Beyond the Stage: The Making of Santana & Buddy Miles Live! 1972 - Documentary

Музыка

An underrated album that holds many secrets you wouldn't believe. Buddy Miles joined a special lineup of the Santana Band for a serious jam on January 1st, 1972. This concert remains an obscure title within Carlos' discography, technically his first solo record at the time, it's an electrifying mix of latin descargas, tight funk grooves and striking lead guitar work. In between Santana 3 and Caravanserai, this is a forgotten but vital document of a shape shifting band just before entering the doors of jazz rock and fusion. #carlossantana #santana #caravanserai #abraxas #documentary #classicrock #guitar

Great history! I was at the Sunshine Festival on January 1, 1972 (a Saturday). I and the friend I went with were 12 years old. Her mother had dropped us off at around 9:00 AM and was to return later in the afternoon. I remember people telling us to hurry and go up to the stage at the far end of the crater because Carlos Santana would be playing soon. (There was no mention of Buddy Miles.) That was around 1:00 PM. My friend and I made it to the front of the crowd and watched the local band that was playing. And then there was a pause. I remember "Yesterday" being played over the PA. Apparently, Carlos was late. We continued to wait. I was standing next to a guy with a million cameras strapped around his chest - I thought he was a photographer for a local newspaper but he probably was the photographer who took the shots that were included in the album. Finally, my friend and I had to leave because her mother was coming. I remember hearing the band start to play right as we were leaving the crater, walking through the tunnel that connects it to the main road (shown in one of the images you included in the video). It may have been around 5:00 PM. I was really sad to have missed that concert but I remember the day clearly. Keep up the great work!

I've had this album since around 1978, listened to it hundreds of times......I was deeply into Band of Gypsys at the time, and one of the 1st things I noticed is, in Free Form Funkafied at around 15.00, Carlos plays a guitar break that is his rendition of the break Jimi plays in Message of Love at around 1.30.....it's pretty much identical.....amazing....

JCM- I was in a band in the late 90's. We had a gig at the Berkeley Square in Berkeley with a local reggae group. We walked in while they were playing and I was immediately impressed at how great their percussionist was, with an assortment of drums and percussion. Well, it turned out be- none other then the great Mingo Lewis! I was floored. Backstage he was the life of the party, pacing around and joking. Well I was in for a surprise. We played with them again at a Reggae Festival in the Sierra foothills. I played bass with this group though I am primarily a melodic style guitarist 🎸. I went into a solo at one point, and who do I see and hear appear right next to me but Mingo! Apparently he dug my playing and couldn't resist joining in. It remains a highlight of my musical life. Another gig in Cotati CA saw Mingo, unannounced repeating his surprise jam session. I've never had a greater conformation of my guitar playing then this. Beautiful. Thanks Mingo for the musical brotherhood. Years later I went to Return to Forever in S.F. and Mingo was there looking for a ticket! Inside he disappeared later in their set and- appeared on stage with them! As you mentioned on the Caravanseri video Mingo had some wonderful years recording and performing with Al Di Meola, and even briefly with RTF. So he knew them and I don't know if it was planned or not, it seemed spontaneous, but they didn't miss a beat and enjoyed themselves. I thought you would enjoy this bit of music history my fellow devotee (!) Peace ✌️ ☮️ 🕊 love ❤️ 💖 and 🌎 music 🎶 🎵 🕉 🌟 🌈 🌩 ⚡️ Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Santana and so many others that have enriched our lives beyond measure.

Despite that it was re-recorded in the studio with "canned" audience applause, it's still a fantastic listen, especially on vinyl w really good speakers cracked. Coke Escovedo is the father to Sheila Escovedo aka Sheila E . Buddy Miles had a fairly decent solo career throughout the '70's however, Them Changes was his only big hit...his band was poppin' Live in person btw.

SO GOOD! Thanks for doing this, as well as the equally excellent 'Making of Santana III'. Those were the first ever albums I owned, I received 'III' on cassette as a birthday present not so many years after its release...in 1974 or so. Also 'Santana/Miles' a bit later and on vinyl. This was thanks to a cousin of mine who was a few years older than me and was responsible for getting me into the guitar and rock music. I always was fascinated by the Live album because it somehow never is discussed or listed in any Santana discussion. And even as a little boy, I heard something weird in the applause and it became clear later that is was looped and dubbed. Anyway, I agree that it's a killer album that should be better known. I will search it out on vinyl again. I think it was re-released on the audiophile 'Speakers Corner' label.

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Thanks! At the same time I also discovered Mahavishnu Orchestra's 'Birds Of Fire' and Miles Davis' 'In a silent way' - realizing that a guitar player named John Mc Laughlin performed on both albums. I was really lucky to hear those albums at a very young age. Hearing Santana 'III' on cassette, there were no musicians credited. I didn't even know that Neal Schon was on second guitar till much later. I also distinctly remembered that my cousin had a 'Welcome' tour poster hanging in in room, he'd been to the show from that tour in Zürich/Switzerland.

I found this cd without a cover someplace years ago, don’t remember where? I had never even heard of it, so was really excited to listen to it, being a fan of both of them already. I didn’t realize Schon was on it also having no liner notes, but I can hear it now. I really enjoy the album. A couple interesting personal notes, I live in a town in the San Francisco Bay Area, and saw Miles playing a theater downtown maybe 5 years before he passed away, it was an amazing show, he played drums, guitar and sang his heart out! ❤️ I’m a guitarist also, and I started talking to his guitarist between sets and after the show he invited me backstage where I briefly met Buddy while he was eating some ribs, he was very nice 😊 Another fun fact, I co host a blues jam in the same town currently and Mingo Lewis Jr. comes occasionally and jams on drums with us 🥁

Senor JCM, your presentations never cease to entertain and inform. You strongly hinted at a 'Caravanserai' video forthcoming and I was anticipating that. Then I see the notification for "Santana/Miles Live' instead. Excellent curve ball, I didn't see it coming. Yes, apart from the cheesy crowd noises, this is a great album, although I have yet to give Free Form Funkafide a listen after all these years. To my ear, it sounds like young Neal burning down the house on 'Marbles'. I had a Peruvian coworker who held tickets to attend that Santana show in Peru. He said that someone from the Santana camp had urinated in public at the airport and that was the incident that ignited the already existing anti-Santana sentiment within the Peruvian government and military. I've heard Johnny Mac say on another KZread interview that his last name is like 'McLofflin". Correction: I just listened to 'Marbles/Lava'...I think Carlos takes the solo in Marbles and Neal solos in Lava.

Jose, with your almost encyclopedic knowledge (and an excellent mentor in your Uncle) there is one name that I may have missed, but have not heard you mention, Airto Moreira. I hear him in almost every one of Santana's songs. He seems to be stuck in my mind when I listen to Santana, but I hear so much of him in Santana's music. Just thought I would mention him to see if you had a similar felling on the matter. I am loving the direction that your going in! Everything you talk about I have some interest in and it never gets old and boring! I think I've heard all the Zeppelin stories a hundred times over the years, but your angle on things is giving it a fresh perspective that piques my interest with every new video! Very impressive! It’s definitely a special album that needs some attention. It’s not one that I put on often. When going back to Santana’s early catalog and buying his albums on vinyl, it did deliver a bigger appreciation and enjoyment of the music. I think with you starting the focus off with the powerhouse of musicians, it made me look at the album differently. I actually stopped the video and put on the album. OK, it’s not a entirely a true live album, but it’s got the vibe and the musicianship of those cats really draws you in. I think with you making this video, it will not only make me occasionally put on this album, but it will make others put this album on more as well. That’s a very positive thing! By the way, the picture of your uncle is very cool! It’s great that he drew your attention to this album.

His screaming open wah-wah pedal is unmistakable (!) 🎉 So, many people see "Carlos Santana/ Buddy Miles" record while listening to probably 3/4 being Neal Schon on guitar. (!) Hearing again in this vid, that; they were deported back to the US (from Lima) and their gear lost forever reminds me of another event by a band that I wouldn’t mind you covering Jose: Queen. Jim Beach their manager says in the Magic Years video: “…it’s a LITTLE hairy when some power introduces himself by saying he’s killed 206 people…” Queen were very successful in S. America but the same event applied to them in that their gear almost got confiscated too. They were one step ahead and loaded duplicate road cases with astroturfing and left it behind…thinking it was their precious gear. Smart move!

Greg Errico shared to a mutual friend that his drums were not re-recorded, thus one can assume that side A was overdubbed. Side B is long jam, it had no connection to the unreleased material from the bootleg material. Coke Escovedo, Victor Pantoja, and Luis Gasca were part of the studio line up on Malo’s debut album. Escovedo, Pantoja, and Schon appeared on Azteca’s two albums, Escovedo was the leader. Hadley Caliman sat in on Caravanserai and later joined Malo. He was a Luis Gasca cohort. Gasca’s second solo album was recorded after the Santana’s III was finished, using Santana’s studio time. Santana’s manager is credited as executive producer for Luis Gasca’s solo album and Santana Buddy Miles Live album. Most likely Michael Carabello played on side B of the “Live” in the studio album. Mingo Lewis was not in this project.

This album was easily available on vinyl and CD in the UK in the late 80s when I started listening to Santana. I never liked it myself and it took some time to realise that it was due to the really loud and obviously overdubbed crowd noise. That whistle that has delay on it and crops up time and time again, obscuring the music, is extremely irritating. I will revisit it at some point to see if my opinion has changed, but I can't say that that is at the top of my to do list.

On New Year’s Day of 1972, Carlos Santana & Buddy Miles gave a concert at the Diamond Head Crater in Oahu Hawaii and later that year Columbia released a live album. But in yet another classic late ’60s/early ’70s live album deception, this album is recorded entirely in the studio. This time the argument is heavily one-sided with lots of proof including a rare bootleg, as well as testimonies. First off, the other guitar player Neil Schon has stated in an interview that it’s recorded in the studio because several of the musicians were tripping on LSD and the recordings were not acceptable to Columbia, so Santana and Miles were forced to replicate the show in the studio with fake or canned applause. Several crew members have backed up the story with one saying that because of the heat there were several power outages to the recording truck during the show and the other saying that FM radios used for security kept bleeding into the soundtrack, creating an editing nightmare. Lastly, if you listen to the bootleg, it’s quite clear especially on “Marbles” that it’s nowhere near the same performance, and some songs on the Columbia album aren’t even on the bootleg, basically making this “case closed.”

These tracks were all recorded in the studio and I find it reprehensible that Carlos has never admitted the truth about this "Live" sham!! Carlos had a golden opportunity to clear the air about this abomination of a recording and crowd overdubbing disaster in his most recent biography but he continues to lie about it being a "live" album! That awful recording on KZread is the actual recording! Buddy Miles wouldn't keep his mouth shut and kept scatting his way through practically the whole stinkin' album! He did the same to A Band Of Gypsys! Carlos was out of his mind recording with Buddy Miles! I love Buddy's Drumming but he had a gigantic ego and couldn't just keep his mouth shut and play Drums! I despise those fucking crowd noises! I can't believe Carlos was idiotic enough to release this pile of crap!

@@BIZARBIES If you don't mind me jumping in. I'll never understand why Carlos couldn't just play the whole Caravanserai album and then play a few encores of old material. When the new Santana went on their 1972 American tour they first played a gig at the Keystone in Berkeley , California on September 12,1972, pre haircut Carlos, and they played "Eternal Caravan Of Reincarnation" and "Waves Within" and "La Fuente Del Ritmo". This performance is on KZread. They dropped all three tracks from the set! Unbelievable! They incorporated all these other instrumentals that had nothing to do with Caravanserai! They also played those old Santana hits. By the time 1973 and Lotus, Carlos' Guitar playing had become redundant.

For starters, it's pronounced "Mac-Lauf-lin". I had a long comment on your Santana 3 documentary a couple of weeks ago. This is another great album by Carlos and company. Your statement about it not actually being the live recording kinda throws me a curve ball. I've always been annoyed by the audience's whistling and strange noises, but just assumed that was because it was recorded in a crater. I've read two books about Carlos, and never was it mentioned that this album was fabricated with overdubs. Yes, by the time of this recording, Santana was a pretty fractured band, and he, Neal Schon and some other members got together with Buddy Miles for this concert. Judging by the way the overall recording sounds, I don't see how you could actually overdub any instruments without changing the dynamics and overall "live" sound of the show. This is another album that I got as soon as it came out in '72. Side one is very good indeed, and the guitar work of Carlos and Neal is exceptional. Every track is powered by the infectious, powerful drumming of Buddy. The re-working of "Evil Ways" and "Them Changes" transforms them into straight ahead intense rockers! Couple that with "Lava", "Marbles", and "Faith Interlude", and you got yourself a damned fine "live" album. "Free Form Funkafide Filth" is really just an extended jam...it's O.K., but it doesn't really do much for me.

Tim like you i was shocked to read about the "live in the studio" theory. So i checked the bootleg, i was going to upload my analysis with that reference but got blocked out of copyright so.....i can tell you, for some tracks they seem to have recreated these in the studio at a faster tempo such as Marbles. Others like Faith Interlude sound like the actual show recording with OVERDUBS of trumpets, percussion here and there, etc. I am glad to know you appreciate this as much as i do. Free From is wild. Evil Ways sounds killer right? I spotted guitar solo re-recordings on SOME parts while using what seems to be the rhythm tracks from the show. So there you have it, it's a live album as a concept with studio add-ons. I also noticed the percussion overdubs like cowbell, timbales and the sax stuff, sounds brighter in the studio. Thank you very much for watching!

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-StoriesWent back and listened to it again last night, and really cranked-up the volume to get the maximum effect. Since I have no proof that some of this was over-dubbed in a studio, I'll have to take your word for it...but in my mind, it's a straight ahead live recording. How interesting that "Evil Ways" has both a saxophone and trumpet solo on it? It was a strange time for the Santana band as Carlos wanted Carabello out, but the other members revolted against Carlos and he split the band for awhile. I also find it interesting that Neal played with Carlos on this album, seeing as how he went with the remaining members of the band on a tour without him. I see that you're going to review "Caravanserai" next, excellent, I'll be watching, but I'll state in advance that this album had a very strong musical effect on me, in fact it opened the door to my interest in jazz and progressive rock. Carry On, Good job on the Santana stuff!

@@timwhite5647 Truth be told, so many 'classic' live albums are heavily overdubbed. The Stones 'Get yer Ya-Ya's Out' for example or The Who's 'Live At Leeds'. Though there are conflicting stories on it, Tony Visconti went on record saying Thin Lizzy's 'Live and Dangerous' was completely overdubbed/re-recorded in the studio except for maybe the drums. The funniest story is Stan Getz' 'Getz a Go-go' live album feat. Astrud Gilberto who was riding high on the success of 'Girl from Ipanema' at the time. Some people say that Gilberto wasn't even preset at the live date! And when listening to that album, it sounds that the vocals were probably overdubbed, if they were even there in the first place...

You haven't changed my opinion that it's a severely unsatisfactory album. The editing and mixing would be problematic even if the fake crowd noise wasn't there. And the lead singer...even with some of his vocal excesses buried in the mix, Miles sounds like a parody of himself, or sounds like he's high on cocaine and not paying attention to the band (...well, it's either that or like he's having premonitions of Merci-era Magma). Guitars? Neil and Carlos were both into fuzzy timbres at the time, but it's obvious that Neil has the upper hand (plenty of recognisable phrases) - though obviously whenever you hear a "volcanic" run up the scale you know it's Carlos. No mention of the fact FFFF incorporates the lyrics of Leon Thomas's Um Um Um, which Leon sang onstage with the Santana band in 1973.

Santana used to perform "Marbles", which is in the album, live onstage in 1971! It was recorded in the studio for this crap of an album! Santana should have recorded "Marbles" for the Santana III album and dropped "Guajira"!
