Nehru observes that in South India, after a lapse of 1000 years after the Mauryan empire collapsed, there were great states like the Chalukya Empire in the west followed by the Rashtrakutas. Further south were the Pallavas who were mainly responsible for the colonising expeditions from India in the eastern seas. Later came the Chola Empire that spread right across the peninsula and conquered Sri Lanka and Southern Burma. King Mahendra Varman of the Pallava dynasty adopted the Vedic religion and promoted religious consciousness by building temples and settling Brahmins with gifts of land. Trade and commerce flourished with more than 500 businessmen allowed to form a guild. Of the Chola dynasty Raja Raja Chola was contemporaneous with the Turk invasions in the north but was buffered by the Rashtrakutas. The Chola dynasty continued their sway over the eastern seas and their ships carried merchandise to distant countries.
The story of building the mighty Brihadisvara temple is presented, albeit based on scant historical information. Raja Raja Chola has ruled in Tamil Nadu for sixteen years, yet the mystery of the murder of his uncle and predecessor, Uttam Chola, has not been solved. Blame is laid on his cousin Sundara Chola, who has taken refuge in the neighbourhood kingdom of Chera. The king, after his death, confiscates his family property within the Tamil territory. Throughout all this, ‘Rajmata’, the arch aunt-queen, strongly suspects Raja Raja to be guilty of uncle’s murder and usurping the throne. To get rid of this suspicion the king offers to build a temple to commemorate Uttam Chola at a site of Rajmata’s choice.
An unexpected gift arrives from the far-away king of the Shailendra dynasty of Kamboj (Cambodia), with a model of a temple that commemorates the king himself. The idea germinates in Raja Raja’s mind: why not build a temple, unparalleled in history, which would carry his own name? A secret plan is hatched away from the knowledge of ‘Rajmata’ to employ the best of architects and sculptors and even to bring in the finest of singers and dancers for performing in the temple. He would also build a flourishing city of Tanjavur all around the temple. The project is pressed on, regardless of all opposition, including an incipient rebellion.

His book was written much before the archeological survey of India , many of his writings are flawed.
I am from Sialkot Pakistan, Watching this serial after nearly 30 years as I had kneely followed it on Doordarshan then. It was an epic serial at that time and was popular among people across both sides of the border alike.

Raja Raja Cholan was the given after he conquered Cheras, Pandiyas and Chalukyas. His real name was *Arun Mozhli Varman* and is Son' name was Madhurathagan(Rajendra Chola)

What's amazing is that today in Indian History we don't recall these great empires before 14th century .. today's Indian only remember Mughal invaded ..English invaded.. but thus story from prior to their invasion tells the story of why we got invaded.. our country and region was so rich that ..everyone around wanted to loot us ..which they eventually did.. main reason our own lack of unity ..we knew only war and rage.. in modern world ..we need new strategy to bring our glory back which existed for over 5000 years prior to invasions..

The Nanadesi guild: were a group of various merchants.The Nanadesi guild and the Manigramam guild later joined the Ayyavole-500 guild. Manigramam guild: flourished in Tamil Nadu in the Pallava and Chola periods and was active in South-east Asia

By removing the eternal truth of- "सत्यमेव जयते " from Doordarshan emblem ,by giving it a religious colour under fradulent garb of secularism, a unpadonable crime has been done. The emblem gives a deserted look and gives pain.

It's definitely incorrect. Finally someone able to point out an natural use of urdu in both the narrations and dialogues of this series. During this era there was no trace of urdu. Take things with a pinch of salt here. Look for other resources also for bonafied and authorized knowledge.

इतनी भी क्या कट्टरता है भाई, एकाध शब्द उर्दू का आ भी जाए तो क्या फर्क पड़ता है,पंजाब के पौरव भरतवंश की शाखा चोल शासक वैदिक धर्मी थे पौरववंशी समुद्रगुप्त धारण वैदिक धर्मी थे हांलाकि महाविनाशकारी नास्तिक संप्रदाय और उसकी मूर्तिपूजा की कापी विनाशकारी पौराणिक संप्रदाय भी प्रचलित थे. सुपरस्टार कृष्णा घट्टामनैनी जी ( घट्टामनैनी = चोल) की सिंहासनम् फिल्म सर्च करके देखो उन्होंने फिल्म में खुद को वेद धर्मी ही कहा है . महाभारत ट्राइब चोल = चोल चोयल चाहर चाहल जाट जट्ट गोत्र . उत्तर चोल शाखा तुर्वसु तोमर वंश के साथ पहले पश्चिम तुर्केस्तान में थी ये रामायण काल से कुछ पूर्व समम की बात है ( भारतीय परंपरा के अनुसार करीब पौने दो करोड़ वर्ष पहले और पाश्चात्य परंपरा अनुसार 7-8 हजार वर्ष पहले ) फिर चोल पांडय केरल और साथ में सिंहलों का एक दल दक्षिण भारत में स्थापित हुआ. उत्तर चोल शाखा का फारस के सम्राट यजगिर्द से संघर्ष हुआ, कुछ समय बाद उत्तर चोल चोलिस्तान पंजाब में आ गए.
