presidents have always had extremely broad immunity, nothing has changed.... this ruling makes it harder for the next guy to use the courts against the last guy in a power struggle. (wonder why thats televant all of a sudden?) i can't even list all the horrible things the last presidents did without them deleting my comment... Biden himself was just ruled immune to prosecution from mishandling classified documents for being too scattered and old.. they wanted a special ability to go just after trump and the court said no....big deal

I'm a 35 yo female. I had to go to A&E this weekend. During triage, I was asked if I was pregnant, asked a few other questions and then asked if I was pregnant again. I was called in to get tests done and asked if I could be pregnant. Just to be clear, I said no every time. When I finally got to see a doctor, she asked again if I'm pregnant. Then she asked if I was already a mother. When I said no to that she was like "Oh so are you trying for a baby?". There was far too much focus on why my uterus was going unused and not a lot of focus on why I was so ill. When they came back to me with my test results the first thing they said was "So, you aren't pregnant..". Yeah duh, I've been telling you that all day.. But also, they never mentioned doing a pregnancy test until they gave me the results. Maybe I'm just naive but I assumed all the tests being done on me were trying to pinpoint what was wrong with me. I will never understand why people can't wrap their heads around the fact that not every woman wants to have kids.

My understanding is that there are two main reasons for that (aside from/in addition to the general cultural 'why no baby yet' pressure): 1) being pregnant can cause or worsen all kinds of problems and 2) If you are pregnant, even unknowingly, there are a lot of treatments and even tests that they cannot use or it could harm or kill the fetus (and potentially you). Aside from the understandable desire to not accidentally harm anyone, there's a lot of places where an accidental miscarriage of an unknown pregnancy is going to turn into being charged with performing an abortion nowadays, and that could easily end your career even if you're not in one of the states that'll sentence you to life in prison.

Just as a precaution.” I personally would not care less if they just said they were going to no matter what, but just ask the one time!

If your symptoms are similar symptoms to a woman who might be pregnant or might have complications with pregnancy or a miscarriage or whatever, then yes they're going to ask you those questions. As for the tests, they did do the tests to pinpoint what was wrong with you. Pregnancy was likely just one of many things they tested you for. I know I know, they should just take your word for it that you couldn't possibly be pregnant, but doctors are used to people lying or being uneducated how these things happen and when/whether they're possible.

As a person from the UK, the politics surrounding the conscription proposition is so ridiculous that it's comical. For the last 14 years we have had a Conservative government greedily run our economy into the ground with not even half-baked promises of new and quality housing, giving more funds to the NHS to help stabilize the massive growth in patients that need care, create some sort of better border control to deter illegal immigrants, the fact that people for the last 3/4 generations never being able to afford their own home among many other broken promises that not even one has been fulfilled. For most of us 25-35 year olds that live in the UK I can't see that the conscription would end well, as I know that I would rather be sent to prison than die in a war I had no say in, to live in a house that I will never own for a government that seemingly hates me but still wants to take most of my money in taxes whilst also trying its hardest to kill off the NHS. We are soon due to have a general election and at least from my point of view, the Labour party is putting a tremendous amount of effort more than the Conservatives, most likely because this is the weakest that the Conservatives have ever looked whilst the Labour party isn't proposing a conscription at all. The current Conservative government has tacked on conscription as yet another ridiculous idea to gain more voters, though that's not to say that Labour could very well also tack on conscription once they get into power, but who knows? Me personally, for me to even consider going to war for my country, my caveats are as follows; I want to be able to own my own home, I want to be able to afford basic necessities without worrying that I can't pay my bills, I want to keep the free healthcare that I already have and to ensure that it never get's taken away, I want my taxes to actually fund what they are supposed used to be for and not to fund some greedy tories £500 lunch in the house of commons and most of all... I want free speech in my country, under the same kind of constitution as those in the US.

Regarding compulsory service, I had a drill sargeant in basic that said "a draft is bad, because you don't want to have someone to your left or your right that didn't sign up to be there." This has stuck with me (22 years later), because it was hard enough to be in Afghanistan when I *did* sign up to be there. As service members, we rely heavily on each other for survival and completion our missions. But when you have someone that doesn't want to be there, and are possibly resentful or not serious about their job, they become a huge liability to everyone. And having worked with conscripted forces, it often devolves into babysitting them on missions so that they don't accidentally hurt themselves or others. It's likely that they didn't receive adequate training, and even if they did, they may not have taken it seriously, because they didn't volunteer to be there in the first place.

  • @Kikkarlin

    @Kikkarlin

    2 сағат бұрын

Let's also not forget what we've seen those conscripted prepared to do to avoid going to the front or getting sent back to the front throughout history. Best case scenario, they desert or injure themselves at home to avoid deployment and you have one less person to watch your back. Worst case? They do something stupid in the field to get sent home and risk your team's safety in the process. Heck there are even stories about American soldiers trying to get out of going to Iraq with all kinds of crazy plots (like apparently hiring a hitman to shoot their knee?? two swallowed a pen). And they all volunteered to serve. It is absolutely a terrible idea for everyone involved. It sounds like a good idea to have a huge number of soldiers, but it seems to often come at the cost of quality as you've mentioned. I think we often times forget (especially civilians) that being in the middle of a war as a combatant is like a constant waltz through a minefield. You have to be very well trained, hypervigilant and your team has to work together like you're one entity. It's one of the reasons why war scares me so much. It is hell on earth and we cannot expect huge droves of people to come out on the other side of that in one piece. They just become canon fodder.

As someone who did their mandatory military service in Germany, I can only say that it was a great opportunity. I also think there needs to be some clarification around what the situation was in Germany. You weren't forced to join the military after highschool. You had 3 choices, civil services (elderly care, hospitals, etc.), military service/training, OR if you were accepted into higher education/further education like an apprenticeship you didn't need to participate at all. This means for all of those teens who weren't sure where to go after highschool, there was a paid opportunity to develop new skills and establish good references for your CV because you were guaranteed a position where you could demonstrate your work ethic. I struggle to see who would stand in opposition to this system.

Having a set of guaranteed options for a high school graduate that doesn't already have something lined up makes perfect sense to me, particularly since there are non-military options, but a lot of people will either see it (or have it deliberately reported to them) as a compulsory draft or they'll just throw a fit on principle because you're telling them they have to do something. This is just my 2 cents, not universal truth or anything, but in my opinion/experience America (it's probably true elsewhere as well, but I haven't traveled outside the US much) has a bad case of 'Freedom' addiction, in the sense that being told they have to do just about anything is anathema to them regardless of what the action is or the reason for it. We've also got plenty of politicians who're delighted for any opportunity to scream about how any given thing is 'government overreach' (read: "someone told me 'no' and I didn't like it"). We've got assholes who drive around 'rolling coal' by sabotaging the emissions systems on their cars, purely because they've been told they shouldn't, without any consideration of the consequences.

@@mechalith2791 Exactly why I put a little more context for Germany. Conscription makes for great yellow journalism, but the reality for the west is that the majority of people who do a year mandatory service will never end up in a war. While the system may be different in other countries I would still say if done properly it can be really good at providing direction for young people (I know it helped give me direction). Freedom is a funny word that holds very little actual meaning, and unfortunately, although the US is known for an obsession with it, the obsession is everywhere. Similar to your 'rolling coal' example, if you say "adapt our diet to reduce meat consumption" in Europe the response seems to be "They don't want us eating meat so eat double". Even if you aren't saying go vegan or vegetarian, just suggesting a reduction to less than 3 meals a day, 7 days a week.

@@turinturambar347 I understand your point about the idea not flying in the US. Similar to reducing vehicle size to prevent child death or limiting access to guns is against freedom somehow. I need to point out though that there is no such thing in a functional society as absolute personal freedom. Personal freedom inevitably comes at the expense of others. As such we need to draw the line where we think it is an acceptable loss of personal freedom for the general benefit of society. i.e. taxes to ensure infrastructure doesn't collapse, or no smoking in public buildings, no drinking and driving. This "conscription" service is not much different in that you spend a year providing a service to society in some way (if you aren't already busy with something else) and on the upside you get paid and have guaranteed work.

The answer is pretty simple. Those options were already there for people who sought to pursue them, so why make it mandatory? Why force people to choose right out of highschool to pursue college, a trade, or military service? I'd also make two very important notes 1) The US deploys troops to active warzones or equally dangerous areas FAR more frequently then Germany. I mean they were sending hundreds of thousands of troops to Iraq and Afghanistan only a couple years ago. And that doesn't include other potentially dangerous Middle East or African deployments. Sure MOST US troops will get deployed somewhere safe like western Europe or SK/Japan, but I'd not want to risk the life of my child on a choice they were forced to make based on monetary means. Speaking of which... 2) Higher Education in the US is extremely expensive. In the US, and I do mean specifically the US, if you're forced to make the decision of pursuing a bank-breaking level of costs for an education OR joining the armed forces, what you're really doing is forcing children from poorer families to make that call which I think is pretty morally repugnant.

Ive finally reached a point where i can come to terms with it: The supreme court is fundamentally broken. The supreme court on paper is supposed to be an apolitical, top authority thay determines what the law is. But as it stands now, the court is a right-leaning 6-3 majority that is consistently siding with its own party, and a third of which is appointed by one man, who they all conveniently just agreed is immune to some degree from persecution. Also theyre appointed for life, repeatedly shown to not be impartial, and seem oddly susceptable to bribery. The supreme court is an embarassment to our country, and id say the exact same thing if it was 6 democrats 3 republicans

It’s so unprincipled to try to have rules that are okay for YOUR group but not for others. Our laws and regulations need to work equally for all. But not in the sense of teaching the bible but more in the sense of teaching what it is and how the major western religions came to be from a historical standpoint. But I think that already exists. I remember reading in world history class in school about Abraham and the basis of the three major religions, within the context that all had a major impact on historical affairs. Besides, there's so many kids and teens in the system who aren't adopted or fostered because of their age, disabilities, colour, etc. Forcing people to have kids while not giving a fuck what happens to them post-birth is so villainous.

The university staff were executed by Morocco when it invaded in the 16th century and Mali/Songhai's wealth was built on the trans saharan slave trade and control of gold trade through central Africa. European seizure of naval trade routes along the gold coast basically crippled Mali's power in Africa. But ya there was a backlash against science in the Middle East and North Africa starting in the 15th-16th century. I’m more concerned with why there are adults trying to force people to have babies. I understand the concern of the population growth rate from a social security standpoint and elder support standpoint. Telling women they have to have babies isn’t the solution, though. I’m still in massive medical debt from my last child and I HAVE insurance. I’m still struggling to afford daycare as well. That doesn’t begin to address the dismissive behavior I experienced by medical professionals during and after pregnancy. Until having a baby becomes affordable and safe, pressuring women to have those babies is not acceptable.

I bet at least half of the kids in my high-school weren't religious. There will be so many kids who will refuse to learn anything with the Bible and if this effects grades, then Oklahoma will fall even lower in ranked state school systems. If it becomes a mandatory thing to learn and read the Bible, it arguably infringes on the first ammendment and can lead down a very bad path. You can't make people become something. Unless it is a private Christian self funded school there should be nothing about a Bible brought up in any curriculum. As a Christian would you want to be forced to learn of the Quran in a public school? I am sure that would cause an uproar amongst every Christian out there. I am not religious because my grandmother was such a Bible thumper and swore she was going to go to heaven but was literally one of the worst people I have ever known, she beat us abused my grandpa was a racist(my grandpa she married is part african) and would lose her temper and swear or hit people. It's ironic that in the early 2000s, the nation's greatest fear was the potential rise of Middle Eastern individuals who might gain power and impose Sharia law. Fast forward 20 years, and we now face the Christian version of that very fear. As someone who grew up in the church and attended a Christian school where the Bible was taught thoroughly, I can attest that not everyone is brainwashed into belief. For me, it had the opposite effect. Since I was 16, I've been an agnostic, it did however equip me to debate Bible passages with anyone who tries to use them to hate me for being trans or a non-believer. The Batman quote comes to mind: “You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” I sincerely hope that rational thought and ideas prevail before we repeat the mistakes of the past, leading to intervention. I fear for the future of this country and its people.

"How did so many people know about this..." well, let me explain: when you work for a big company, you don't spill its beans without the fear of being blacklisted by the entire industry. So, while "doing the right thing" is a nice thing to say, when NO ONE will come to your aid when you're locked out of every job available in your field, doing the right thing means disaster for your family. So, shockingly, people prioritized their entire world over being "the one" who got destroyed for being righteous.

19:32 we are currently seeing the same thing play out in Canada. That’s playing out in France. In Canada, conservatives one the Toronto area which is classically been liberal for over 20 years . And the fact the conservatives have beat the liberals in every election and they’re going to have a sweeping election where they have too much power This is the results of the liberal government overstepping its bounds and pushing its beliefs on everybody . The Trudeau government pushed against the people so much that their own supporters don’t support them anymore, and are literally vote in their political rivals The reason that this is dangerous, is there going to be such a huge shift in the politics and they’re going to have the majority where they can just make anything they want into law See I’m tired of the liberal government for the same reason, but I understand our system works best when we have representatives of both sides whereas the last while since Trudeau was voted in, we have not had that . He formed an alliance and basically did anything he wanted in politics. Now the other side is going to have the power to do the same and our country working together to improve itself. We do the same thing we did for the last eight years and just improve the lives of the one side while screwing out the other half of the country

I was raised Catholic and over the years I'm at the point I want to put all the religions into the same bin as Scientology as being cults. The purpose of religion was to make you a better person with grounds to live by. Now it's just used so people can do whatever they want and hide behind their religion.
