I think that "We Own This City" has been Simon's best work since the Wire to date.

Simon is excellent; his shows among the best. "Treme" and "We Own This City" also successfully pull back the curtain... "Treme" is often a joy 💜

I still think Homicide: Life on the Streets was a better cop show than anything Dick Wolf put out. I wish more people could see that streaming.

David Simon might seem nihilistic but for his investment in "empathy" because beyond being a "Democrat" he's a liberal. At this stage of capitalism, the conventional thinking and political commitment of liberals is to neoliberalism, a deeply conservative ideology by definition. It's the root of the issues we have, in which Simon loves to focus....but if you're stuck in an ideological feedback loop that only allows you to shake your fist at capitalism but not to think outside it....well, nihilism starts to leak. Simon and his ilk don't respect the history of or the power of popular movements, so they don't exist in his storytelling. "The people" aren't moved to collective action because his allegiance is to a status quo he wants to see "tweaked". There are plenty of storylines, tensions and contradictions and toxic elements to sort thru in pursuit of popular left movement building. But none of that is part of David Simon's perspective....
