Biax Scrapers and Flaker Models

My opinion on Biax scrapers and flakers. The only difference between the BL10 and all of the other scrapers, BL 40, 7 ELM, 7 ESM is the stroke. The BL10 has a stroke of .4" and the other larger scrapers have a stroke of .8" which is double of the BL 10. As my body is older and arthritis is getting worse I prefer the lighter models.
As my good friend Phil has stated, the motor is the same as a Metabo ST EP 564 jigsaw, and will fit all of the green Biax scrapers. The armature bearings are Fafnir 38KDD on the fan end and 37KDD on the back.

Hello there, the green parts (motor), is from Metabo same used on their angle grinder, you can easily find some old one (like new) here in europe, just have to reverse rotation of the armature.

Yes, the grinder is a Metabo ST EP 564, but they are hard to find in the US.

So I saw a teardown of one of the very old 'blue body' flakers. And on that machine there was a cam ring that went around the shaft coming out of the gearbox. The cam profile was perpendicular to the shaft rotation, and the spindle shaft had a bearing that contacted that profile. So it appeared that when the spindle was pressed into the material, that force engaged the bearing to the cam which looked like it had ~1-3mm of thrust, and was likely clocked to the tilting motion of the spindle (that looked like it was driven by a simple scotch yoke.) That would provide a synchronized pushing motion I believe I see when those are used, but not having ever accessed one I'm just speculating. So I think the thrust vector can only really be seen and felt when the spindle is compressed, as they don't preload it with a spring. Given the cost of these things, I could totally understand not wanting to open one up, but I'd be super interested in seeing that mechanism better. The video I found didn't really show this critical section well and didn't even know the difference between a flaker and scraper. I feel like it is up to the community to keep these old and valuable machines alive as Biax themselves understandably have an interest in selling us replacements.

I agree about keeping the older ones going and rebuilding them. According to 2 different Dapra representatives, Dapra could care less about quality control or customer satisfaction which is pretty sad. They also raised their prices from May of this year to October which I have emails to document. I also have some parts diagrams I will try to scan and also maintenance booklets that I found yesterday. My friend Mike is currently rebuilding an old blue flaker. He has posted to your BL40 thread. Maybe he will chime in. I have no problem tearing down my 8 EM flaker which will be all new to me. Since a kid that seems to be what I do, just curious of how things work. Thanks for the feedback Jason.

Jason, I'm working on an old Blue 8E flaker that was a bit of a basket case. It is just how you described. So far I've replaced the 'yoke' pin, the pin that fits into that (one that comes out of the eccentric housing), and the roller bearing. My challenge right now is getting the worn oilite bearings that the main shaft rides replaced ... previous owner did a strange modification on them. Ed Dyjak has been super helpful in sourcing replacement parts and walking me through process. I'll add some pictures to the thread you posted on PM.

@@OtherBrotherDarylSmith Just as a late follow up, I recently obtained a HM2 flaker and the spindle is similar to the one I described above, with a bearing riding on a circular cam profile that applies a forward travel of about 2mm when the blade is pressed against a surface. You won't see that motion when the tool isn't engaged with the work as there is nothing forcing the spindle bearing against the cam. I posted pictures on the Practical Machinist website for anyone curious how they work.

Great video. I just bought used Biax 7 Elm scraper in pretty good condition. Watched your videos made it easy for me to take apart and put back together. The rear armature bearing sounded a little rough so I decided to replace both the front and back ones. Brushes looked like they still had quite a bit of life. Replaced the cord and plug with a new one. Cleaned all the internal components and put new grease. I will probably order a new shoe for the front as it had a bit of wear on the one side but not too bad. Now ready for scraping. In has been 20 plus years since the last time I scraped. Did a Toyoda OD/ID grinder when I was in my 30’s . Learned from a former Excello machine service guy. Still got to buy myself a camelback straight edge and granite square

You must be in the Detroit area? I worked for Kasper back in the 90s and we rebuilt a lot of Excello and New Brittain machines. If you are close you should come by. I have a lot of camelback straightedges I would part with. I have about 7 or 8 that I still need to scrape for friends as well.

@@brianwernham5236 I believe MAG (Machine Alliance Group) bought Excello, G&L, Lamb, and a few other companies and they are located near Port Huron. I am just over an hour from Port Huron. I have a couple of customers in Port Huron too.
