BHF - London to Brighton Bike Ride 2022 - Cycling up Ditchling Beacon - 4K video.

Video footage from my GoPro Hero 9 & hero 10 cameras during the climb up Ditchling Beacon on the ride from London to Brighton on June 19th 2022.
The elevation gain is circa 500 feet - depending on what you consider to be the actual starting point!
I am not the youngest of fittest cyclist on the ride, but my goal was to get to the top of all the hills - without stopping or walking.
As well as all the usual cycle training, I also specifically trained to climb up 1 mile long hills ahead of the ride.
My actual 'ride time' was 4 hrs and 5 minutes. I started at 07:00 - and reached Brighton about 12:15. (Therefore deduce that I had circa 40 minutes break + GoPro battery change time during the ride).
My climb was therefore circa 11:30 to 11:45
The actual climb time for me was circa 14.5 minutes. I cut the video length down to circa 10 minutes.

It is always a magic moment to get to the top, no matter how many times you ascend the climb. Well paced Chapeau

Nice work Mike! It's a tricky hill and half of it is a mental battle. Looks like you paced it really well

Top ascent there Mike! To ride up without walking, is a fine achievement. Lovely descent to the finish line after though! It actually averages 10% and hits 16% at some points. Nice to have done it for the BHF...

Thanks. Still working on the video for the descent - however it was spitting with rain at the time and everyone was being cautious at the time I rode it this year. So, may be of interest - but not too exciting! :)

Will be my 1st time doing the L2B ride this year. I live 2 miles from Ditchling Beacon and will not attempt it till the day. Bad enough driving up it.😂 Well done on making it to the top.

On this ride, about 12 years ago, I smashed my collar bone to pieces 15 miles in when I got side swiped by someone else. Went on to complete Ditchling and onto Brighton. Must have been the painkillers subscribed by the retired doctor who said there was nothing broken :-D

Good spot. Many of the riders are not experienced cyclists - they and their bikes are under-prepared. For the L2B I always have a climbing cassette with a great-granny gear (34 teeth) on the back. Spinning all the way up the Beacon!

Good work there! I did this two years ago on my Brompton and had to walk most of The Hill... I'm going again this year, and thinking my options are to get fitter/stronger, or fit a smaller chain ring. Or both. I suppose the smaller gear will sacrifice top speed, but then again how often on the ride will I be spinning out?

How many do you want? It is the last, the most evil, and the steepest. Not for nothing do St Johns Ambulance have an ambulance at the top.

Did this in 2016 - would never do it again - too many idiots on the descents - also people just stopping dead in front of you on the hills with no warning - just too dangerous

I'd like to take part but things that concern me are other cyclists that are not very road savvy. You can see the woman walking up the hill in pink at the start that just walks out in front of you to pass another cyclist without looking.

Yes, that stuff happens, but overall there is a great community spirit and people look after each other. I think that there’s more danger from the poorly maintained roads than someone walking out in front on a hill.
