Beyond Ghibli - A look at Japan's best anime directors

Studio Ghibli has a bit of a monopoly when it comes to anime in the west. This video series, Beyond Ghibli, takes a look at the best of the business outside of their bubble.
In this video I take a look at the best directors in Japan, both living and dead, and my favourite films from their portfolios.

Satoshi Kon's death was truly a tragedy for the world of cinema and animation. To think how much he revolutionized and inspired the craft, in the relatively little time he had.... one cannot avoid wondering how much more he could have contributed to cinema, and what masterpieces he could have given us.

I read a koe no katachi (silent voice) manga and cried and smile along the way, was so hyped up abt the animation but was truly disappointed :( it doesn’t represent the anime too well. Don’t get me wrong, for those that haven’t read the manga its awesome but the manga its just wholesome. Though it is to be expected since adaptation of a manga is hard to execute.

@@Man_Myth_Barbalazos Absolutely. I think he is special because, not only he was brilliant regarding the visual side and he had a genius way of directing and editing (I recommend the video of the channel "every frame a painting" about him, very well done), but also beacuse his works present unique, very profound and solid philosophical and psychological insights. And above that, the form of his works match perfectly with their substance. In this way, I think you could easily confront him, without any shame, with some of the most important filmmakers of all time, such as Kubrick, Fellini, Lynch, Bergman or others.

One person I was sad to see not make this list: Naoko Yamada! Of course, she’s relatively new, but her work is incredible. The depth of humanity that went into A Silent Voice is part of what makes it such a wonderful movie. In addition, female anime directors are few and far between, and with the recent KyoAni tragedy the studio could use the support. That’s not to say that her work’s appeal lies in these things alone. It’s beauty speaks for itself.

This is a good list. I am split on Makoto Shinkai, though. On one hand, he has this beautiful poetic use of elements like rain and often incorporates them into some hidden symbolism, like in Voices of a Distant Star. It's a bit like Tarkovsky. On the other, the characters and the narrative tends to tunnel vision on a single relationship in an obsessive and unhealthy way, like in Voices of a Distant Star or She and her cat. I find that maddening.

Garden of Words came at just the right point in my life, where instead of identifying with the male character like I ordinarily might, I identified with the female character. That stairwell scene at the end made me cry.

I'd personally like to add Naoko Yamada to this list. She got her directorial debut with K-ON! in 2009, and her style developed over time, culminating in the followup movie to Tamako Market, called Tamako Love Story in 2014. In 2016, she then went on to direct Koe no Katachi, or A Silent Voice in the west.

I actually closed the window I was watching this in (after seeing it all the way through, pausing several times in the middle to think about what you had said about each director) only to immediately re-open it so I could say something that I think needs to be said with emphasis: beautifully done and eloquently said!

wolf children is really lovely and has a wonderful ost, though thick with emotion. the girl who leapt through time is touching and easy to comprehend my favourite anime film is in this corner of the world. it's not show-offy and pretty slow and long but does a great job of building the story and its main character

Just dropped here to thank you for producing such a smooth, ease inducing video, I had been holding on watching Tokyo Godfathers as a start of Satoshi Kon's works (although I watched Paranoia Agent before jejs) due to your recommendation, and now that I finally have, I'm glad it was displayed in such a comforting way. I enjoyed the film in every minute and I will soon procede to continue my Satoshi Kon journey with Millennial Actress. Thank you for making this video, this was not the first time I watched it nor it will be the last.

Shinkai is a good director who could be great. Even understanding the Japanese love for melancholy. The bittersweet nature of his works are often unfocused best represented by 5 cm a second. And his best work, I believe, is garden of words which is a 45 min masterpiece of story telling and animation.
