Lone Survivor is a gripping war film released in 2013, directed by Peter Berg and based on a true story. The movie recounts the harrowing experiences of a four-man Navy SEAL team during a covert mission in Afghanistan.
Set in 2005, the film follows the mission of Operation Red Wings, whose objective is to locate and eliminate a high-ranking Taliban leader named Ahmad Shah. The team, consisting of Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy (played by Taylor Kitsch), Petty Officer Second Class Marcus Luttrell (played by Mark Wahlberg), Petty Officer Second Class Danny Dietz (played by Emile Hirsch), and Petty Officer Second Class Matthew Axelson (played by Ben Foster), is deployed to a remote area of the Hindu Kush mountains.
After successfully infiltrating the region, the SEALs soon find themselves compromised when they stumble upon a group of goat herders, including an elderly man and two young boys. The team is faced with a moral dilemma: either kill the unarmed civilians to maintain their secrecy or release them and risk their mission being compromised.
Choosing not to kill the herders, the SEALs retreat to higher ground but soon find themselves ambushed by a large Taliban force. The ensuing firefight is intense, with the outnumbered SEALs desperately fighting for their lives. They attempt to contact their base for support but are unable to establish communication due to the rough mountainous terrain.
As the battle continues, the team members suffer severe injuries, and their ammunition supplies dwindle. Eventually, the team is separated, and Luttrell becomes the titular "Lone Survivor" as he fights his way through enemy forces, enduring immense physical pain and exhaustion.
Meanwhile, back in the United States, the military mobilizes a rescue mission to save the SEALs. Despite encountering heavy resistance, a daring helicopter rescue operation is launched, resulting in the loss of another helicopter and several more lives.
In the end, Luttrell is discovered by friendly Afghan villagers who protect him from the Taliban and ultimately facilitate his rescue. The film concludes with a tribute to the fallen SEAL team members, highlighting their bravery and sacrifice.
