Bhekani On: From Civil Engineer to Software Developer : Career Change , Passion over Comfort
This week I chat with Bhekani Khumalo on his career transition journey from civil engineering to self-taught software engineering and he tells us how he prepared for the transition and set himself up for success my setting himself apart and above his peers.
Here's the article that BK mentions: justreflections.bhekani.com/p...

The willingness to keep trying new things-different methods, uncomfortable tasks-when you are already an expert at something is what separates good from great. Focusing on your strengths is required for peak performance, but improving your weaknesses has the potential for the greatest gains. This is true for athletes, executives, and entire companies. Leaving your comfort zone involves risk, however, and when you are already doing well, the temptation to stick with the status quo can be overwhelming, leading to stagnation. - Garry Kasparov and Mig Greengard, Deep Thinking

Late to the comment section but I totally loved BK’s interview as much as others. Seems so much is just relatable in ‘Seasons’ and we looove it here. Thank you for the wonderful advice, tips and motivation , this career transition thing is one crazy thing that many people don’t quit warm upto really well unless it involves a very big cheque but when you have a supportive circle (partner esp, thank you Mrs K😘) its quite doable. I have a lot of take homes : 1. Don’t jump rope 2. Fake it till you make it😂 3. Be willing to learn and prove your competence 4. Grab opportunities (or create them😝) 5. Prepare yourselves (esp for Interviews) Thank you Mr and Mrs K for this great one❤️❤️❤️

Comment pinned because what a great summary! Thanks Doc!
I really loved this. Please may you ask your hubby a follow up question: has he ever dealt with insubordination at work from computer science graduates who didn’t want to be led by him coz he didn’t study what they studied (I’ve been through something like that)
Another installment with The Mr KHUMALO nice 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻 as usual.i’m early

Nice one guys! I learned a lot. Currently trying to pivot and in that space where I am scared that I may regret doing so. Bhekani's note on this was so helpful.
