, migrants, the elderly, prisoners- for a variety of reasons, the Predatory Class can't make use of these people as units of labour, so instead and with the collusion of the state they turn them into assets. These people receive the bare minimum of support they require, not because it's a social good but entirely because they can be processed as assets. And isn't it funny that ideological decisions made by the Conservatives align so closely with the financial interests of Serco, Mitie, G4S? I have no proof, but what if these decisions were taken directly for the benefit of these human-warehousing firms, and the ideology made to fit? Ultimately it doesn't matter whether it's deliberate or not but I have had conversations with people where I say to them, "you feel very strongly that immigration policy doesn't work for you, it absolutely does not work for migrants, but it does work for the companies providing solutions to the so-called problem", and people are often so outraged by the implication that Serco, Mitie and G4S are directing policy that they immediately discount the idea, as if I was talking about baby-eating religious death cults. I mean, am I mad? Am I conspiratorial? Because it really does seem like our biggest problem is that private interests dictate how we respond to challenges for their own benefit?

You most certainly are not mad. You make a very cogent and perceptive suggestion. There's no denying your argument fits the facts. Maybe it's just too unpalatable for most people

21:33 - thank you Aaron for this bit. The POTUS race is not nationwide, it's state-by-state - so *nationwide polling is useless.* The state with the largest population & Electoral College delegation, California, is a solid lock for the Democrats, whoever the candidate is; *California went 2:1 against Trump* both times before. So that right there will throw the nationwide numbers off. *All that matters is what's happening in the "swing states"* and it was gratifying for once to hear someone talk about that.
Wonderful show. Thank you
