Episode 48: Extremists And Moderates
With Mohan Gokhale as Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Sudhir Kulkarni as Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Tom Alter as Chairman, Achyut Potdar as Prof. Jinsivale, Madhav Achwal as Govind Ranacle, and John Holyer as Journalist. The script is by Govind P. Despande and the consultant is Prof. Y.D. Phadke.
Nehru opines that the early stages of the political movement were dominated by the ideological urges of upper middle classes. With the coming-of-age of the National Congress founded in 1885, anew type of leadership appeared, more aggressive and defiant, representing the much larger number of lower middle classes as well as youth. The powerful agitation against ‘Partition’ of Bengal had thrown up many able and aggressive leaders but the real symbol of the ‘radical’ new age was Bal Gangadhar Tilak from Maharashtra with his power base around Pune. ‘Moderates’, who favoured constitutional methods, became identified with Gopal Krishna Gokhale, whose power-base was among Mumbai intelligentsia.
The first signs of polarisation in the Congress ranks loom large in Maharashtra in late 1890‘s. In the prevailing debate on the ‘Age of Consent Bill’, Gokhale declines to go against the government. ‘Radicals’ like Tilak argue about the futility of revisionist petitions to the government. Revolutionary slogans are in the air, tempers run high and conflicts seem inevitable. To avoid confrontation, opinions of Dadabhai Naoroji, universally regarded as the father-figure of the country, are sought but to no avail.
Gokhale accepts the need for patience, and moves easily between the presidency of Congress and membership of the Viceroy’s Council. His contrived view is that the establishment of railways has hastened the policy of free trade. Tilak experiments with mass-focus appeals like the politicisation of festivals, patriotic crusades based on the legacy of Shivaji and exhortations to Civil disobedience, and printing seditious poetry in his newspaper ‘Kesari’. Reports of incidents of defiling idols and molesting women by the Tommies bring charges of sedition on Tilak. Gokhale is left in a quandary and hastens to pardon him in public.
Sentenced to prison, Tilak becomes a martyr for the Nationalist cause. As Nehru notes, the explosion that greeted the ‘Partition’ of Bengal in 1905 finds its echo in Tilak’s incendiary speeches, while in Gokhale’s camp, there is consolatory anticipation that the incoming Secretary of State is going to be sympathetic to the Nationalist cause. Gokhale continues to be the voice of moderation, yet the pamphlets and petitions flood everywhere, announcing extension of Swadeshi protest to the whole of India. It spreads in a remarkable display of united and effective action. Congress, however, disowns the movement. At the 1906 Congress in Nagpur, a split is avoided by extending an invitation to the octogenarian Dadabhai Naoroji to take the chair by Surendranath Banerjee, and some contrite resolutions favouring Swaraj (self-rule). In the 1907 Congress meet at Surat, the divisions between ‘radicals’ like Tilak and ‘moderates’ like Gokhale can no longer be contained.
As Nehru summarises, the 1907 clash in Congress resulted apparently in a victory for the ‘moderates’ through organisational control. There was, however, no doubt that the vast majority of political-minded people in India favoured Tilak and his ‘radical’ group.

My sister's and wife's best friends are also Hindus. My best friend was poor. I was from a upper middle-class family. I used to help him. I used to hate to think in terms of Hindu-Muslim. Now I'm a panislamist. I hate my country. Because its government and system hate me. I can't remain alive without retaliation. Still I don't hate Hindus personally. But I hate them politically. They support BJP and RSS. They want to expell us. Now I understand the situation of Quaid-e-Azam Mr Jinnah. My forefathers were wrong. They should have migrated along with Mr Jinnah. I'm trying to migrate.

The show is based on a book ! Just a book. Our history has been interpreted by so many historians and there are different views to look at everything. There is nationalist view, feminist view, Marxist view etc. Please be cautious that whatever this show showed is not the entire history it's what This Book by Jawaharlal Nehru says. Or an effort towards depicting the same on screen.

Just a book. Every history is JUST a book sometimes written in mystical ways. They can be epics ( Ramayan, Mahabharat ) or just simple poetry story telling ( Rani Laxmibai, Rani Padmavati etc). How else will history be conveyed. Maybe Jawaharlall Nehru wrote a book, but this series is more than the book and I will not be surprised if it has deviated from the book and based on actual documented history ( see the Casting titles and research credits ).

I would gladly like to quote the example of Henry vivian derozio from episode 41 of Ram mohun roy.... According to derozio.... Have guts to question everything which has been fed to you... Constantly or intermittently through tools of societal conditioning, pedagogical methodology...... This episode has put Tilak into bad light... He has been portrayed as a firey rudimentary Hindu.... But those who have read Tilak know that there are several nuances/layers associated with the ideology of particular person.... His ultimate aim was swaraj and freedom... By any means.... He knew very well without gathering masses it is impossible to attain substantial changes in status quo... Due to this very reason he used religion as a tool to gather masses... Through ganesh puja, through propogating about shivaji maharaj.... Know I have arrived at this truth by studying both sides of Tilak.... Whether he was right or wrong ,nobody can comment upon it as morality is bound to change with time.

Absolutely spot on.. History has countless versions.
When you see the epidemic plague control, it reminds us what happened to control Corona Pandemic in China and all over the world.. It was necessary for that administration at that time to control the epidemic. It was life and death situation. It was insensitive to the local culture, but doing it to saved lives. People were Ignorant. If you don't control epidemics by following local culture, still people will blame you. Another thing I noticed, is how Shivaji Maharaj is being manipulated by leaders. There are evidences Shivaji Maharaj wanted to kill Afzal Khan when he left Rajgad. He was all prepared to kill. He had made up his mind, wether Afzal Khan tries first or not. It is now always mentioned that Afzal tried to attack first to make Shivaji Maharaj ethical! People forget in war there is no Ethics! History is manipulated, the Truth is distorted. Indian history is not trustworthy to a real objective historians. This series is bit closer to the Truth but still shows how ignorant and biased people are and how wrong the history is or was.
Tilak was the first leader of the Indian Independence Movement.

@@lookdownlookdown8434 Hahahahaha, AMU founder Sir Syed Ahmad Khan openly said that mzlms should not protest against British rule, either they should demand a separate nation or should live under British rule bcoz the british are atleast "The people of the book". Go and read history, mzlms didn't join the national movement until british removed the caliph of turkey after defeating them in 1st WW.

जो मांगे तिलक ने 1894 ने रखी थी उस मांग को कांग्रेस ने 1930 में रखा। जैसे स्वराज की मांग और अंग्रेजों से असहयोग। इससे सिद्ध होता है कि कांग्रेस की सोच कितनी धीमी थी और तिलक कितने आगे सोचते थे।
